    *Frequently Asked Questions*
    *Vegan Sugar? Isn't all sugar made from plants, therefore Vegan?* - No, sometimes sugar is refined using bone charcoal made from animal bones (this is less common nowadays, but that's the common distinction between 'sugar' and 'vegan sugar')
    *Wouldn't yeast extract make it non-vegan?* - No. Yeast is not an animal.

      Plants are organisms. Whoever argued that vegans don't eat 'organisms' should have paid a tiny bit more attention in biology class.

      @@AtomicShrimp I agree. I heard this about 22 years ago from a man who claimed he was vegan, didn’t wear leather or suede, didn’t eat eggs or milk or meat or fish, and made this additional claim when I asked if he drank alcohol.
      I would wonder if it was for attention, but he was probably mid-50s then and this was a long enough ago that there didn’t seem any value in that, so who knows.

    Interesting. While jerky wouldnt be amiss as a beer snack in Canada, it just... isn't all that popular for that application. It does decently well as a trail snack, but the only reason it sells in Canada is truckers, of which we have an abundance (an incredibly high number per captia). It isn't even stocked at all stores and youre only guaranteed to find it at gas stations and corner stores. Big box stores usually have it but I don't bat an eye when they don't.
    Probably because Canada is one of the countries with the biggest sweet snack profile, and how popular chips (crisps) are here moreso than any other snack. Almost every gathering ive been to everyone just brings chips, alcohol and weed. Regardless of setting or context.

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 Před 2 lety

      I haven't looked at this particular one....but usually, soy based stuff has a decent amount of protein. Probably very little carbs, unless they added a lot of sugar (same as with beef jerky). And likely not a lot of fat, because it wouldn't fit the aimed at flavor/consistency profile. Although there might be more, then in Beef jerky. That has to be very lean, because the fat would go rancid fairly quickly in an unrefrigerated product. You have more options there, if you're willing to use 'not so healthy' versions of plant fats.
      Honestly...I'd probably rather buy regular protein bars instead. Or just a tub of protein powder. Unless, you really, really want that savoury flavor and are willing to pay 3 times as much for the same amount of protein.

    This is entirely a non-sequitor as far as the video content do, but in general I have a policy of disabling my ad-blocker for youtubers whose content I enjoy and follow, and the experience I just had watching this video made me reverse that policy.
    At the beginning of this video I had a 2 minute long completely irrelevant ad which was unskippable, followed by a pitch for CZcams premium, which if you didn't take, you got another unskippable advertisement of similar length. I also had two mid-roll advertisements which were skippable, and another long and unskippable ad after the end titles card after another premium pitch. Although some of it was skippable, if you had watched all of the advertisements, they would have comprised a longer running time than the entire video they were placed on.
    I don't think that this is anything Atomic Shrimp is doing himself before anyone thinks otherwise, but given I tried to play nice and it only lead to youtube abusing that kindness, I felt it important to say something so you have some feedback as to why others are using adblockers on these videos, if I'm not the only one they're doing this.. I hope youtube realizes that this is a complete turn-off and I probably will simply not disable my adblocker from hereonout.

    • @maiyannah
      @maiyannah Před 2 lety +1

      @@AtomicShrimp I feel inclined to reiterate that the reason I mentioned this wasn't because I think you were somehow responsible for it or to complain about some action you had taken, but rather to explain my experience as the reason for why I am not going to disable my ad-blocker in the future. (And if I'm not the only one they're doing this to, likely the reason for others who aren't going to have the moral compunction to say something, I felt that not doing so would not be very ethical, but perhaps thats simply a piece of moralism on my part.)
      I did try to do so for channels whose content I value, of which yours is one, because I realize that this is how you and other youtube videomakers make their money, or one of the way anyways. But when CZcams is so intrusive with it's advertising, I feel they're kind of forcing me to reconsider that policy.

      Savoury encompasses a range of flavours that are not sweet. Beef is savoury. Cheese is savoury. Peanuts are savoury. Cabbage is savoury.

    Makes me wonder if the beef the most costly part of the jerky why is this vegan substitute costs min 50p more (70g pack) when the ingredients are much more cheaply available? Isn't the whole idea to redirect people to a vegan product which is "just as good"? The logical move should be to aim for a significantly lower price to make such a shift in meat consumption. Could you perhaps make a video of trying to make vegan jerky using your own idea (incl. marmite) and the food dehydrator? Listing the ingredient prices and power used - so the full cost. It would be very interesting for sure.

      If its made by essentially dehydrating tofu its probably quite expensive to make. I made a chicken substitute out of home made tofu by pressing it and freezing it to release the water. When compared to the pile of beans I started with the end product was tiny. Making Tofu is a real eye opener when it comes to the vast amount of waste it generates. The only reason why its affordable is because the huge pile of bean waste is usually used for animal feed. So vegans are buying a product that is only really viable due to its byproducts being used in the meat industry. There are all sorts of recipes to allow you to pretend you're going to find a use for the Okara that tofu making generates, but frankly that vast amount you have to shovel into your face for your little block of tofu is unbelievable. I just cannot bring myself to either eat all the Okara or toss vast amounts of waste into the garbage. Tofu is an extraordinarily profligate product and it should come as no surprise that any product made from it is expensive.
