    This hits a real nerve, we just tried to check in at our Airbnb and we were delayed 1 hour, so we went to La Comer and I was not too thrilled to leave our luggage in the car. We were okay, but man, this is a real possibility. Thanks for the heads up. Great warning!!

    An interesting technique. The same is true for riding on buses in Mexico where you typically put your hand luggage above your head on the open shelf. You have to be conscious that when people get off they could take your bag in a few seconds so it's a good idea to take a look at that bag when people are moving past you to get off the bus.

    Excellent video, I commonly follow the exact pattern you're describing in this video. Although we travel to Jalisco most often, the same could happen. Moving forward, one of us is remaining in the car while shopping prior to checking in at our Airbnb. Your approach to suggesting subtle changes to patterns or processes is priceless! I cannot thank you enough! Good Karma

    No stopping at any store till you have deposited all your belongings in your lodging place. Just today a friend was telling me of several stories about exiting/entering the airport in a rental car and getting pulled over by police. They were threatened by the police that they would keep their drivers license unless they paid to get it back. All paid hundreds of dollars. One cop pulled his gun out and pointed it at the driver and said I want all your money and everything in your purse. That driver was older and complied as all the others did too. I tried to explain the different kinds of cops in Mexico, some cant even write tickets, and just to continue to say "I will take the ticket" but my friend said she would be too afraid to say that. And...that is why the cops can get away with it. It is interesting that these events occurred entering or exiting the Cancun airport. There is obviously a problem at that airport.

    Another issue with rental cars is that the major rental companies often do not register the cars in the state where they are located. As an example in Monterrey where I often rent from Avis nearly all of the cars have license plates from Puebla. Not necessarily an issue for theft but it can draw attention at military checkpoints

    • @hivolco151
      @hivolco151 Před rokem

      This totally sets the renter up as a target for several reasons that I would rather not mention... but suffice to say: Most crimes happen from " Out of state" so I was taught by locals to ALWAYS be very aware of plates not from the area as they are more likely to be involved in crime. Turns out this info saved me !!

    Thanks Paul fir the heads up. One thing I have always done when I rent a convertible (say in Hawaii). I will disable the remote trunk latch. People will put their purses and wallets in the trunk. All the thief has to do is reach in and pull the trunk lever. It only takes one minute to unclip the cable from the trunk latch on the trunk lid. Then you just have to use the keys to open. I also have an Apple air tag hidden in our car we keep in Mexico, and have started putting one in each checked suitcase.

    Every time I've rented a car in Querétaro there's been some sort of problem. Ok first time due to my bad Spanish had a car reserved but high pressure sales pitch from hertz and I never found the place where the car was reserved for less money.
    The one that irritates me the most I returned the car without a front plate(I highly doubt the police took it) well apparently this was welly addressed in the rental contract and stated that because they can't rerent the car without a plate they add five days rental. Well looking back I highly suspect it was intended to fall off so give the plates a little pull and make sure they're attached when you pick the car up.

    I believe this is happening in the US ! We were targeted in Houston, TX, within a 30m window thieves did a smash and grab, they seemed to know where the vehicle was (an easy get away spot near hwy). It was WAY TOO COINCIDENTAL for me to believe they randomly saw our car and knew that we had luggage in back! I believe there are insiders at the rental car companies or ex employees that have access to the gps tracking for the vehicles! Even though cops said this wasn't the case.

    To add to your comment of ": ...the blurry photo of the perps and the recovered stolen goods" Common in MX, photos of cops wearing mask, a large stash of narcotics and guns displayed and the perps lined up with eyes blurred. Absolutely no follow up by the newspapers.
    I had an incident on a second class bus between Cd del Carmen and Campeche. Waiting in the Carmen terminal, I saw a bus driver stop and talk to what appeared to be two passenger waiting for a bus. I thought this odd, because at this time I had been working/living in MX for eight years. Hereto for I had never, and I repeat never, seen a bus driver engage in conversation with a passenger seated in the terminal. On boarding the bus I noticed the bus driver was deadheading and sitting in the jump seat in front. I dozed off intermittently during the 2hr bus ride In between Carmen and Champoton. Champoton is the only intermittent stop on this route. Partially awake, I saw the dead head driver go to the back of the bus. This was very odd, because this bus did not have a toilet. The dead head driver got off at some small town. The bus continued to Champoton. The only passengers that got off were the two men sitting in the back, I recognized as talking to the dead head driver in Carmen. When I arrived in Campeche my computer bag, stored in the overhead was empty.

Can you tell me the best way to go about renting a car and how to handle the insurance part? I have heard so many stories about scams involving rental cars. • @Alfredoram20
      @Alfredoram20 Před rokem

      You are able to carry pepper spray, knifes or other non firearms. Fire arms are definitely illegal, there are ways to get a permit for buying them. But only for your lawn protection. There is no way you will be allowed to carrying a weapon on the streets or in your car.

    • @Alfredoram20
      @Alfredoram20 Před rokem

      Those permits are really difficult to get. But if shooting is your hobby, there are shooting some shooting ranges across the country. But the gun caliber is very regulated and it would be a really headache to pass an army checkpoint without carrying papers. Concluding: having guns in Mexico is really hard and expensive.
