Im an ecologist who runs a self-sufficient farm, and the best thing that you can do for the environment is eat grass fed. The reason cows produce so much in the way of methane is because they are being fed massive amounts of grains. These grains cause acidosis in the rumen and kills the microbiome. So they end up with a microbiome imbalance in their rumens, and they can't properly digest the food. This causes a build-up of gas and causes very watery diarrhea that these poor animals have to stand in. So by eating grass fed, you are paying for a cow who was out on pasture and allowed to eat his natural diet, so he's not producing so much in the way of emissions. He's not tied up in a barn standing in his own waste, so you're also being more humane. A grass fed cow really does only have one bad day in his life. Ok, 2 bad days because im sure castration isn't fun. Also, think of the happy chickens, pigs, ducks, and all of the other animals who are pooping outside where it can be used up by plants and keeping the soil healthy, rather than in a barn that gets cleaned a few times a year and piled up into huge mounds where it isn't used for anything. Even better if you have space and can grow some of your own vegetables along with buying grass fed meat and dairy. This is how you help animals and the environment.

Hats off to Dr. Lyon! I can't over emphasize the importance of diet, but I want to really emphasize exercise and muscle enhancement in the aging population. I am just now turning 71 years old and also entering my 56th year with Juvenile Diabetes (aka T1D). In 1969 my endocrinologist assured me I would never live beyond my early 30s and I would suffer from blindness, kidney failure and neuopathy (so far - I have none of those complications). At the time of my diagnosis, I was a very active teenager doing everything including weightlifting. At 71, I still lift heavty weights twice/week and ride a spinning bike 4 days/week. I am currently in a research program at the Barbara Davis center to study bone density in diabetics and my T-scores are all above 1.0 and my Z-scores of significantly above 1.0. Basically this means my bone density is very very good for my age and probably way above normal.
Because of my muscle mass, I am stronger, more balanced and healthier than any of my peers. I believe that anyone above the age of 60 can build muscle/strength and live without fear of hurting themselves! Just Do It!...........Larry

Your point about bodybuilders and athletes is great but also double edged, as those populations also overconsume both carbohydrates AND calories as well as protein. So, if they don't have a disproportionate occurrence of cancer, then it would single out obesity as the primary driver of these disease states, or perhaps lack of activity or lack of adequate muscle mass. We're now learning about myokines, which may in themselves be health promoting to the point of preventing these diseases.

No scientist is simply involved in the single-minded pursuit of truth, he or she is also engaged in the passionate pursuit of research grants and professional success. Nutritionists may wish to attack malnutrition, but they also wish to earn their living in ways they find congenial.” This inevitably encourages researchers to “make a case...” Reminds me of the present case.

Great conversation. She is correct, it takes so long to put muscle mass on. I've been lifting for 28 years (46 now). The past year I've really been pushing myself, while avoiding overtraining injuries. If my body weight scale is correct, I put on 5.6lbs of muscle in 8 months. Doesn't sound like a lot, but at my age without the help of test or gear I think it's pretty decent. A1C, BP cholesterol are all perfect and I take zero meds. I've never taken a prescription medication in my life (other than antibiotics for an infected cut).

I just turned 60 years old - so very sad Lyon said no fasting for 60 yrs old.... I put on about 20 lbs of body fat every 3 months (hopefully a bit of muscle too)... then I fast for 2 weeks (2 weeks if I am good and don't cheat) and lose the 20 pounds. Rinse & repeat... over & over. Now I can dance salsa for 4 hours straight and outlast ladies in their 20s (ladies are fit are good regular dancers but don't have the stamina). Fast is a nothing but water fast. Only add vitamins and a carnatine+taurine+creatine+salts drink (salts:electrolytes/minerals) Seems to work for me: last 3 months 178 lbs to 158 lbs to 176 lbs, about time for another fast 🙂Another youtuber claimed you get a natural 20 times!!! increase in HGH immediately after coming off a long fast - not seen a white paper on it so not sure if this is true.

the first muscles to go will be the core too heavy or too light it needs to protect the spine and keep it functional and fluid
without a correctly aligned spine you can't maintain the mental state you need to be optimal

Okay. I'm all in on the need to take in a gram of protein for every pound of body weight. But what about people like me who are on SNAP Benefits (food stamps) and on disability? By definition, this means we have very little money to be buying meat and protein supplements. What can be done to actually get Congress to increase SNAP benefits so that people like us can afford to eat a nutritious diet given the price of eggs, which used to be a pretty cheap source of protein?

3:41 because of C14, our cells and our DNA are in constant decay so we need protein for maintenance, and growth. People really are far too protein deficient, while overly carbed up for not being athletes, or long-hour workers

Kindly disagree on the fasting subject on the elderly, fasting can help them specially because of the cellular recycling component (autophagy), HGH improvement, natural antioxidant production increases and just overall better insulin sensitivity in general 🤷🏻‍♂️
