I am an artist (hobbyist) and I've always dreamed to be an artist like Junji Ito. I want to terrify people , but also make people feel like they don't want to take their eyes off the horror.
Also, Ito's art is very hard to translate to animation since your own imagination is your best tool. So when you see static images in manga, your brain is your best storyteller.

That's the best kind of horror! You want to look away, but for whatever reason, your eyes are fixated. Maybe because your brain is trying to make sense of it
Personally I think the original source material is the best. If there's anything Junji Into can't do that is to disappoint us. The man has every significant skill at the very tips of his fingertips.
My favourite thing about this movie is that the pace of the movie is a spiral.
A slow wide view of the plot, even the early scene of that weird transition wipe with the melon. But as it goes on the pace and madness gets faster and faster like drawing the outside of the spiral first and going inward.
Also throughout horror movie talk through people who don't read manga/watch anime think this is a sequel to Ringu. Listen I know Ringu had some weird sequels movie wise but this is not the adaption yo!

I need to read more of Junji Ito. I’ve seen his Collection and Tomie: Unlimited films already and they were pretty good, Tomie did its best. Need to find and read this manga asap.

Im so happy you covered this movie! This film was actually my first experience with anything Junji Ito so it means a lot to me. Its not as good as the manga, but its also hard to adapt a long manga into a movie and Ive always thought they did a good job. The visuals are super quirky and well done for the time.
I’m super excited for the Uzumaki anime coming to Adult Swim, I’ve been waiting a long time for it and it being in black and white makes me even happier. Uzumaki was the first horror manga I ever read and it stuck with me for a long time after reading it.

Despite being different from the manga itself. It’s still a pretty good live action horror adaptation. I’d definitely gonna check this movie out. I seriously can’t wait for AdultSwim’s take on Uzumaki.

Love your videos and your new channel! I'm surprised you haven't done the Voices yet with Ryan Reynolds. Nobody ever recommended it to me, I watched it one day out of the blue, and that movie did something to me most don't, especially ones with major Hollywood actors. When the colorful happy veil is lifted and you see the reality, that hit me like a truck, but it even gets stupid dark in his beautified perspective.
Voices is so good!!! Super disturbing and unexpected. Love it.

I find it funny how junji was saying it was sort of mid since he didn't like the way it felt. So that's why he is now sticking to his original black and white style which I'm still waiting for it to release soon

I think Uzumaki totally works best as a TV show because there’s just so many different events all going on to the point where shortening it down to a single movie means you either rush through the concepts too quickly or have to cut out the majority of the content. Makes me wish we got an Uzumaki series that actually go through every story until the bitter end because it truly just keeps ramping up and up and up until the big climax of the entire town turning into the spiral and seeing the deep underground of it all. Maybe the upcoming Toonami series will be able to deliver some of that eventually, but from the looks of it we’ll only be getting 4 episodes which I assume will be adapting the first 4 chapters? I guess we’ll have to wait and see

The medium is the message: Ito's work dont seem to translate properly to audiovisual works, because of how he structured the stories and uses the page turn to create tension, somehow, out of so many tries, no one has been able to translate that into movies or animations.
Let's see how the new Uzumaki animation will do.
I love this video along with your others, and I also love this film as it genuinely brought parts of the manga to life (and made me feel, sick with fear). But I think that it's worth mentioning that (as far as I know) this film was released before the manga was finished.

I hope the upcoming series does the manga justice. I agree that an adaptation of the manga would work far better as a series than as a movie. The movie had to rush through the chapters and awkwardly end the story. The movie ending lacked the impact of the manga, which had Kirie and Shuichi embracing each other in death, staring at each other instead of the spiral like everyone else.

it's a good enough movie on its own that has the unfair disadvantage of having to inevitably be compared to its superior source material. it's not on the level of the akira movie, but essentially they share the same problem: they're good when viewed in their own right, but they were never going to capture the scope of the original. which is okay, because there's only so much you can do in 1.5 hours, even in akira's 2 hours.
WHAT? why I never know this for years even tho I read all of Junji Ito's manga n only watch Tomie LA, I thought it was only Tomie that has it's own LA treatment, I gotta watch this for myself

I love the uzumaki manga only not the ending. Both of them deserve a happy ending, and tbh the 2 of them seem like the only sane characters not like any of other junji ito's series main character
