FYI: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is an excellent novel. The ending has a "Stranger in a Strange Land" vibe.
I read the book first and ended up a little bit disappointed with the movie, for as long as it was, they cut out some good stuff!
@@eVanDiesel I felt the same way.
Past Lives, Sanctuary, Talk to Me and Theater Camp are (at this point) my top films of the year. Thank you for this list. Now I can find more gems.
There is just SO much to stream nowadays that your videos are a godsend in helping me narrow it down and make more worthwhile choices. Love what you do!!! :)
Thank you !!!
TY for recommending "Dead Silence". It brings back memories of The Twilight Zone episode, "The Dummy", and from The Tales from the Crypt episode, "The Ventriloquist's Dummy". I can't believe I've never seen this before.
Oo! did you like it?
@@spookyastronauts Yep. I simply didn't know it existed. I'm a scifi and horror nerd from the core, so I love these things.
You need to watch The Wire. That was the first time I ever saw Idris Elba and had no idea he was British until much later.
Perfume is a masterpiece; the novel was considered un-filmable for a long time, but Tom Tykwer made a gorgeous adaption.
23:52 that voice alter was so spot on 👌
As soon as you asked "Have you ever watched a movie where everything that could go wrong goes wrong" and I immediately thought of Beau is Afraid heh.
hahha I always think of Mother!
It is so wonderful that you got to see perfume! It was one of my mother's favorite movies as well as mine❤
Perfume has been a top favorite for quite some time. I’m glad to hear you also enjoyed it. I try not to compare it to the book and enjoy it as a stand alone thing. So many well known actors! I’m surprised how underrated it is.
I always enjoy your wrap-up videos, thanks! I´m too a big fan of Yorgos Lanthimos. My favorite film of his is The Lobster. Such a fun, weird and disturbing story. I´m really looking forward to seeing Poor things.
Ended up watching Some Velvet Morning this morning, it's also on Peacock in the USA
Once a year i watch Dead Silence together with Drag me to Hell (not simultaneously tho) For some reason they both give me the same vibe
I loved Sanctuary .. it made me want to watch Secretary again. Great interaction between the two actors. Clever film.
SANCCCTTUUAARRRRYYYYY
theatre camp was so funny and sweet i absolutely loved it
Sanctuary was such a pleasant surprise. Thank you for recommending it. You always find those non-horror hidden gems like that TV show Unreal. It's stuff I might not usually watch, but with your recommendation, I do and end up loving it. 🤘
Also, Patrick Süskind's original novel of Perfume is mind blowing - a real page turner. When I heard they were making it into a film I was apprehensive because I did not think they would do the climax justice... but indeed 🤭...
Perfume was the most interesting engaging movie I've seen in a very long time. I was glued to the screen the entire runtime
Thanks for the tip on Sanctuary Emma. I've been following Margaret Qualley's career, and this sounds excellent. I'm largely off of streaming services now (except during Octobers), but they did release a DVD of it (no Blu-ray) and it's on its way.
love love loveee your videos, hope your well and sending positivity
Hi! Have you seen Dark Windows? It was released August 18th, and there is only one review on IMDB, very accurate: "Dark Windows" was a one of the great low-budget surprises that show up once in a while if you're a genre fan. Given the familiar storyline, I was just sort of hoping it would be serviceable but it was so much more that that. It lets its secrets unfold slowly and organically, and plays very cleverly on our expectations. It knows what we are expecting and then delivers something different.
Technically, it's great -- well lit and clear sound. We spend most of the film with just our main three characters and the acting is uniformly excellent among all of them. And it nailed the ending, playing out in a way that was totally unexpected to me and was far nastier and harsher than I anticipated."
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
The Ghost Stories play is one of the best things I've ever seen. It is so cleverly done and I couldn't sleep that night the first time I saw it 😂. The UK tour was cancelled due to covid in 2020, I just hope it tours further afield one day!
So much this month, Emma!
I can’t wait to see Sanctuary. Glad to see a trusted seal of approval!!
I love "Ghost Stories", "Magic" is also a good movie, my father recommend it to me like your channel 👌👌👌
Emma, you crack me up! 'Perfume' "working up to a big payoff" LOLOL. Good one!!!
it's so interesting to hear your comments on Elba and his American accent (I haven't seen bastille day)! Have you watched the Wire? His American accent is really good in that and lots of folks say they had no idea he is English after watching the Wire! thanks for another great upload :)
Was going to ask this!
Yes I fell in love with him on the wire! You’re right his accent was much better then, but after Luther I just can’t go back!
Silly bit of trivia: Nirvana's song Scentless Apprentice was based on the book of Perfume: Story of a Murderer.
😱 🎶 GO AWAY !!! 🎶
@@davidellis5141 Haha I thought you were saying that to me but then I realized that's the main lyric lol....
@@danielcarlson5362 👍 .. Yep , I wasn't trolling .. now I need to read the book. Thanks 😊
@@davidellis5141 No problem :) And Emma's right...the movie's wild!
Watching Sanctuary in a small cinema made it feel a touch more personal. Really enjoyed the characters and their mind games. Pity though that I could hear another film in an adjoining cinema during the quieter moments, which broke my concentration at times.
I really enjoyed Some Velvet Morning, I checked it out after your previous video, thanks for the recomendation. That end was not what I expected at all, I was expecting something completely different. But I wasn't disappointed, it paid off.
I’m so here for these monthly updates
I love the Blair witch project so much, it such a go to comfort movie for when the spooky months start! If anyone knows anything that gives off a similar vibe. Please let me know!
You've sold me on Some Velvet Morning I have to check it out!
Slowdive do a nice cover of the song 🎵
21:08 "The Pope's Exorcism" - now there is a concept for a movie. Can just picture some actor portraying the Pope and delivering some of Regan's lines from the '73 film.
Demeter will def be in my top 10
I’ve missed a couple of your videos, it’s funny that you recommended a Tucci movie on American Tubi. People like to hate in Tubi, but they have a couple horror gems that they rotate.
Richard attenborough, nice! He did real well in jurassic park. That Sunday movie (can't remember the full name), the ending seems so cheap to me, I doubt I'd be impressed even without being spoiled.
I love love loved sanctuary. It was such a crazy ride
You saw a lot of good ones sis!🤔 Good reviews and cool video Emma!👉😃👈
didn't actually expect to hear about tmnt here even just in passing but after finally having gotten myself to binge rise over the weekend maybe this is the last little push i needed to go watch mutant mayhem :)
I love these videos. I open my Letterbox'd and follow along :)
So I had to say, I enjoyed Demeter too - I also expected not too much I think - just your basic cat and mouse with a vampire in one location because what else could it be? I have a little bit of a nit pick about how I wanted the ending to go, but basically I liked it and SPOILER...

I was actually really impressed the killed the kid and then for a minute I thought - oh no, they are going to back away from it, he's not dead, but then of course, turning into a vampire, they went for it. I can't decide which would have been more impactful. I also watched Cobweb just a week or two later and thought - hey, this kid is pretty good! :)
"it was fine, really, it was fine"... 😂😂
"funny thing about the future" - certainly news to me. thanks for letting us know.
Review of Oppenheimer- “It was fine, it was fine, it was fine, it was fine, it was fine….. it was fine”
Sanctuary sounds sooo good!
your intro is so cool!!!!
Thanks for these videos. They help me sift the wheat from the chaff. I meant to mention a disturbing film you might enjoy adding to your disturbing films list. As well as The Cement Garden, another Ian MacEwan book was adapted to film earlier with The Comfort Of Strangers (1990). It stars Christopher Walken, Helen Mirren, Rupert Everett and Natasha Richardson. I swear it's a trip...
Thank you! im noting it down!
Have you watched , Who is Erin Carter ? So good 👍
I second that 👍 Erin rules !
Just watched episode 4 .. so intense !
I love TMNT too!!! Can't wait to see it on Fri!!
I just watched a Shudder Exclusive Dark and The Wicked normally I don't love these possession movies. But this one I loved I wondered if you saw this one Emma?
Great 😊

RIP William Friedkin. 8/7/23…
Thats so funny that some one complained about a video being too horrific!
Your enthusiasm for magic makes me wonder if you have ever seen Pin (1988)? Very similar - Very clever, uncomfortable viewing which hits the sweet spot between psychological thriller and psychological horror PERFECTLY. Leaves the audience straddling the two genres. Would love to know your thoughts.
Hi, I’m new around here. What app are you using on your phone to keep up with what you watch?
Love your content as always!
I'm going to have to check out Command Z. That and Hijack. Too many shows, I don't have time!
You need to watch Sisu!!❤❤
Has Birth/Rebirth come out there yet? Did I miss your review?
Also didn’t love Bastille day, but Idris Elba doesn’t have a good American accent?? Stringer Bell?? He must have phoned it in for Bastille Day 😂😂
Yeah dude watch it… I don’t know if it was that particular accent… but it was baddddd
I remember watching Alps a long time ago. The concept was interesting but the movie was too confusing. A much better Greek drama i highly recommend is Miracle of the Saragossa Sea with the same actress i think.
Nice thank you!
Of course you like Michaelangelo he's a party dude! 🍕
hes the best! thanks Matt
Another good movie about faith and science - my fav of all time - Contact. Based on the book by Carl Sagan.
interesting i dont think ive heard of this one! thank you
wait how havent I seen this!? huge cast!
@@spookyastronauts yep! Jodie foster and Matthew himself lol. But it’s written by the same dude who wrote the original cosmos series. He’s amazing and my favorite and scientist who made sense of just everything. Just a profound person I wish I would have met at least once. I warn you it’s long but it worth it.
Between sanctuary and piercing, you think Christopher Abbott is being type cast?
Not at all he’s done a bunch of other stuff I mean possessor was wild!
I agree with you Emma about Idris 😂 English accent only. 👏🏾
Have you seen Burke and Hare with Simon Pegg? It’s a strange but interesting, dark story…and it’s based on real people!
I dont think so! thanks for the recommendation!
Perfume is so disturbing to me! I love it tho, such an amazing and sad story
Loooove Perfume, been meaning to re-watch it again. Those final scenes have stuck with me since I first watched it.😅
Shame about Elevator Game though. I love the director as a person and her podcast, but her filmography has been VERY hit-or-miss.
Yeah I dont know what happened with the movie, it may have been a producing choice of how they were going to do it.
I can’t believe you watched Bad Things and didn’t realize it was inspired by The Shining until this recording lol
haha
Have you watched "Godless: the eastfield exorcism?" Please if you watch this movie give us an explanation because this movie is not available in my region.
No I havent its not out here
🖤
I wasn't crazy about Perfume. A oldie but goodie. My goodness - early 2000's? I know I was out of college when I saw it. For me, I believe at that time, I wasn't overly impressed- I'm sorry! I still think it should be highlighted on here
Dont be sorry!
Never let Idris do an American accent ??? hmm Stringer Bell would have something to say about this! :D
Serving
I will watch anything that Idris Elba is in. And I agree let him keep his amazing accent ❤
My friend Cameron was the cop who got his brains blow out in sympathy for the devil. I sent him a screenshot after watching and said "sorry about your brains." But yeah, not a great flick unfortunately.
Some Velvet Morning was better than I expected. I can't stand Neil LaBute -- I detest him, not only as a filmmaker but as a person -- so I was fully expecting to hate it, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I liked Nefarious lmao
Idris Elba = Stringer Bell... I was convinced he was American back then 🤷♂️
haha
Magic is based on one segment from the 1945 anthology horror film Dead of Night. It's on Shudder at the moment and well worth a watch.
I actually enjoyed Bad Things, maybe it was The Shining references or the queer horror aspects which gave me an affection for it.
One film I really, really didn't like was The Blackening, which was the worst film I've seen in the cinema for years. It's boring, the characters are annoying and lacks both horror and comedy.
Sadly, Voyage of the Demeter didn't make it to many UK cinemas due to some legal nonsense or other.
I’ve seen Dead of Night never thought they were connected, didn’t find that in any of the info when I researched it. Interesting!
sympathy for the devil is probably the worst movie I've seen all year.
Agreed 😊
Nefarious is so common and mediocre low budget direct to dvd stuff i dont get why has so much hype
Emma, Have you seen the movie *Dogs Don't Wear Pants* ? I see you like Sanctuary.
It's in the same vain. It's very different. I should say that I haven't seen Sanctuary, but they sound similar.
I'm glad you mentioned Past Lives because I've been looking for it. I saw the trailer in the movie theater,
but all I could remember was Celine. Going to take a look at the Stanely Tucci movie too. Big fan of him.
Been getting a lot of movie recommendations from the Criterion Channel here on CZcams.
Just watched First Cow from a recommendation. I enjoyed it.
So many great new and older movies I've been watching.
In Cold Blood, Man Escapes, The Cranes Are Flying, Badlands, The Apartment, etc.
OK, off to watch Past Lives then maybe Sanctuary.
Thank you.
I dont think i have seen it thank you!
Velvet morning really isn't disturbing. I was pointing out the social ramifications consuming movies like that have on society and what it normalizes for your viewing pleasure. You seemed to completely ignore that part of the commentary.
The movie itself is boring, long winded and unremarkable except for the 10 minute gimmicky end. That's why it was surprising you suggested it, not because it's super edgy or controversial. Any of the foreign movies from your previous disturbing lists make Velvet Morning seem like a bad soft core porn.
All this said, I'm still grateful you made the list and don't expect to like all suggestions.
do you know ...Minty Comedic Arts ?
Not a good list of this month 😊😊😊
Nefarious left me feeling dirty after I found out it’s written by the guy who did the ‘God’s Not Dead’ which is blatant Christian propaganda. Same with this film and it’s heavy handed themes.
Hey 👋 Emma💋🩷🌈🦋🌹👼🏻👼🏿☀️✨🎃
Cobweb
Hated Perfume.😵
I don't get the love for Idris Elba. He's an ok actor, always the same and most of his projects suck.
Lots of women think he’s hot… he’s a bit of a Tom hardy type , not really that good and same roles
@@millierosse1558 Tom Hardy is way hotter and far more talented.
Meh he doesn’t do it for me @@Bluebox87
Come on, post the list in the comments so we can copy it. It isn't so hard to do and would save us so much time.
It’s on an app! That’s the whole point, you can use the app and copy them directly to your watch list. If you follow me on letterboxd you have the whole thing. It’s in the comment section of every video.
WHAT APP IS THIS????
