*Spoiler alert* That last scene between them, when they realize they can never be together and they will probably not see each other again, he says to her “this is a past life”, referring to the Korean idea of “in-yun”/past lives/destiny they mention throughout the film, and he wonders if they will meet again in another life…it’s absolutely heartbreaking. I have not been able to forget that moment. Beautiful film.
This appeared as the top comment for me and your spoiler alert wasnt enough to prevent me from reading the sentence next to it. I think i made a huge mistake by clicking on this video and a worse one by reading your comment. Perhaps you could help others like me to not do the same by separating a bit the spoiler alert from the actual spoiler. If the information isnt as important as i think it is i will delete or update this comment.
@redo2694 why do I find your comment so funny .. lol .. I dunno. Have a great day
@@redo2694 Huh 😂
See you 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯… ugh that broke me
Ses you then…. That was great.
This movie is film lovers' paradise. The way it's shot is icing on the cake. Adult Hae sung takes the prize for me. He really makes you believe that "eyes speak". Every time Hae sung looks at Nora , you see the pain and the longing for his good old friend. Most heartbreaking part is all the three people feel they're incomplete in their own ways.
his eye acting was insane. such a gut wrenching ending
there are no heroes or villains, just normal people trying to reconcile their history with their future.
I love what you said.
🎉
Spoiler Alert!
I think at the very end... Hae Sung found closure. He was never rude to Nora during the entire film... but while waiting for the Uber on the final scene, he tells Nora "You are the one who always leaves". This is absolutely true as Nora leaves him as children to go to Canada and then she leaves him again when reconnected 12 years after to focus on her career. Those words from Hae Sung broke her (literally) when she (once again) becomes a "crybaby" in the arms of Arthur. Wow... powerful stuff!!!
I really like the realistic dialogues. The long silences between the two main sometimes just sitting there without saying anything because there is so much TO BE said. And the realistic ending too.
I’d highly recommend “A ghost story” if you’ve yet to see it. Another wonderful example of massive amounts of story and emotion with relatively little dialogue.
I saw this movie with my grandma. I was hesitant because I wasn’t sure if she likes indie/arthouse movies, let alone ones primarily in a foreign language. But she loved it, she resinated a lot with the messages of growth from hardship and cultural connections due to emigrating from Canada.
We’re now gonna see more Indie movies together now.
That's beautiful. It's such a gift to connect with an elder over shared preferences. You're literally her future and she's your past and you're meeting in the present with love and appreciation.
Watched last night, just wow. What an emotional rollercoaster ride that was. The yearning for a life that could have been was so beautifully portrayed. That keyboard detail was just spot on, very relatable.
Loved this film; even more so the second time I watched it. Head and shoulders above other films that have broached a similar subject...just on another level. I just think the writing, acting and production values were spot on, and a pretty incredible first effort. Given the story is based on the writer-director's own experiences, it will be interesting to see if Celine Song's next project whatever it may be, resonates as much as this first one.
I think it hits those of us who have lived more life. I think it hits deeper for me than for a 20 or 30-something year old. It forces you to look back at your own life and wonder what it would look like if you had chosen a different path, and that applies to just about anything. In the end, you can't focus on things so much that it will cause regret - people make choices that were right for them at the time they made them. Some of us would have done exactly the same thing even if we had 20-20 foresight.
I was enjoying the story unfolding, just watching and letting it play out. I thought the conversation Nora had with Arthur in bed was so well written, as well as the conversation Nora and Hae Sung had at the bar, and the one Hae Sung then had with Arthur. Adult conversations. No manipulations or silly, Hollywood-style conclusions.
Then that last act, with the camera tracking Nora and Hae Sung as she walked him to his Uber in silence. With hardly a word spoken, they say goodbye and she walks back to find Arthur waiting at the steps. The moment she broke down, tears came leaking out of my eyeballs, lol.
Who knows what the future holds for any of us? I guess I just have to be thankful for the connections I've made in this life and enjoy them for what they are, and what they were.
I've seen this film twice, and the second time was just as rewarding as the first. It's become one of my all time top 10 films... 'nuff said.
Your top 10 films... would you mind sharing the names
@@rahulrana7612 - Sorry for the late reply. Please keep in mind these are not etched in stone and are listed in no particular order:
- Casablanca
- Rebel Without Cause
- Seven Samurai
- Saturday Night Fever
- Kramer vs. Kramer
- American Beauty
- Casino Royale
- Past Lives
- Pulp Fiction
- Sin City
Honorable mention: When Harry Met Sally, Unforgiven, (Leon) The Professional, Bend It Like Beckham, Rear Wiindow, Memento. So many films, but these are the ones that normally come to mind. What are your top 10 favorites?
My wife loves good romances and I suck at finding them... thanks for this review! Look forward to watching it with her.
Glad to see you back!
Thank you!
I don't normally like "character study" type movies but this movie blew me away. The universal themes of making life choices, diverting paths, regrets, and grace resonated with me. This is the type of movie that you can see three times and each time is like peeling an onion and you see different nuances you did not notice the previous time. It's like a master class in movie making (i won't be surprised if they use this film in film school for future students).
This review made me cry (don’t worry, in a good way). Absolutely seeing this film, hopefully as soon as this weekend 🤞
Can't wait for you to see the movie and love it!
Great review and I loved Past Lives. It’s my favorite film of the year so far! I especially liked John Magaro’s performance as the husband. I thought he was incredible and such an integral piece of the film 🙏🏼
This movie capped off a sort of Korean film trilogy for me this year. Return to Seoul, Riceboy Sleeps and Past Lives all hit me hard emotionally, and are three of the best movies I’ve seen. I’ve been waiting for your longer review on Past Lives after your short review over on Letterboxd. Thankfully, I didn’t have to drive home after this one. 💜
I believe there is going to be an anniversary rescreening of Old boy this year. A very different type of film to be sure but an eye opening introduction to Korean cinema for many people.
@@AhBeeDoi A proper watch of Oldboy has been on my list forever. Fingers crossed that we get some screenings up here in Canada.
Beautiful analysis. You touch upon all the beats I felt as well. Best film of 2023 so far IMO.
If you'd been gone just a bit longer Marianna this review might have been your CZcams version of this film. I find departures and returns quite fascinating. And we don't get enough of them in films. You have put another film on my list of films to watch once again. Thanks for returning!
Thanks for sticking around! I hope you enjoy the movie!
Wow… I’m literally scared to watch this now 🥺 sounds so close to my soul and life
Yea mamy of us could relate to this movie but hey I m glad I saw it!
Don't be scared. It's very affirming.
Well said... This is my first review of yours to watch and I'm looking forward to seeing more. You put in to words how I feel about this film, after having just seen it a couple hours ago.
This is a fantastic film and your review is spot on!
Watched it today and loved it, walking out emotionally shaken (and still am). The movie's ending, and to some extent the "In-Yeon" theme, reminded me of another great romance movie made in Taiwan called "You're the Apple of My Eye".
Anecdotally, this applies to true friendships too. I grew up with my childhood buddy whose half-Korean, until he immigrated to the US (abruptly due to family issues) at around 15yr of age and like in the movie, we lost in touch for a while. I went on to study in a different country, but also made effort to "stalked" him on Friendster (pre-Facebook era) hoping that one day we could re-establish connection. Like in the movie, we finally got to meet after more than a 12yrs of not seeing each other, in Seoul! We are still good friends to this day. Definitely a lot of bittersweet knowing that neither of us are going to give up our own lives to be with the other.
Best film of 2023. Such a simple film but masterfully orchestrated on film
Your absence confirms how much your followers enjoy your content. Glad you have returned. Great review as usual. I think you nailed it. And what I mean by that is we are on the same page.
This is a movie I’ve known about for months, but I simply ignored/put-off watching it because it cuts deep for me. I’ve often been left wondering “what if…” or considered how things could’ve turned out differently.
For what seems like half of my life, I’ve felt cursed with the mental torment of “is this the right choice?”
I put off watching this movie because it forces me to evaluate my life as a sequence of events and the consequences of my actions and inactions.
Watching them on Skype takes me back to a time in life that I’ve never been able to shake. It’s always there with me. It’s as if I’m watching my younger self through a strangers eyes. I’m not old, but I feel old when I think about them. There’s a part of my that feels lost throughout the years.
Your reviews always take careful note of emotions, yours and those of the characters in the movie. It's one of your hallmarks. But you're also a pro. You cover all the aspects of theme and execution in this movie. I've seen it and I admire it as much as you do. But you're not just good here in this review. You're expert. Congratulations on understanding this movie's depth and its importance. btw, yes, there's a long time yet to go in the year, but an Oscar BP nom seems to me a lock. The win? Definitely possible. A Greta Lee Best Actress nom? All but locked. Stay well. I'm already a subscriber.
It’s so great to see you back Marianna. I’ve really missed your channel recently, and this was a fantastic review. Really enjoyed it. I have heard amazing things about this film, so I am very excited to watch this one. Can’t wait to check it out. Good to see you back.👍
Thank you so much! It's good to be back, and thank you for sticking around!
@@ImpressionBlend no worries Marianna.👍
Your comeback video is Past Lives?? Let’s gooooooooo
Hey fam!
My current favorite of the year must have a review from me!
Welcome back!! Catching this movie this afternoon thanks to this review, cant WAIT.
Thank you! What did you think of the movie?
Questioning what to see next and stumbled on this; certainly intrigued, although wait list for another time.
Thanx xcelt review.
Past lives and what could've been..I suppose it's a theme to which we can all relate. Thanks for the recommendation, Marianna. Welcome back.
Thank you!
One of the best of the year so far.
I suspect it will remain among the year's best
Glad you’re back!!!
It's on my list to see! Thanks for the review!
Great to have you back! 🙌
Welcome back, Marianna.😀👍 I am eagerly waiting for your 'Oppenheimer' review.💥
Thanks! I'm eagerly waiting for my screening of "Oppenheimer"!
Welcome back! Funny that Dune Part 2 - trailer 2 was released today when you mentioned it and I’m hyped!
Haha perfect timing ))
Film of the year for me…..beautifully shot on 35mm too
shooting on native doesn't naturally make it better. the plot is gross.
You have been spot on with great movies to watch, Thanks for your recommendations.
Thank you for watching!
Best film of 2023 I’ve seen so far.
so glad to see you back!
This looks great! I have to see this. Thanks, Marianna. You've never steered me wrong.
Hope you like it!
@@ImpressionBlend This movie blew me away! It is without doubt the best movie of 2023 and I am so glad it is in my collection. There is nothing phoney about this story and I teared up many times.
Glad to see you back! I am eagerly waiting for your tv series review.
The best film of the year to me. A mastepiece. A human rollercoaster of emotions on its pure form. No villains, no heroes, just people living their lives and
and bearing the consequences of their choices.
So what’s the best film now? Since you said ‘until now’ which means something happened or some other movie came along that made this film no longer the best film.
@@myytchanneldinakoha8498 Sorry for my bad English, i didn't mean to say that. I'm still learning.
Thank you for covering such a beautiful movie. Subscribed for more such content!
Was thinking about seeing this, definitely will now with your recommendation.
Glad to see you back it has been to long
I saw this movie today, good movie. and it was like watching an Before Korean melodrama movie. The lines and themes were similar. And the emotional scene of meeting a friend reminded me of a Korean TV show about meeting a school friend a long time ago. 😊
I went to see this today! Sooooo good! It’s definitely one of my favorite movies this year!
When will you review ‘Indiana Jones and the dial of density’???
I'm glad you loved it!
Not sure about Indy - it's not very high on my priority list, but there are some very exciting July movies I can't wait to talk about ;)
Great review - I will admit I was expecting the film to lead us into a deeply entangled love triangle in the final act but it didn’t.
It completely sidestepped that predictable dramatic progression for something more realistic, which I wasn’t expecting.
Regardless, Greta Lee and Teo Yoo’s acting were brilliant and the scenes in the 3rd act were great (namely the restaurant conversation between Nora and Hae Sung).
I liked the film, wasn’t absolutely in love with it but it’s something I may come to understand and appreciate more by re-watching.
The whole time I was watching this movie I was very aware of how I was breathing: deep and slow, like I was meditating. And then that ending hit and brought back some memories and BAM the feelings came for me. I think anyone could resonate with this, we all have our what ifs and our past lives. What an absolutely lovely film ❤
Amazing review as always!
Yoooo. You're back. I got worried for a moment and thought something serious happened to you outside of the matrix❤😊
I'm good, sometimes reality calls ))
Glad you're back. Hope the life stuff wasn't too dramatic. :)
I also have high hopes for Oppenheimer. But Dune 2 is definitely my most anticipated.
I just saw it and it's a keeper. Greta Lee is wonderful.
I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!!!
So far the best film of the year, to me, is Spider-Man Across The Spiderverse. That being said, you've left me highly intrigued about this movie. I'm not sure we'll get this film on the big screen where I live, but I will definitely find a way to watch it. Great to hear your thoughts on film again
Aww thank you!! Whenever you get the chance to see it - don't miss it, its a beautiful film.
Welcome back. Long time no see 👀 Glad to see you back doing what you enjoy 😊
Thank you! I'm glad to finally be back!
Totally get the keyboard thing.
I’ve been looking forward to this and after this review even more so especially as a child immigrant myself.
I hope you love it as much as I did!
I missed you! 🙂
I just watched this again. This movie is breathtaking. If you haven't seen it, see it. The performances.......perfection. ❤❤
Shes back! what perfect timing for me
Haha how so?
@@ImpressionBlend I watch basically everything you recommend and I ran out!
😮 She returns!
Good to see you back! Am I allowed to ask why you haven’t posted a video in over a month?
I'm totally going to watch this film
It's also a modern day fairytale involving many past lives. Song uses two lifetimes, one before, and the other after their reunion in person, beautifully stitched by the subway going into the tunnel.
Thanks for the review. I'll check the movie out next week. Also gotta support my fellow Song. We're all distant relatives if you are a Korean Song, haha.
Haha enjoy!
@@ImpressionBlend I saw the movie this week. I absolutely loved it. Thanks again for recomending it. The male character's name Hae Sung means comet which is a cool name but I was wondering if the director was conveying something through his name. Like the Hally's comet that comes around every 80 years symbolizing the lives we've lived. Could be a bit far fetched but thought it was interesting to think it that way.
I saw and felt in Past Lives what i was looking to feel in After sun last year and The Farewell a few years back.
Welcome back Queen 👑
Thank you ))
Love this film. Lived up to expectations and crushed me at the end. A unique and beautiful film.
A gorgeous movie. One of the best I ever seen!
I saw Barbie, Oppenheimer, even Spider Verse. Loved them all. PAST LIVES is the best movie of 2023 and it isn't even close.
A beautiful masterpiece. I just adored this film.
One thing that I now remember after coming home from the movie is that the sister never gets mentioned again.
I forgot about the sister.
Beautiful review. The nails were hit and the point was made, great job!
gurl.. where ya been.. missed you...
Movie shows how ladies can be so very practical… and guys can be such emotional fools! 😢
I cannot find anywhere to watch it in UK. Saw an advert on tube and can’t find, someone help?
Here’s something interesting, Celine Song is the sister of my brother’s NYU professor when he was there a few years back. She’s a game designer. Their father was also a filmmaker, who made a movie with Choi-Minh Sik years before OLDBOY became popular!
Celine Song’s real husband, Justin Kuritzkes, wrote the screenplay for Zendaya’s upcoming film, “CHALLENGERS.” And what happens in it?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
There’s a 3some with Zendaya and 2 guys!!!!!!!!! Makes you wonder what REALLY happened after “PAST LIVES” 🤣🤣🤣🤣😈
Oh my 😯😯 LOL
The most beautiful movie I’ve seen this year. Better than Maestro, KOTFM, Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Moral of the story: If you think they are the one. It’s ok to take a leap of faith and go for it. Don’t be a Hae Sung and let your circumstances hinder you.
There was a similar Marathi film years ago called "Ti Sadhya Kay Karte" ..leaves same impact same feeling
I was looking for your review of Asteroid City, this will do for now 😂
Worst movie ever
I wasn't impressed, unfortunately.
@@ImpressionBlend Asteroid City is a disaster of a movie...

The trailer for this film made me feel like I was watching the Quiet Girl again, my favorite of 2023 so far
Very different movie, but I can totally see what you mean based on the trailer.
Hola.. alguien recomienda algún sitio dónde verla?
Hi Mariana!
hello ))
Yeah...it quietly crushes you
Coincidentally saw the trailer last night, sold on the studio - A24 - as much as the story
A24 just keeps on delivering!
Great movie ❤
Then you should all immediately watch a south indian (Tamil) movie called '96'. It's a beautiful movie about love which never reunites...
MUST WATCH
I like the humor, the dialogues, the flavors from the 90s, I like the shots, but nope, it has better and worse moments and overall it is merely good. You should watch the Ukrainian "Pamfir", a real firecracker.
Its a great little movie but I feel like simple little movies like this belong in a different category than big complex elaborate productions. Otherwise its like, wow look at this stylish bespoke bicycle vs a Ferrari.
I love this movie.
Cant wait to watch this, sounds like it's going to destroy me in the best way possible
it's definitely going to ))
It did me
finally 🎉🎉
this movie reminds me of Casablanca. It's really interesting
NGL, Greta Lee is *super* cute. Oh, and Dune Part II is still not out 😢
Music in the bgm is good in the video
We're In-yun.
Yeah, I been maing to see this.
From the movie title only, sounds like a supernatural movie to me
Haha I thought that too before I saw the trailer. It's not supernatural.
