@@ImpressionBlend Always, Marianna! I love your reviews/comments/reactions. So far, I haven't run across any I disagree with. You've also brought attention to numerous gems I might have missed otherwise.
You're particularly fun while reacting to the Oscars. The range of emotions in your expressions are adorable and priceless.
On a strictly visceral level, the timbre of your voice resonates for me. You could probably make a brilliant living in voiceovers and audio books. I have put on old long-form videos of yours (which I've already watched) as a pleasant alternative to music for falling asleep.
      Thanks for all of it!

I love "The Invisible Man" and Claude Rains' booming voice really creates a sense of danger. I also love "The Bride of Frankenstein" with Ernest Thesiger as the mad scientist and, of course, Karloff as the monster. I have a love for werewolves so i did like "The Wolfman" (1941) with all the atmosphere , fog and great performances by Claude Rains as the father of the wolfman and Maria Ouspenskaya as the kind sympathetic Roma woman whose own son was afflicted with the werewolf curse. I can't recommend "Frankenstein Meets rhe Wolf man" except for the climax. The Frankenstein monster ( not Karloff) is supercharged but the Wolfman just relentlessy keeps coming at him until outside forces intervene for both of them. The Roma woman returns and i love her compassion for the werewolf. Many Universal movies have a sentimental attraction for me as i viewed them as a child so i don't really recommend too many of them. Still i love so many of them.

Loved that Wrap ups are back, can't be more happy about it. But i think that if these videos were divided in talking about like 10 movies at a time, it would be more engaging. 2,3 videos would provide more content with more engagement. Just my humble opinion. Still can't be more excited about the return of this series. Much love❤

If you haven't seen it I'd highly recommend Little Miss Sunshine (same directors as Ruby Sparks and also starring Paul Dano but as a baby). It's my favorite movie lol. It's also just a delightful dark comedy that somehow leaves you feeling happy and features a terrific ensemble (Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano, Greg Kinnear, and two members of Breaking Bad therefore it's a prequel to Breaking Bad)

In terms of Universal Horror from the 30's, Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein should be watched together as Bride starts right after the original ends... plus is even better than the first and has more humor. The Spanish version of Dracula (also from 1931) was filmed on the same sets as the Browning film and in some ways is actually better than the Browning film.

Loved this wrap up. After reading what a train wreck the final episode of "The Curse" was I gleefully watched it without seeing the first nine episodes and to my surprise found the ending kinda great starting at the 28 minute mark. Maybe I'm crazy but I dare you to watch last 30 minutes. All the best Marianna.

I read The Ruins last year and it was absolutely dreadful, but it was one of my favorite books of 2023! I watched the movie after & while I was annoyed by certain changes, overall was a pretty good horror film. I don’t do body horror well either but it was just so creative.

Nice to see monthly wrap ups are back. Also I like that you don't put ley something being poorly received get in the way of finding hidden gems, I feel like people let other ratings filter what they watch too much and sure I understand people don't want to have their time wasted by watching/reading/playing/listening/etc to something they don't like but I personally feel that mindset can prevent finding some really good stories if not all time favorites

This is so great, Marianna. Have really missed these wrap up shows. Did watch all ten episodes of 'The Curse.' Found it engrossing, but I can understand your criticism. Was never a huge Emma Stone fan until I saw her in 'La La Land.' Now, I will watch anything with her in it. But getting back to 'The Curse', I thought it had a very much reality show feel to it. Which is the effect I think the show's creators were trying to achieve.
Other than that, I found the locales and setting of the program to be very interesting. We do not see very many series or movies set in Española, New Mexico. Without divulging anything, the last episode (#10) had one of the strangest final half hour sequences I have ever seen. Apparently, they are going to have a season two. I will watch it because of not only Emma Stone, but also the sheer unpredictability of the plot, which I think is probably the series greatest strength.

Oh Pontypool, that brings back some college memories. Also love Twister, which has the best end credits music ever, Respect the Wind, love it!
Somehow got a lot in this month:
Rewatched Dungeons and Dragons with the family, it's still just as funny as it was the first time.
Also did a Christopher Nolan triple bill over the first week, Memento, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer, these were for influential purposes for my writing, the latter two I mostly watched for the sensory elements, obviously the sound design is fantastic, but Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography is stunningly immersive.
Spree, interesting premise, even if the kills and scares feel a bit too "been there, done that."
Got the Criterion Blu-Ray of Roma, loved it, definitely a personal and intimate film for Alfonso Cuaron, made me want to look up things like the Corpus Christi massacre and how appalling that was.
Scorsese's Silence, wanted to watch it before KOTFM, but I really liked its take on the complexity of the missionary cause, warts and all with Andrew Garfield giving a fantastic performance.
12 Angry Men rewatch, still my favourite movie of all time.
Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, not my favourite of his movies, but still captivating and suspenseful, playing to his strengths.
But I'm a Cheerleader..., a good film for the most part, but I can definitely see how real-life might feel even more absurd for some.
The Handmaiden, had me guessing from beginning to end.
2020s indie catch-up with The Worst Person in the World and Aftersun, because I enjoy giving myself a quarter-life crisis apparently.
Pig, my new favourite movie of 2021, absolutely loved it.
Goodfellas rewatch, never get tired of it.
No One Will Save You, not a bad sci-fi horror with Kaitlyn Dever carrying most of the film through her vulnerable perfornance.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, very cute with my kind of atmosphere and tone.
Couple of threequels I just got round to, The Godfather Part III, not as bad as its reputation suggests, but definitely fell short of its potential, and Army of Darkness, I can definitely say that this and Evil Dead II are good come-down if you found an intense horror film a bit much, because sometimes you just have to admit it's a bit silly.
The Boy and the Heron, absolutely loved it.
Did a Yorgos Lanthimos catch-up with a rewatch of The Favourite, and then Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of the Sacred Deer, just... WHOA! Anyone who says The Favourite and Poor Things is too weird for them ain't seen nothing.
Speaking of Poor Things, it came to my local. Not much to add that hasn't already been said, definitely my favourite Lanthimos film, but when I went, there was a fair number of people there whom I know go to church. Expected a lot of walkouts, but they thought it was bloody hilarious!
I also reread The Wind in the Willows, mostly to take notes for a potential adaptation.
Oh yeah, and I did work, writing, and real-life stuff too.

Enjoyable summary, thanks. If IB is serious about watching more Universal Classics, then I agree with the posters who recommended The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and Son of Frankenstein - although you might wish that Karloff finishes off the annoying child actor in the latter. You can also have fun seeing how many of the scenes are so closely and affectionately parodied in Young Frankenstein. I would add to this list Karloff's The Mummy and The Old Dark House.
In a similar vein Creature from the Black Lagoon is great fun, and I'm sure it was a huge influence on Jaws, including the iconic shark theme music.
I would strongly recommend pushing the boat out a little bit further and watch some of Lon Chaney's classic silent movies. As well as the more well known Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, I would also add The Unknown, He Who Gets Slapped, and Laugh, Clown, Laugh.
Finally, there is a recently restored version of The Man Who Laughs with Conrad Veidt, which is just marvellous.

Greetings from Tbilisi Marianna. I have indeed watched every Universal film multiple times. Here are my recommendations for you, taking your tastes into consideration.
    Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein
Invisible man (The sequels won't interest you)
The Mummy (This is pure Symbolist mood, Karloff is great here.), The Mummy's Hand is the best sequel with the archetypal shambling Mummy
Dracula, Dracula's Daughter (quite unusual, watch it)
The Wolfman. All the monster rally sequels can be taken with massive grains of salt but oddly Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is the real deal.
Related films on other companies. OLD DARK HOUSE! James Whale and Boris Karloff!! This could be the best of all.
White Zombie is a real oddity. And The Island of Doctor Moreau is another hall of fame classic. Never topped since then.
The pre-Kong (same directors) pre-code 1932 The Most Dangerous Game is strangely chilling.
And the absolute darkest corners of the 1930s horror Tod Browning's Freaks. I totally recommend this. You will never forget it. And everything by Tod Browning is worth watching. Especially his silent Lon Chaney stuff. I've watch most of the silent horror films... so if you need the scoop there just put the word out.
    A
nd then there are about four Val Lewton films in the 40s you MUST watch. Cat People, Curse of the Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie, The Seventh Victim, The Body Snatcher. If you haven't seen these I know that these will become your favorites of all of these. (Russian influence here.)
So enjoy... Marianna. Lots of dark eeriness awaits you.

I really liked Overlord, Colour Out Of Space and Nimona. I just saw Godzilla Minus One Minus Color which made this film seem more historical and horror filled. This is the first movie I have seen twice in the theatre since Ed Wood. I think I like the B&W better than the color which the exception of the power up scene in Ginza before he let's his breathe go (wish the could have done a "Sin City" thing there with the color splashes). The Visual Effects nomination at the Academy Awards is well deserved aand I wish it would have been nominated for sound and possibly score. See it in B&W if able, you'll appreciate it. The Invisible Man is the second best Universal film after Bride of Frankenstein, though my favorite early horror film is "Freaks" by Browning (who also did Dracula).

Code 8 and Ruby Sparks sounds good, added to my list!
I spend January mostly catching up on 2023 films:
The Marvels 5/10 - I had a few laughs, the action is fun, but it didn't do anything new.
Napoleon 4/10 - I wanted to watch a film about Napoleon, but this wasn't it. Beautiful actions scenes, though.
The Five Devils 5/10 - I really liked the premise, but the end result was a bit messy.
Brother 4/10 - It didn't feel like there was any real character development, despite it being the focus of the film.
Wonka 6/10 - I don't like musicals, but underneath the cheesy songs there's a really good film, especially for kids.
The Killer 6/10 - Part of me I love what this movie is, but a hollow lead character - despite a love interest - drags it down.
Jules 5/10 - A funny, quirky Sunday afternoon film, that I wanted a little more emotion and a little less humor from.
I Like Movies 5/10 - This movie doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy or a drama, so it gets stuck in-between. Still worth a watch.
May December 3/10 - This one just wasn't for me. The characters were too dumb and it felt kinda awkward.
    Series:
Blue Eye Samurai 10/10 - Great characters, great story, great animation, great action, I can't wait for season 2!
Percy Jackson and The Olympians 3/10 - The story was boring, the lead actor has the emotional range of a wooden plank, and every time an action scene is set up it's over in 2 seconds.

I'm a fan of the first The Strangers movie, never watched the sequel, nor am I excited for the new trilogy of standalone sequel films. The Color ot of Space is a 7.5 for me due to Nic Cage going too far with his craziness.

I’m not as high on D&D as most people. I liked it, but it just didn’t wow me; and I’m not talking WORLD OF WARCRAFT!
I had to go back to my Letterboxd to find out what I thought about RUBY SPARKS as it was a long time ago when I watched it. Reading it over, I found I liked it, but I did have a few problems with it. I like Dano and Kazan’s chemistry, and Kazan’s writing; wondering why she hadn’t made another movie since. What I didn’t like though was the beginning and end of the movie, mostly because I find Dano’s character inconsistent in these parts. I also don’t know why they got Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas to play Dano’s parents for scenes that I felt did not add enough to the movie. Overall I gave it a solid three stars but might be worth a rewatch just to see if my opinion has changed.
In terms of what I have watched in January, I didn’t watch much (for me) because there just wasn’t much new this month, but of the movies I did watch. I'm not going to go through all of them, but I enjoyed AMERICAN FICTION; the first film I saw this year. Jeffery Wight is finally getting the recognition he deserves for with this film. He is hilarious when he is playing his fictionalized writer character of the most stereotypical book of all time that becomes his best seller. The one part of the story that didn’t work for me was the family stuff, but I almost feel like that was the point. Like, if this storyline was in a White centric film, this would just come off as the typical waspy family living in a beach community that we wouldn’t bat an eye regarding. Because I couldn’t be sure, that brought the film down to a 3.5 out of 5.
I also watched THE ZONE OF INTEREST. It’s such an interesting film about how people can turn their back on horrific crimes, even if they are happening right next door. It’s one of the most daring films of 2023, specifically with how it ends. Sandra Huller is fantastic in this movie; specifically with how she views the house her character and Rudolph Hess are living in next to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp as the ideal paradise. A really daring film by director Jonathan Glazer; four stars out of five.
One that really surprised me last month was I.S.S, a film about American and Russian astronauts on the International Space Station as war breaks out between the US and Russia; with both sides given orders to take over the I.S.S by any means necessary. The movie does a really good job at building the tension. I was so nervous and my heart beats quickened as I was watching. There are some detracting parts of the movie like the acting, which was a little subpar, and the outside space effects are not as good as inside the Station, but overall this was a surprising movie that I think people are sleeping on; four stars out of five.

I actually loved The Strangers (2008) and I enjoyed Prey At Night enough (not as much as the 1st one)! But I happen to like home-invasion horror movies in general anyway. However, I don't see a need for another sequel and definitely NOT 3 more at that! Gotta be basic cash-grab bait since both movies were cheap to make & both were profitable at the box office.

Silent Hill has a cult following (including myself) because of the videogame that is based on. They actually nailed perfectly the world, the atmosphere, Pyramid Head, Alessa (bosses in the game). Even the camera shots reminds of how the game is directed. But as you said, the character aspect..... was another case of dismissal of the adult theme of the characters and their trauma, because is a video game, so it isn't suppose to be deep. Same goes for the american Ghost in the Shell. It's a cartoon so......is not deep. The visual is perfect, but they can't go full psychological like thr Japanese can and fail in what it makes it great. And the story of Silent Hill 1 and 2, is regarding one of the best psychogical stories in gaming for a reason.

The Strangers is the most boring thing ever, it's a "dark" horror movie for people who don't watch dark or horror movies. It has one great line in trailer - because you were home - and fails to live up to it every step of the way. But the movie that does send that "just because" message and it does it through the choices that those characters are constantly making is Funny Games, phenomenal movie, highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

You should check out The book the troop by Nick Cutter he’s a Canadian horror Author and the best way I could describe the book is it’s a mix between Michael Crichton and Stephen King . It’s about a scout troop, and their scoutmaster, Who decide to explore a local deserted island, but The encounter more than a bargain for. If you can listen to the audiobook, the narration is phenomenal
