- First we shoot the Detroit side, then over the bridge to the Windsor side. A roadrailer flashes by after a CN auto-rack train at dusk. More Santa Fe GP-60M's being delivered by CP, and the last shot is the NS barge taking "excess height" cars across the river. Since then they have enlarged the tunnel to handle these cars and the barge traffic has come to an end.

Ah, the good old days when you could videotape public structures without being called a terrorist.
So much has changed since this video was filmed. Now you would get shot if you got that close to the tunnel in the beginning.
The zero clearance between the locomotives and cars next to the walkway platforms just makes me weak at the knees. Hope no one was ever foolish enough to explore those tunnels at track level. Great video BTW.
A Middle Eastern woman and her kids were killed quite a few years ago. They were attempting to illegally cross the border.
We used to go in there as kids, there are cross passages to get to the other tube if a train is coming.
I’ve been through that tunnel a few times when the engineer shut off the lights about halfway through one time pitch black! I always expected to see giant rats down there but never did...

ConrailJon That's because these GP60B'S like their brothers the GP60M'S were being delivered FRESH from their birthplace at the General Moters EMD assembly shops in London, ONT.
Interesting at 0:21-0:22 minute mark, the video catches a truck with the word HOVER, a Defunct 90's Trucking Company out of Indiana

Cool upload. I used to work for the Tunnel Company (the automobile tunnel)in about 1975. It was a pretty 'odd' job. I'd walk down to the international border (a line of black tiles) and talk to my Canadien counterparts.

There were some poor bastards that got caught in that tunnel when a train went through. I can't imagine what it must be like to be staring at an oncoming freight train with nowhere to go. Nice vid.

Was cool seeing all those new Dodge Caravans at 4:30 leaving Windsor Assembly. I remember seeing trains carrying new cars often but I never see that anymore.
We used to get into those car trains over on the Detroit side back in the 80's.

I remember when I first moved to Windsor in 1997 I always use to catch & watch the trains coming & going into the Windsor/Detroit tunnel. I'm from a small town called St.Marys which is in-between London,Ontario & Stratford,Ontario & I use to watch the CN Snowplows back when I was a kid/teenager & early adult. I have many hours of CN Snowplow tape footage of these CN Snowplows as well as the old steam engine Snowplows on tape that my GrandFather gave to me. There isn't much action in the Essex c

Neat video! A lot of cool old engines and graffiti free cars and walls. That really was a tight fit for those trains in the tunnels. I bet there was quite a breeze blowing out of those bores before the trains came out.

Have all kinds of questions. As they are going into that tunnel is that like a 3 percent downhill grade? Do both tunnels work or it just one? If this a double track mainline, they are they on the left side? Do Canadian train run on the left, too?
He grade is a 7 degree downhill grade.
Only one line of the track is used the tracks were apart of the CASO subdivision as seen at 4:45 they have since been removed and now only CP uses the tunnel off there Windsor subdivision
Years ago there was a plan proposed to pave the side that is no longer used and allow trucks through there to eliminate the traffic on the Ambassador Bridge. I believe the owner of the bridge sued and won to stop the project. He tried to sue to stop the new Gordie Howe bridge but failed in that lawsuit.
Ridiculous plan, what if a truck caught fire in there? They enlarged one side so trains could carry hundreds of CONEX containers at a time through it.

I believe they enlarged the tunnel moutha to allow larger trains to use it later on.

The Canadian National Railway has a new Post-1992 tunnel for the 'Excess Height' freight cars.
never saw the detroit side I worked at the windsor end they only use the 1 track now due to the autoracks
They don't build those tunnels any bigger than they have to be! God help anyone in there when a train comes.

It is indeed although this scene has changed ALOT since this was filmed. The track on the left isn't used anymore (the one that none of the trains in the video were using already), there are security cameras up and down the ROW and all of that vegetation has been cut down. Also CN no longer uses this tunnel. I suggest you watch the video on CZcams about the 1990's tunnel enlargement project and it'll explain why CN no longer uses it even though CP still runs 20-30 trains a day through it.
Both sides are being used. I saw trains enter/leave on both tracks last night.

The security measures have been greatly upgraded since then. You can't get close enough to even see the tunnel on the Detroit side anymore.

I watched the CP Holiday Train last night from the Bagley bridge. You can see the tunnel entrance quite clearly.

They can now. The tunnel was retro-fitted in 94 to allow the taller cares to run through it
Recent events will make this route effectively abandoned.

Back when I was a kid I use to watch the train go in the tunnel. Then in my early 20's I herd of these idiot kids who actually walked through it and the cops and train cops were waiting at the other end for them. lol. Idiots! If you do that then it holds up business because they have to stop all trains till they fix there problem. And when I was kid I went in there for something to do, tunnel. and found a shovel that I threw down into the snow that had fell a few days ago then along came this truck to tracks along with some guys in it grabbing it and yelling F/N Kid! I must had dropped the shovel by this sensor just by the entrance that turned on there tracker and they came to investigate but by then I was watching ducked down on the black bridge snickering from my 15 yr old face. lol. I wasn't a bad kid just choosy at the things I did back then.

Don't bother wasting your time shooting in essex county, most of the trackage is gone.
Diesel was invented by a socialist...an energy source for the people, cheaper, albeit not as efficient as Petra’s or gas depending on which side of the pond you’re on. German fella. Socialist have a great history of inventions that turn out to be ‘problematic. The last Labour (left) government in the U.K. encouraged strongly buying diesel fuelled cars. Wonder if electric cars are gonna end up the same way.
