Train Inside Hoosac Tunnel

  • A rather boring video from inside the Hoosac tunnel while a train passes. The audio becomes distorted as the train approaches because of rapid pressure change and simply because the train is very loud.
This is not a good place to be and I do not recommend trespassing in the tunnel. Trespassing is illegal and is more dangerous than using Kanye West as a role model. Enjoy. Or don't.

I think we were about 1.5 miles in from the east end. We intended to go half way in but were unnerved by what appeared to be a headlamp approaching us from about 100 yards ahead. Thinking it was another explorer I called out a greeting once we were within earshot. At that point the light stopped moving and slowly dimmed out until disappearing completely leaving us entirely bewildered. We decided then it was time to turnaround. Within five minutes a strong gust blew through the tunnel followed shortly thereafter by a low rumble, indicating that a train must be bearing down on us. Perhaps the light we saw was simply the train's headlight reflecting off the tunnel ceiling. Whatever the case, we found a safe place to hunker down while it passed and followed it out the way we came in. The exhaust was awful and made it tough to breathe. It's a good thing none of us had weak hearts or a pulmonary condition. We were all eager to get out of there quickly.

There are niches all along the north face, every 300 feet (excluding the first 500-1000 feet from each portal. (There was even a blasted out corridor somewhere within the center, going north, leading to some door containing a frosted glass window, and locked. Behind the glass window the "blasted out room" was even lit inside back then! Couldn't see through the frosted glass.)
