Kayakers vs Whirlpools!

  • As the Ottawa river begins to rise the eddylines start to get way more powerful and at the top of the Butchers Knife rapid, some really powerful whirlpools begin to form! We had an awesome day with a really good crew, Dane had an insane ride that was honestly a little bit scary to watch!

I made the mistake in my youth, along with a few friends, by jumping into that similar whirlpool without a kayak. It took me to the bottom of the river and I ended up about 100 yards down stream. Its a good thing I had strong lungs at the time from years of paddling. Never did that again without a boat!

When I used to kayak there a few crazy ass kayakers would get out of their boats, grab rocks and jump in to the whirl pools holding the rocks. Of course they came up 20-30 seconds later looking quite green way way down river.
