For me. this is Kate's masterpiece, and having followed her career from Wuthering Heights onwards, this felt like a natural progression at the time, with her taking increasing control of production and exploring further the new technology and electronic sounds which made their first appearance on her previous album. It was the sound of the times, but the bravery of Kate's writing and her willingness to explore extremes elevated this album. It wasn't a huge commercial success, but I think it still reached number one in the UK charts. Favourite tracks are: Get Out of my House, Leave it Open and Night of the Swallow, but the album works so well as a whole I don't think it has a weak moment.
Regarding UK album charts it got to number 3, which was the highest chart position of all the countries it was released in.

The greatest album of all time! Glad it's your favorite from her too! Can you believe this album just turned 40 a few months ago? She was such a pioneer. My favorite song is Night of the Swallow! Wonderful reaction as always. Your reaction to her screaming in Houdini was priceless, she said she made her voice sound like that by drinking a lot of milk and eating a lot of chocolate! I would've loved to see your reaction to the donkey noises though🤣
The Dreaming was my introduction to Kate Bush. I have been in love with her and her music ever since. Yes, I do have her previous studio releases!!!
It's always a joy to revisit THE DREAMING. It really is a sonic tour de force and still sounds as fresh and original as when I first heard it over three decades ago.
Kate Bush is quite literally the best thing since sliced bread. Utter genius

Kate has a lot of deeper meanings on all songs, I’ve learned some of the biggest life lessons from her. Also she produced it all herself
I can't believe I missed this video! I'm so glad you did a reaction to my favorite album of all time. I love how dense, bizarre, and intricate the production is on the record. It also is for me Kate's vocal peak - doing things with her voice she's never done before and pushing it to harsh limits. Just an incredible album and it changed my life years ago.

Yes, finally! I've been waiting for your reaction to this! The recording was apparently quite difficult, with many studios and a sceptical record company and the reception was mixed, but today lots of people praise this album. I love it too!! "Especially "Get Out of My House", inspired by The Shining and sampling slamming doors. Who else would impersonate a mule?
So glad that you jumped into tbe cauldron that is The Dreaming, It is easily my favorite of her catalogue but lately The Sensual World has been drawing me in for some reason. I have a special love for Aerial as well... i actually wept like a school girl when I first heard that album, maybe becsuse of the 10 or 12 year gap before it, and then out comes a double album linked by a beautiful conceptual thread that takes you from the sea into the sky', from the dawn to the dusk to the dawn, then the sun explodes and you are left in pieces!
First time watching your channel.. i should say "your work" because i truly feel you are so very brilliant in your reactions and that you are a BORN SCHOLAR my friend.. I also love how you don't add any black or white divisions in your reactions.. you're just being your true self no labels. IMO it won't be long until you'll be known globally as a GREAT music reviewer, critic, journalist or whatever you'd like to be. This is my favourite Kate Bush album and I was listening to it, when the notification of your reaction to it popped up, so I had to see what you thought of it, so thank you for a great reaction to the album.
EMI, weren't very happy when Kate completed and presented this album (the 1st time that she had produced herself as "Never For Ever" Kate was a co-producer) to them, their opinion was that it was a noncommercial album and took quite a bit of studio time (at four including the iconic Abbey Road - which Kate has used often) which EMI was paying for.
Indeed EMI came very close to rejecting the album outright, which they could have done under the contract, thankfully wiser heads prevailed, since Kate would never agree to re-write.
In relation to this album EMI did make some a very strange decision when releasing the first single "Sat In Your Lap" over a year before the actual release of the album.
So, I don't just how fully committed EMI were when it come to the marketing of the album.
Regarding your comment about how much time it would take you to recover from listening to Houdini, did you have a similar time period in mind when it came to "Get Out Of My House" ? 😀
Here's one of Kate's comments about the song (taken from the Kate Bush Encyclopedia):
"The Shining' is the only book I've read that has frightened me. While reading it I swamped around in its snowy imagery and avoided visiting certain floors of the big, cold hotel, empty for the winter. As in 'Alien', the central characters are isolated, miles (or light years) away from anyone or anything, but there is something in the place with them. They're not sure what, but it isn't very nice.
The setting for this song continues the theme - the house which is really a human being, has been shut up - locked and bolted, to stop any outside forces from entering. The person has been hurt and has decided to keep everybody out. They plant a 'concierge' at the front door to stop any determined callers from passing, but the thing has got into the house upstairs. It's descending in the lift, and now it approaches the door of the room that you're hiding in. You're cornered, there's no way out, so you turn into a bird and fly away, but the thing changes shape, too. You change, it changes; you can't escape, so you turn around and face it, scare it away. (Kate Bush Club newsletter, October 1982)"
Critical reaction to the album initially was (at best) mixed, thankfully recently it has undergone a significant critical reevaluation as a milestone piece of work.
Certainly, I feel that if "The Dreaming" was never created, then we would have never got the iconic album that followed it "Hounds Of Love".
It was Kate's experiences when creating the album that led her to create a professional recording studio at her parents home, were she could work in a pressure free environment and EMI couldn't complain anymore about studio costs, because they weren't paying for studio time.
"The Dreaming" is certainly an album that I wouldn't recommend to any new Kate Bush fans to listen to straight away, they need to "work up" to it. I suggest if anyone wants to do a deep dive in Kate's discography that they should approach things in chronological order, so they she how Kate developed as an artist.
"The Kick Inside" is a fantastic debut album for someone who was so young at the time.
"Never For Ever" is another hilight of mine, the first album were Kate starts to spread her musical wings, a distinct change from the previous two. It's also the first album where the Fairlight CMI makes an appearance, after Kate has been exposed to it, when working with Peter Gabriel.

I think context is everything, and if you followed Kate album by album from the beginning then this seemed like the next step, but if you come to it cold, or from a selection of hits, it might seem even more jarring than it felt at the time. As strong an album as Hounds of Love is, I still feel emotionally more connected to this album and Never For Ever, which I suppose reflects the fact that I was just more open to fresh influences at that time.
I continue to enjoy your excellent reactions of older music and I agree with others that this is Kate's absolute best. So glad you completely got it. All the best my friend.

The Dreaming is my favorite album of Kate. Suspended in gaffa and night of the swallow are great! Maybe u can check Yuri Kono in yt, she do covers album by album, and now she in the The Dreaming trip. THX!
Awww, so great that you loved this album the most. I do too!!! I first heard this in High School and became absolutely and entirely obsessed. I’ve had other band obsessions, but none of them quite hold up the way Kate Bush does. She’s just the real deal creatively. So authentic.

Great reaction to my favourite complete KB album (for me, tying with The Ninth Wave). Opinion is split on what are Kate’s ‘holy trinity’ of albums - either HoL and The Dreaming preceded by Never Forever, or followed by The Sensual World (her ‘feminine album’). You can’t really go wrong with whichever of the last two you do next.

Great review of a great album. I bought this when it was released and apart from a few tracks I didn't get it. Kate was way ahead of me. Years later, it became a favourite - I was finally ready to appreciate its brilliance
At the end of leave it open when she sings "we let the weirdness in" she sang it, played it backwards, and sang what it sounded like backwards, and then reversed it

I think the donkey/mule/jackass sounds were inspired by events in Pinocchio where a boy was transformed into a donkey. It was a surreal, disturbing scene which left quite an impression on those of us who watched it when we were kids.

At about the same time, another woman wrote the dark (or is it light?) counterpart to the Dreaming. It's Nina Hagen's Nunsexmonkrock.
Some people will just say it's evil. In case you decide to try it, let me open up a different door to that album.
Most of the subjects are deeply spiritual (christian, buddhist and hindu references) and can't be interpreted as evil to start with.
It's her delivery that is often perceived as evil. I really disagree because for me it's the wrath of angels, the ecstasy of blinding light.
Give it a try. Vocally she will blow your mind.

So glad you finally got to The Dreaming! It's my favorite KB album -- yes, HoL is probably more a "controlled masterpiece," but The Dreaming is where Kate really throws herself in all directions (her voice, her compositions, her production, her writing) and she "let the weirdness in." And "Suspended in Gaffa" is my absolute favorite song of all time, all artists, all KB songs.
