An excellent commentary Josh. I have had both and have to agree 100 percent. If you are having short trips with lots of dry camping the motorhome is a party on wheels. The trailer is much better for extended stays at parks. The convenience the biggest factor for me now. The maintenance and cost of operation the truck and trailer is cheaper plus the pick up can also tow the boat for summer and snowmobiles for winters. A single tow vehicle for a multitude of applications and it works quite well for the day to day use.

These are very good points, I agree and happen to think a travel trailer is the most versatile in many things, especially when it comes to cost......but there's another factor in having a motorhome that tends to be overlooked or unseen. Long story short, it saves wear and tear on your tow vehicle (which might not even be rated to tow what you have in the first place) and keeps the miles off of it as well, which eventually leads to more depreciation. It's not a cost you might notice, but it is definitely there in the end, and you definitely would notice it right away if your vehicle has to undergo unexpected repair costs. To me that's a huge benefit of saving your tow vehicles. Also, a motorhome is designed to accommodate it's own weight, whereas some tow vehicles which are put in front of oversized RVs, aren't really designed for that weight. My rule of thumb is....find out what your vehicle's max tow rating is and reduce it by half, and then reduce that half by another half again, if you're doing mountain towing. Some people tow vehicles behind motorhomes though, which completely defeats the purpose in my opinion. You now subject your motorhome to more stress, not to mention even worse fuel economy. It's bad enough already by itself. You might as well just pull a trailer, as the total length of your units will be probably just as long. I bought an old motorhome and I really like it, but I underestimated how much fuel it used, almost to the point where I wish I would have got a small trailer. Pulling my 5200 pound trailer, combined with the 5400 pound truck, gives me 10800 pounds. I can get 12 to 14 mpg with that unit, while the class c at 8500 pounds by itself can only barely touch 8 to 9 mpg. Just some information to think about. My motorhome is a 1984, and I'm sure the newer ones can do quite a bit better than 8 mpg.

    Hello Josh
Like so many newbies I've been watching video after video trying to narrow down my choice. Your video was so helpful and mad sense! I was 60/40 between a 5th wheel vs a Class C for my first RV. The 5th is definitely a good plan for me... thanks so much for helping me make a sound decision😄

Josh, thanks for the video. We now have a 19 Winnebago class C that we're selling to buy a class A for more space. If a person has a decent truck to begin with, a small trailer is the cheapest way to start rving. Many people own trucks that they use like a regular car so this might be the way to go. For me I don't like to tow because it does not seem as safe as a motorhome, and I don't have a truck. To me the best thing about towing a trailer like you said is that you can get around once you set-up camp, unless you tow with a motorhome a very small vehicle. I drove transit buses for 27 years so I'm very comfortable with a motorhome and having everyone on board which can use the toilet or get a drink or make a sandwich is an added plus. Here in California when towing "anything", the speed limit is 55 mph which of course no one follows. I keep my motorhome at 60 mph since faster sucks more gas and now here in CA gas has gone over $4.00 per gallon. Thanks again.

Thanks so much. Newbie here, however I have towed trailers in the past... a really small one and a really large one ( fifth wheel) but that all happened many years ago. Still, I have gone back and forth again on the subject since I am about to go full time. You helped me make my final decision. I am going to go with a 21 foot towable to start with a 3/4 ton diesal 4x4 truck. Then, if I want to go with a little larger trailer I will be in good shape. I am not interested in a 5th again I just don't want to go that large. Anyway, thank you so much. Glad to get my sleep back instead of tossing and turning trying to make a decision.

One thing to add for motorhome vs trailer that if you are alone motorhome is better for you because you cant leave your trailer unwatched more over motorhome all one set and accommodate all requirements in trailer you have to set generator and other stuff attched to it like fuel take and so on, after all thanks for the video

Towable RV is my favorite, because (as you mentioned) of the engine!
If you have a breakdown, you'd have to go to a hotel for your camping trip, while your RV is being worked on! That sucks!
Towable RV, doesn't have an engine (to blow a head gasket, for example)! You can enjoy your trip without all the motor maintenance on your mind!
EDIT: just saw this was from 4 yrs ago! Why CZcams put it on the "recommend for you" list, I don't know 🤔

Thank you SO much Josh, you are awesome! I have watched about 12 of your videos over the past 2 days. I have learned more from you in 2 days then over the past 6 months of researching RVs. THANK YOU. And I have officially dropped the B Class for a trailer and truck, WHICH will save me about $30-40000 over a B class. Do you have any specific videos on towing? I have never towed a trailer before, though I have driven a B Class RV, and once upon a time a 40' bob tail truck. Any further of your wonderful knowledge and insights would be greatly appreciated. I would come right over to talk with you but I live in CA. LOL

My thought on this is.... you wouldn't sit on the couch 5 months out of the year and then get up and expect to run an 80 mile marathon flawlessly. In the same fashion, typically your motorhome, or trailer, sits until you have time to use it, what? 5 times a year? So essentially what you are doing is asking someone to sit on the couch always and then get up only 5 times a year and run across the country without breaking down.... good luck with that. Vs. A towable, it does the same amount of sitting and you use it just as often, but you drive the truck to and from work, to the store, and as a day to day vehicle, so its kept more in shape to get up and run across the country flawlessly without a breakdown, all be it with a giant weight on the back of it. Plus... if you take off our of Chicago and head for Denver in your truck and trailer and something happens to the truck, you at worst bought another 40 or 50 thousand dollar truck and still the same trailer vs having to get a whole new $100000 unit.

I am a female that might be traveling solo. I have a small vintage trailer that I am thinking that I will travel part-time until I am comfortable RVing. Then if everything goes as I hope, I will buy and rv for full time. I have been leaning towards a motorhome

I think you make it sound like you're going to be camping in the wastelands next to Mad Max LOL! Hard for me to give you an opinion without knowing how you're going to really use the RV.
When the average person says "boon docking" they're generally referring to some place in the woods away from the park. You sound like you plan to be RV'ing in a place where you could wake up to see a mountain lion outside of your window.
I guess I my thoughts are "Don't go camping where you could have a mountain lion outside of your window in the morning." *laugh*
You can "what if" yourself to death on this.
      * What if you blow a trailer tire? You can at least put a tongue lock on the trailer & get what you need.
      * Are you going to rely on your RV as your sole means of transportation? If NOT boon docking, then are you going to plan on unhooking your entire rig every time you want to zip into town?
      * What if you have a mechanical problem with the RV like a slide out that prevents you from moving?
There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to Motorized vs. Towable. Rather, it's what works for your vision of your investment.

@@JoshtheRVNerd Just saw a weapon that looks like a gun, but is not a gun (almost $500) that someone showed on their channel. It shoots a sort-of pellet. I am going to get one (I do know how to use a gun, but this just seems like a better idea). This way you could even carry it with you, as a lone female, and feel protected. I think it is a great way to solve the security problem. I think if anyone sees it in your hand they are going to take you very seriously and back off. If you must shoot it, they will get a painful hit, but it won't kill them and won't cause an injury that will draw blood, etc. Whish I could remember the name, but with some research, I think you might find it.
