I just know that I used to live in LA and have had many, many times been out with friends when suddenly they will start talking about spotting a celebrity and I _never_ saw the celebrity. Bad luck? Maybe. But I think my brain has problems recognizing a 3-D faces that I've only ever seen in 2-D before.

I think the issue is deeper than an economic model. I mean I wish we had something better than capitalism, but at the end of the day, it’s up to us to decide what we do with algorithms. The alternative is government-controlled algorithms and guess what they will optimize for!
This has been the problem since the 20th century… the only way to motivate people en mass to a significant enough degree to compete with and contain other aggressive nations is to either motivate people with money or motivate them with violence. I think as the economy continues to grow, perhaps there will be room for new forms of government. Perhaps governments will get larger and more centralized or perhaps they will get smaller or perhaps they will stay the same. It’s hard to even say if states will exist in the same way they do now.
My point is that it’s not like getting rid of capitalism will solve the world’s problems. It’s not actually the root of all evil. It has a lot of problems, and it’s bad at some things which is why the market doesn’t control everything and we have the government control them instead. Is this one of those things? Perhaps, or maybe it can be controlled by the market so long as the ad-based economy is replaced with something else like a subscription-based economy. I don’t know, but I just think blaming capitalism for everything is intellectually lazy and not actually representative of reality or acknowledging of history and human psychology.

4:41 The way Hank says "Ooh a sand dollar" really made me imagine that that's just what he calls it when there's a dollar bill in the sand, like a street penny, or pocket sand.
I don't know why, but I get a lot of satisfaction from Hank's post-chemo hair evolution. Different colour, different texture, different hair line. Not better or worse, just different. And every single video - past, present, or future - within 2 seconds I know if this was filmed before or after his experience with cancer.
I think it's because it can be hard to know where anything online is in the timeline. Sure you can check it's posted date, but things get re-uploaded or posted later than planned, or reissued publicly from behind a paywall. Video production quality varies but not always trending towards better. Something from 10 years ago may feel fresh and new and yesterday's news can seem hackneyed and rehashed. It all gets very homogeneous.
But with anything with Hank, there is one thing I know for sure. Pre or post chemo. It's comforting in a strange way.
It is looking less curly already though. Those first locks were tight.

that's why after like a decade and a half of using all the social medias I have fallen back to just going on tumblr. it's chronological by default, it just shows you blogs that you follow, it shows you _all_ of what appears on those blogs… it is what you make it - same as it ever was
I feel like they've started recommending too many things... What view are you using?
Tumblr 100% best social media which I think is part of why it's been so hard for people to monetize it.

Disconnecting from as much social media as possible has honestly been doing wonders for my mental health. I've gotten more peace and joy and healing in my life than ever before. I do dip back in sometimes, but I'm not scrolling constantly like I used to. Worth a try!
I eventually chose to leave Facebook, then years later Twitter, for the same reason; I was spending hours a day deliberately making myself angry and despairing. And that isn’t healthy. And I’m trying to be healthy! 😤

I know!! I could answer yes to all of them, I hate bragging, that's a lie, I love supporting this community in anyway I possibly can!!
For a while now I've been consciously remembering that whenever I click something, or whenever I keep watching something, I'm telling CZcams that I like it. And then it will show me more of that stuff. And so if I don't really like it, if I don't really want to see more like it, then I stop watching, or if I know that's probably the case before I click, I don't click. It's a matter of thinking "Ooh what's that?" and instead of just clicking on it, trying to imagine what it will actually be like and if I'll actually enjoy it.
I think it's been improving my recommendations and enjoyment of this platform, so I'm sharing this tip for you guys to try too.
You can also move the algorithm in a different direction by clicking om the dots next to the title in your feed and choose not interested or do not recommend this channel
I press the dislike button in the first 5 seconda of every video and I wait for it to EARN an undislike, and only life changing vids get a like
Occasionally, I see something and get sucked in by the negativity, then realize I’m seeing more and more videos like that and I don’t want THAT, then deliberately start ignoring them, and they go away! Mostly! They’ll test me occasionally, “Hey, you clicked on this misery ten times that one week three months ago, still sure you don’t want another?”. 😃
It also knows what devices you're using to recommend specific content. I have traveling type CZcams videos recommended on my tv, drama, criminal, music videos recommended on my computer, and random stuff recommended on my phone, but all used under the same account!
@@yeralmuzika Wow, I didn't know this! I have two laptops that I use, and I haven't noticed any differences in what I get recommended on them. My mum also uses my CZcams account on her tablet, and although I don't see the recommendations she gets, she talks about getting recommended stuff that is based on what I watch, and I occasionally get stuff based on what she watches. This has made me curious now to check the recommendations on her tablet and see if they're any different to what I get on my laptops.
Thanks for the honesty in this one, Hank. It's so hard to admit when the messy things we want don't line up with our ideals. But I DO love internet mess sometimes. I keep reading internet drama and falling down rabbit holes for a REASON and it's not going away pretending it's not. Looking forward to the newsletter.

One thing that had a big impact for me was the YT frontpage versus YT subscriptions page: Frontpage is algorithm. Subscriptions page is simply the newest videos from my subscriptions.
That inspired me to identify and label all algorithms that I frequent, and change my bookmarks.
Now I'm reminded by my bookmark every time I click into an algorithm page.
And I try to make non-algorithm pages my standard bookmarks.
I love the subscriptions page of youtube. Highly recommend people switch to it if they haven't yet. Glad it helped you work out a better way to internet!

I've gone so far as to start using startpage as a Google search proxy, thus removing the algorithm from my search results. It has some downsides, but overall I like it so far.

The algorithm has done a great disservice to mutual understanding and accurate information. Instead of reasonable, well sourced claims being shared, the posts that are quick to consume and cause the most emotional impact will be what engages people and "trend" to the top. This is resulting in the rapid spread of misinformation and shaping of opinions on important topics that people should be engaging much more directly with to be forming opinions on and not getting it through scrolling, getting takes from other trapped in that same cycle, spinning their bias...
It's really upsetting the amount of division and extremism it's creating even within a given "side" of a topic or political spectrum. People will fall into a hole that feeds them more and more of the information they believe in, pushing them further and further that way until the point where hearing any counter information then feels like an attack and makes them feel outraged at you for daring even say something else, where they now believe something so whole heartedly that there's no amount of information you could provide that would change their mind because they've been fed a constant stream of emotionally manipulative material that has created an undeniable sense of truth in their mind.
I don't know how we step back from this. But videos like this can definitely help. The more people who discuss it, the more people's minds can hopefully be opened up to take everything with a grain of salt and verify before believing.

It is indeed a thing they have done before. It has been dubbed "The Format" they only break it out every so often but It's always fun when they do. It's usually John and his 30ft microphone cord doing the format.

My first thought when watching videos like this where the location keeps changing but the person narrating makes the transition seem so seamless always makes me appreciate just how much work has to go into making a simple 4 minute video. Being able to maintain your train of thought while moving and setting up your camera several times in multiple different places is just...yeah. it's so impressively not necessary and yet awesome at the same time.

Hi Hank! I have a suggestion (or maybe a request?) for another form of communication.
When I open up my web browser at work, I'm presented with a bunch of stuff that microsoft thinks would be interesting for me to see. Is there any chance that the contents of the newsletter could be wrapped up into website form for me to stick as my homepage? Human curated current events sounds like a great thing. I get distracted a lot, and if I'm gonna be distracted, I'd feel good about DFTBA distracting me in directions that suck less.

Signed up! Recommendation for future newsletter content: the pros and cons of bookshelf organization by color vs. subject/author/title. I'd genuinely like to hear from someone who doesn't get a mild anxiety attack looking those shelves.
It was cool to see your place, so much cool art is the best thing. Your kitchen looks like a showroom kitchen (probably the flowers). It was hard to listen to what you were saying while looking at all the things, though I could hear the pleasantly unusual (for you) cadence. It's a multi-layered piece I must confront several times through. 😊

Okay. I signed up for the newsletter. I found it unsettling and yet at the same time satisfying to have a machine tell me that I have been successfully identified as a human. External validation!

I’ve been really concerned with how much time I spend online, specifically CZcams. I don’t have friends or socialize, watching videos is my way of coping with life. Not really sure why I vented or if anyone feels similar- I feel like I lost control over myself and idk how to undo it.
I don't fully know the way out either, but I just want you to know that you're not alone in using the internet to cope with life. I feel like that a lot of times too.
I started going to Yin Yoga classes recently, and I think that's helping. Even if part of the time my mind is swirling around the twitch stream I was watching or the video game I was playing beforehand, with regular practice I'm gradually getting better at centering myself in myself.
If you have the cash, please look into Better Help. (I know, it's weird to do therapy online, when being online is the problem.) The world is better with you in it. Thanks for still being here.
I think it's okay to enjoy things on the internet, and it's okay to want a little more balance in your life. As for how to get that balance--are there community centers or libraries near you? Often times they have classes and programs that offer a good opportunity to get offline and many of them are focused on interests--like, if you watch a bunch of video game streams, there might be a gaming group you can join, or if you love watching videos about sewing or cosplay, then maybe looking for a sewing class or a cosplay group could be a good option for you!
What has really helped me focus on balance in my internet usage is recognizing that sometimes it's not about telling myself Not to do the Internet, it's about finding something More Engaging to do instead. So rather than "I shouldn't spend so much time online" I've shifted to "I want to spend my time on ... [ice skating, crafting, etc.]"
However you navigate going forward, I know you'll do okay. I'm rooting for you!

The refocusing of the camera on the stranger on the hill who stops to stare, seemingly, straight back at the audience right as Hank says "deepen your relationship and understanding of the world and of the people who you share it with" couldn't have been planned better.
What is the internet, if not random unintentional focusing on strangers?
