  • We've been getting these questions a lot lately: What will a diesel conversion cost, and can you do the diesel swap?
    Why it's $10k:
    - 6BT is ~$2000 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - 4BT is ~$3500 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - Adapter plate, flywheel and starter is ~$2000.
    - Shift controller is ~$600. kit.com/debossgarage/parts-mat...
    - Alignment fluids, fittings, hoses, machining is ~$500.
    - DG shop rate is $65/hr at an estimate of 70 hours.
    - Don't forget shipping + taxes!

But I know I'll never have the resources to accomplish it. But I love these videos and I love watching and learning. Who knows, maybe getting to see how it's done will help me learn down the road and do something cool too.

Funny that I'm watching this considering I'm about to swap a John Deere 4045T into my 2005 F150. It's also getting a G56 manual and axles and suspension from an F350. Transmission and transfer case been freshly rebuilt, motor is brand new and has some extra parts to put some pep in her step, axles also rebuilt. Tearing the truck apart completely and rebuilding everything so every square inch of the truck will be in pristine condition.

    • @OnlyTheEd
      @OnlyTheEd Před 8 lety

Your main areas (probably) will be the electrical connections and the driveshaft changes/modification. (Please note Johnson's Gee-rage and "Todd Booke's Bronco swap).......His has the 4BT and a 5 speed (m5odr2, I think).....Jimmy (Johnson's Gee-rage) has a 1982 F150 4BT with the m5odr2....he's been building it for perhaps 2 years. His cash outlay has topped $6K, because he's had some issues and other modifications/ additions. He has done most of his own build except the driveshaft modification, and had help rebuilding the m5odr2. Otherwise, Rich is your man.....The $$$ I speak of is US, of course....Canadian is a different exchange rate. Oh yeah.....also the engine mounts/pads/whatever are going to cause grief.......And oil pan location, maybe....

Hey rich. I was looking into building a little hauler to transport my vehicle when needed or pull stuff around. My 4.0l jeep grand Cherokee dont cut it. I'm a postal mechanic and fell in love with the Cummins engines since they were very reliable and barely in the shop😁.
So I was considering making a pick up or suv with a 4bta engine. Is that good for a budget build? Or is the 6bt cheaper? Was considering a 90s ram 2500 but they are coming up in price. What body, engine and transmission do you recommend? Whats the easiest option. Im not going to have it as a daily. Just when I need it, something to beat up and ready to use when needed. Hey Mr.Deboss so I Have a 98 K1500 5.7 Vortec Extended Cab 3 door Silverado I recently Purchased it from a older Gentleman who had bought it brand new and had fallen ill and needed the money. The engine and tranny are all original. He had kept it in tip top shape with Transmission Fluid Flushes and Filter changes every 35-40k miles and Oil changes every 2500 Miles Wix and Kn filters were his go too he cleaned it up and sprayed off the snow in the wintertime so there isn’t a single spot of rust on the fenders as most fall victim too aswell as the vehicle does not burn a single drop of oil and has had all the gaskets replaced routinely. My question is I’m looking at doing a 6.5 or 6.2 Detroit Diesel swap or possibly buying a baby duramax crate engine and or just installing a 6.6 or possibly even a 5.9 or smaller cummins engine into it I just would like to get your thoughts on it!

Hey there. Been watching a lot of your videos lately, I agree with lots of your ideias about "doing it yourself" and saving some money, also it's really a shame what they are doing with the diesel.
Have a question for you, do You know the mercedes om606 engines? They remember me of the 5.9 cummins, smaller but also 6 cylinders, some come with the p pump and also have a huuge potential for enourmous hp. I bet you would like it. Would love to ser a project with an om606 engine done by you.
    Regards

Just picked up a 300d with the OM617 in it. I am planning on swapping it into my 1948 Chev convertible but I am enjoying driving it around for now. Right car at the wrong time as the swap won't happen for another year or two

good content, I have a 2004, f250 powerstroke 6.0. it has 350k miles. I did a head gasket at 310k miles and ran great for 40k miles. at the present time it needs another head gasket job. lower end is fine and has great power. I'm thinking of rebuilding the entire engine. I can't find genuine ford pistons and don't want aftermarket pistons. how wise is it to use the same pistons with 350k miles on them? thanks

Unfortunately, these Toyota swaps aren't as plug and play as you would think, especially if it has electronics. I found that the wiring harness for the diesel is for a right hand drive truck, so it has to be rebuilt. Also, the gauges don't transfer either, from what I have found. Look up dieseltoys on forums. You will find pretty much everything you will need from those guys. I haven't done the swap yet, so I all I know is what I have read. I could be wrong though. I do know that you would be better off with a half cut which will have everything you will need.
