- In this episode, we meet up with the Kuntz Bros from Georgia to dyno test their 4bt Cummins repowered Ford Excursion. Things get carried away and a their home-ported 4bt cylinder head ends up on the flow bench. Finally a PDD CNC stage 1 ported head ends up in the Excursion and back on the dyno. Guess the power gains and post your guesses down below in the comments!

Will. Thanks for doing this! For those of you who don't know, I am the daily driver, of this daily driver, and want to give some "real world" feedback on this vehicle. Sam and Seth did a great job building this for me. It's been to New Hampshire with a Uhaul trailer both ways once and multiple trips to PA and does really well on the highway. Always 19-20.5 mpg incl. in the WV mountains. However, this Power Driven Diesel CNC ported head puts this thing over the top.
I see a noticeable difference throughout the rpm range driving this over the past week or so. Spools quicker and easier. EGTs have also dropped across the rpm range. This gave me a useable power increase I can feel. More power with less boost is always good! Just have to keep from getting a ticket now, because being an Excursion, you can cruise at 70 and not even feel it. Sam Kuntz Sr.
Damn I was happy with my 5.4 getting 14mpg on the freeway. 19 to 20 that’s awesome.
Anyway you could list the full build. Drivetrain, dash and gages etc. Not looking for the crazy details just what was used.. I have a 2000 excursion that I've been kicking around a 7.3 swap, 4bt or 6bt. This 4bt will do everything I want and then some
How much do yo spend on the swap?
@@alexvistahermosa Thats what I want to know.
Have you guys ever used a 4 valve head?
That torque number with that horsepower number is INSANE!!!
Seth and Sam are good guys. They helped me get back on the road after my trans heat exchanger blew 1,000 miles from home. They worked way after hours and let me park my truck and camper in their lot over night.
yes they really are!
I am exploring a repower for a old rv I have. Do you guys have the contact info for these guys that built the 4bt. Thanks
108 hp per cylinder. Times 4 cylinders.
434hp 4bt.
108 hp times 6 cylinders.
Makes it 651 hp 6bt. Hypothetically.
Just some perspective.
Wow!! Awesome results.
Wow, 406hp with stock cyl head! That's over 100hp/cyl!
it will be interesting to hear how it performs on the way home...
Outstanding work- more 4BTs please!
I put a '97 12v in place of the V 10 in an '02 Excursion years ago. I left it bone stock so as to save the stock Ford tranny. It wasn't the fastest thing on the road, but at 60 mph on 35s I'd get 22 mpg. That 4bt is an AWESOME powerplant! Nice job, fellas!
I get the 4bt is good but I would have definitely done your swap over a 4bt. Just because of the cost to get less horsepower than you could a 12v.
There’s nothing like a Cummins to make reliable power..
I love content like this....an interesting build and good modifications and in depth information. Keep more of these coming! Lots of fun.
Thanks, will do!
I really enjoy it when you guys do these kind of tests. Great job thanks!!!!!
This was a great episode, really interesting and educational!
That torque number has me flabbergasted. Over 900 ft/lbs at 2,100 rpm. That sum bitch will tow whatever you want it to.
Awesome video again will, and those guys were cool as hell. Nice build. I'm shocked at the numbers.
That's cool, 5+years ago I helped a buddy put a 12 valve from a tractor in his Excursion and it was sick
Really cool project… it’s nice to see a 4bt do so well
Love these dyno/science comparison videos
Glad you like them!
I have a 4bt in a F150 with a similar 4bt setup, a self ported head, P pump, Hx 30 over Hx35 compound, the same Colt cam, Stage 2 injectors with 035 pump valves. I can see 50+ boost with only a small puff of smoke off the line. No smoke under load when its warm. I was shocked at the HP numbers produced by the Kuntz Bro Excersion. Good job guys!! I am also considering the ported head.....
Lotsa sauce and still plenty of room under the hood for activities with a 4 banger! Cool swap guys, I need one as my family hauler
Right on!
I wish you all would have the camera outside or a picture in picture showing the exhaust during the dyno pulls so we could see what kind of difference it made.
I have been building my 4bt 1964 Dodge W300 power wagon with the VE pump hoping for 200+hp with the way I set it up. My son and I hope to have this truck done by the end of August we hope. Videos like these always inspire us to keep going😊
Good luck!
@@pddofficial Thank you😊
Great video, honest presentation. I appreciated it! If you are looking for a ve pump 4bt truck to work on next year, let me know...
Great video guys 👍🏻
This single video makes me want a 4BT
Nice, I've got a little 4bt with an a pump in my f150. Haven't modded it at because it gets 32 to 36 mpg in town!
Nice!
That’s awesome! I drive a UPS truck (the very long ones called “1300 step van”) with a Mercedes 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel (4.2 liter I believe) and I get 25mpg loaded with 15k lbs of packages in the city. 4bts are much more simple engines, than the Mercedes “O” series.
Mercedes are much higher quality of engineering
@@1411MEDIA true, but their injection system is a lot more complicated.
OM606 seems pretty straight forward, if only Merc had made a 6 liter variant, it would’ve decimated all
Will that was an awesome video I'm really interested i head mods what works and what doesn't keep these awesome video coming take care and God bless you and stay safe

Love the video!!!! You earned a new subscriber 😊
Awesome! welcome!
Imagine getting absolutly wiped by a box truck
Imagine getting wiped by a 4 cylinder box truck on top of that
bread truck for the win. that announcers job is awesome.
The power that little 4BT makes is crazy! And with killer fuel economy
Yes it is a great running setup!
I need this for my excursion!
Absolute Pressure in Utah is like 11.9 right? So at peak boost (54.4) that single was humming at a PR of 5.57. I’d be interested in how that setup behaves down at sea level.
We need an update on the MPGs on the way home !!!
Great content
The engine’s running more efficiently now, I’m sure the fuel mileage is better too
Always thought the 4BT was underappreciated. Would love to have a daily with one.
They are loud and vibrate
i have a 95 f150 with one, they are loud and vibrate, and slow w ab 200 hp 400 ftlbs, but still fun
Toss that in a light truck like a Tacoma or Frontier and it would fly and get >25 MPG’s I bet.
Just curious?? What transmission are they running? What harmonic balancer??? What pump modifications??
Thank You So Doing This 4 BT F150 f the 3v 5.4 too
Did I miss the injector upgraded sizes.? Great video and I learnt something lol
5x.013 pdd injectors
Fun video thank you.
👍🏽👍🏽 love the 4bt’s
That thing made 960 ft lbs of torque!!! Sheeshhh!!
I have a 1963 Willy's Jeep Wagoneer that I'm thinking about converting to the 4bt. Have some body work to do on it first. Just got it home this past May. Been sitting at my parents house since I bought it in high school for $100 because the previous owner had broken a shifting fork. Dad and I fixed that and had it running.
Im sure its been done, but you guys should do a 4 valve head swap with one of your 24v conversion kits.
what about end exh manifold difference before and after ??
Curious if another engines p pump can be adapted to an early 4bta ?
What kind of mpg are you getting with normal driving + AC running?
Really loved the show. I really want to know how you dealt with the gasser computer mating, and the tranny shifting differences... That is my concern when thinking of swapping my 5.4L "T-crap" for a mostly stock 4bt.
we did not do the swap on this truck. what we would recommend is reaching out to diesel conversion specialist and asking what they do when doing this conversion.
Man I wanna do this to my suburban
That thing is rowdy.
i allways wondered why the 4bt engines were so heavy.appearently cummins made sure the bottom end was bulletproof for industrial use longevity.am sure that engine would be loads of fun in a old ranger.could run 12's while getting 30 mpg.
way too heavy for a ranger
It’s because they’re the same as a 5.9L 12 valve /6bt just missing two cylinders. So you’ve still got a rather heavy cast iron block
@@famousmidnight it's been done before.
@@wyattlewis8671 Oh, I'm sure it's been done just doesn't make any sense. So many other engines would not only fit better but make more power. 4bt for it's weight/power is a waste of time. LS obviously but also om606, m57 and others would be the better choice
I skipped around to see the results. What else was done to this engine before? Injectors, turbo?
Would love to see more 4bt content
I want to know what the background music was during the head swap scene?
I need to do this to mine
Ford really blew it on not hooking up with Cummins. Oh well, with guys like PDD, I am sure their will be great swaps
Hopefully these guys regeared the truck so they can have a cruise speed of 66-70mph at 1500-1600 rpms. That big mfr could probably see 30+ mpg if it was geared for it. They're probably producing 550-600 ft#'s at 1600 but their trans or differential gearing is working against them.
would love to put this in my super duty. i wonder how coolant tempts would hold when towing though
at 350hp should be just fine at the 400hp might gt a little warm
Video changed my mind about a 4bt swap in my 96 f250 lol
Don’t waste your time just get a 5.9
Ain’t ever seen a bread truck move like that before.
One of these days you guys should test an intake horn ive always been curious if they actually help or if its just a Gimmick
we all run stock horns here if that tells you anything
@@pddofficial How about on a 6.7 Cummins? Do you have any one running that with the stock setup? After watching swapping the stock for The Banks replacement intake that's now available that's not even close to being "A Gimmick" now is it ?. Flow That. !
I'm getting parts together to build an engine like that for my 2000 F150 4x4
Wow I like to have a truck like that pretty nice
I live in Texas and can only find 4bts in Florida or other states?????
Gee whiz Will, where's the charger project??? Great project and job though.. I haven't forgot
If we’re lucky we’ll never see it again.
What transmission are they running in that excursion? I might have to do a 4bt swap
4r100
Up here in Wisconsin we got a 4bt in a minirod pulling tractor with a single hx55 no intercooler or aftercooler but we are running water injection and we're sitting around 700hp
you pull conpact diesel?
@@cs-gj3yf yes I do
@@danrupprecht2836 nice i pull lpsd, a bit smaller class then you haha
@@cs-gj3yf I haven't heard of lpsd
@@danrupprecht2836 limited pro stock diesel, they are garden tractors, 6k-12k rpm out of a 1105 kubota, the limited pro stocks are 200-400 hp and the limited pro stocks are 100-150hp, limited pro run 50 psi of boost and limited pro run 100psi+. all the classes are 3 cylinder
I do find it funny it took 2 of you to get that head around I throw 6bt heads fully dressed with manifold and turbo around like nothing and I'm only 170
8:30 Ouch, get yourself a set of 3/8 impact sockets. The ones from Gearwrench are affordable.
yes!
435hp 963Tq 25:29
For an SUV that is pretty much an f250 I think a 5.9 would be good to use
Anytime volume increases boost drops, but it’s still more flow. The numbers prove that. That’s why I don’t listen when people talk boost. What’s your volume, lol.
I need this engine in my f150
Ya its stock , ya just a clean up , ya light port work , ya I know how to port I may have....
Oh man I want to pull the 4bt out of my skytrak and boost it up. Can anyone tell me how you use a 6 piston p. Pump on a 4 cylinder cummins?
There is a 4cyl p pump as well. The ve pumps are more common. I'm pretty excited to build my p pump 4bt, after watching this
I'm surprised you didn't talk about drive pressure .
Doubt they measured it.
That is an impressive build. I've seen a couple Excursions with a 5.9L Cummins swap. I've always been curious how it would work with a 4BT as far as mileage and power. It looks very capable to me. Should be a great family cruising tow rig. Curious if they did anything to the transmission. Is that still the stock Ford automatic? Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the support! And Seth did report that they regularly use the vehicle to go on family trips since it's both comfortable and fuel efficient.
Awesome swap,, I bet the whole driving experience is night and day, steering must feel more responsive with the loss of weight over the 10.
Gotta love it, Ford makes it, cumminz shakes it!!
Ya we put a dpc triple disc converter, transgo shift kit, performance rebuild kit and the us shift that controls it also increases pressure for better holding.
@@sethkuntz6237 Thanks for sharing that information. Did you see any mileage improvement from the new head on the way home?
Holy shit.
Can you do a cost breakdown?
What all do you want to know the prices for? Head? Turbo? The whole swap? PDD can really only help with the cost of the parts we installed here, you'd have to give the Kuntz boys a call if you're interested in details on the swap itself.
i know i knew seths face. he was in diesel power challenge.
Yes he was. Placed 3rd with a true daily driver. Highest finish for a 12 valve ever.
I’m still curious about the choice to do 4bt instead of a 5.9. Just because? That’s good enough, I suppose. Fuel mileage? I got 26 hand calculated in my 2003 Ram 2500, and that was going around 75 on the highway. Conditions were really good, but still, I always got good mpg in that truck, and everything was stock.
Mean while I get 14 to 17 on my 04.5 lol, granted that is the year they added the post injection and the egr camshaft so I run a lot hotter and run a good bit more fuel
@@codcade auto? Mine had the manual, so that helped quite a bit, as well. Either way, the later 5.9s could be tuned to get really good fuel mileage, but the 2003s were known to be the best in stock form in that regard from what I recall.
@@f5tornadeau I have an nv5600
@@f5tornadeau stock fuel turbo and tune as well
FUUUUUUUUUUUDDDGGEE!!! Maybe I shoulda gone with a 4 instead of a 6 for my HMMWV swap??!!??
Curious, what transmission was used with the 4BT in the Ford Excursion?
Probably an adapter with the Ford trans. Not sure what the part number is on them but those f250 and up trans are really solid.
Ford transmission that came in the excursion with a shift kit.
5r110 will take anything a 4bt can make. Pretty study transmission with the right tuning.
👍👍
What were the stock torque numbers ?
Look at 25:34 in the video.
Did they use the stock Ford transmission?
Yes it is a 4r100
What kinda intercooler?
Stock 6.0 intercooler
👍💪
What transmission is it using?
If think it was a 4r100
And still running grid heater and stock charge pipe 😂 theres more power everywhere. Throw some 5” exhaust on that thing and let it breathe
It's making good power and torque for their daily driver
4 inch exhaust will flow enough to make more power than you're ever going to get out of a 4bt
that's the best thing that happened to that ford (Cummins) powerjoke trash gone by by
What injetors size and cc into ppump?
5x.013 pdd injectors with a maxed and balanced ppump from farrell diesel service max ccs is 620
Awesome numbers, congrats, thx!
@@sethkuntz6237 @6:42 the dyno sheet says 7x.011 and 16deg of timing?
Isn't it too hot egts?
For a sort burst like that it is no problem
Get video will I was going ask Josh why you and Todd haven't posted any video of your trucks enjoy watching them even the sales give aways keep on dieseling
Yikes, rock tumbler under the hood.
But all the diesel kids tell me they get 25 + mpg
And those kids all have a stage 5 toon, lift kit, 35” mud tires, a slipping trans and blowing smoke from every stop too right?!
Those diesel douches as I call them are comical to listen to when they start spewing their shit.
😎🇺🇸🍺
So right on those VE pumps being hot garbage
I no guys pulling 25mpg with their 6bt...
