There have been MANY installments to the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise over the years. I've been looking through them with my current free time and realised that NO ONE is really "winning" against Freddy Krueger in these movies. He's always there once they, inevitably, fall asleep. I want to figure out how you can actually BEAT Freddy Krueger at his own nightmarish games.

i would like to take a second to thank matpat for everything, i have been with you for as long as i can remember, and as i grow older i notice that some things he has talked about are the things that i have learned about in my math and science class, i now understand some of the things that he is talking about, and he has helped me grow as a learner. before, i struggled to pay attention in classes because of my ADHD, but now i realize how interesting science could actually be, and matpat, if you are reading this i want you to know that you have been my role model, and we all love you! thank you for helping me i the times i really needed it. i am also adding that 2 months ago i learned from my friend about rem and i understand everything you are talking about

I like the idea that Nightmare on Elm Street is just a hidden meaning for depression. Makes it alot scarier than a random physcopathic killer
Why are people so obssesed with theories that say that supernatural stuff dosent exist?!
@@lucasdesouza5752 It's interesting!
@@lucasdesouza5752 think in the past a lot of society did the opposite, labeling mental health AS supernatural vs embracing that mental health can be as scary/dangerous as a supernatural villain (i know this comment is a month old but it is an interesting topic to me :) )
@lucasdesouza5752
Because people are lazy Writers.
I think the meaning of a nightmare on elm street is of parents worst fears about a stranger a man an unexplainable demon entity or force of nature that either human or supernatural is attacking their kids with in their subconscious fears and flaws about themselves and are in the end powerless to stop him. Which is the embodiment of hate, revenge, and evil itself taking everything from humans that believe that things like depression, mental issues and trauma are the real reason behind their problems. Nightmare on Elm Streets meaning imo is about the terrifying truth of life that humans are scared to face which is “The Unexplainable” and the scary road we all ride on which is fate and how there’s things in life that just happen without meaning, remorse or reasoning.

This was a cameo to be honest.
Hi im James A. Jannise and today were gonna be looking at The Nightmare on Elm Street!
Matpat talking about the terrifying experience of being terrified by the box covers of horror movies in blockbuster is very nostalgic. Ironically a lot of the horror movie covers that scared me the most as a kid ended up being very tame or bad movies, but hey at least they new how to make creepy covers.

Matpat: killing people in their sleep? Seems like cheating.
Dead by Daylight Players: *yes*
It’s a little unfair, but Freddy’s not unbeatable, you just have to remember what pallets weren’t there before and know how to buy time when you’re being chased and use time effectively outside of chases, it’s pretty much how you counter every DbD killer, just know where you can go to be safe when the chase begins
The nightmare animatronics just laughing in the moment

The James cameo is probably the best i’ve seen in a while. Mainly because his lines feel more like James actually wrote them, unlike other youtube featurships. Props you both of ya!
It isn't a Cameo, fucking dumbass.
A Cameo is a SHORT appearance- usually a minute or less.
You even said yourself he has lines, idiot.
The best crossover of all time. Dead Meat and Matpat. Legendary.
Technically if Freddy is attacking people in *their* dreams, the victims should be able to control their own dreams as soon as they realize they are dreaming.
Technically, the only way to actually control dreams is if you are aware its a dream. Lucid dreaming, the state of knowing you're in a dream and controlling said dream can be quite hard. If you're terrified and not in a lucid state I'd sayit would be extremely difficult to achieve lucid dreaming if you're occupied with being terrified of a dream based murderer.
Freddy has power over their dreams leaving them powerless against him
T Herr The kids tried to do this in the third movie, and it didn’t end happy.
Not that easy. Also, dreams in Elm St act more as an alternate reality souls go when people dream. There is a huge connection between dreams and the afterlife in the movies that people tend to forget.
Yeah but with that same logic you would realise your dreaming, get scared and wake up, I'm pretty sure (don't quote me) but I'm pretty sure if your Dream is in lucid state, any state of fear will wake you up
Freddy: Exists.
My dream catcher: I’m about to end that man’s entire career.

Thing is though, you didn’t have to be in REM sleep for Freddy to get you. Plenty of his victims had just nodded off for a second in class or something and got nailed.
Wrong, fucking dumbass.
You CANNOT dream without R.E.M. and Freddy CANNOT reach people unless the dream. You can Day R.E.M. dream, dipshit.
Not sure why you think nodding off won't trigger R.E.M. but it most definitely does, dumbass.
If you couldn't day dream it wouldn't be called Day Dreaming dumbass.
How. Dare. You?! That was such a missed opportunity to not label one of the rat boxes 'Algernon'!

Scientist: (Turns on radio)
Scientists: *VOCAL PERCUSSION ON A WHOLE ‘NOTHER LEVEL*
One scientist: “Wait... What is this even contributing to?!”

... and that is why MatPat loves science ( he needs all the allies he can get against Mickey and his evil empire ... ).
I mean, we just like EXPERIMENTING with them. If they happen to die, well... that's just more data :D Be happy about it, because if we didn't experiment on mice, we'd be experimenting on you :D

Great vid! Unfortunately, dreaming isn't limited to the REM cycle. This is an old belief that has been debunked. More recent studies have found that dreaming also takes place during non-REM. Speaking from personal experience as well, dreaming can take place during all parts of the sleep cycle. My nightmares start the second I fall asleep and don't let up until I wake. No matter what time I wake up during the night, it is always in the middle of a dream. Even a short nap will have me go straight into a nightmare. Freddy hasn't gotten me yet though!

Don't mess with the brain, mess with your dreams. Lucid dreaming. Imagine the whole town training to beat Freddy at his own game. This is nightmares we're talking about, not dreams. I consider them a separate beast. For me dreams come and go pretty easily, it's normal brain function. Nightmares seem to be connected directly to our fears, based on what I've experienced. I identified signs in repeated nightmares and worked on my self image. Now that I don't care what people think of me I have like two nightmares a year. Either new fears with new clues that I write in my journal or recycled nightmares that I've 'played' before and know how to solve. It's pretty fascinating actually.
Dongle?
I do want to point out that in the first movie the kids would fall asleep and almost immediately would attack them at night. Giving them almost no time to enter REM. Also, dreams can happen outside of REM.
Maybe I’m wrong, but thought I’d point it out.

@@silverpaladin0710 This is true, he panicked and allowed Freddy to regain control. As a comic book fan/writer/artist whatever his gimmick was in the movie, he should have remained calm and reminded Freddy that every villain has a weakness that can be exploited at any time the writer decides. If he did that, then he wouldn't have died. But then we would've gotten a different movie at that point.

MatPat's theory reminds me of the in-universe dream suppression drug Hypnocil, which was introduced in the NoES 3:Dream Warriors! Though I don't know if the films clarify, it works like the real-life drugs MatPat was referring to! In the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET comics by AVATAR PRESS, the adults are literally drugging the town's teenagers with hypnocil to ensure Freddy can't attack the town's teenagers in their dreams & for the most part its shown to be effective!

@@lucasm.3864 shut up 1 its just a joke 2 No way that could work
GOLDEN EXPERIENCE REQUIEM!
Christie Marie Hey! That’s not nice.
Send the doom Slayer to hunt him for eternity.
Endgame was the most ambitious crossover
The film Theorists: Hold my beer
Puts dead meat in the video
At least Dead Meat makes good and memorable content
Jacob Negrete yeh dude best cross over to exist

Hey Mat, here's a fun idea!
Pull Freddy into out world but DON'T off him, instead sedate and transfer him to a secure isolated area. Then lock him up in a holding cell monitored by scientists and maybr a few various spiritualists.
My longest period of no sleep is 4 days, mainly because I had nowhere to sleep at the time being homeless and all. One question I always had about the Nightmare on Elm Street movies is why did Freddy wait so long to come back and then start killing teenagers, but none of the parents who were the ones who killed him. There is an entire street of people sleeping, yet he only targets the teenagers. How does he even know which ones to target?
Me: watching film theory.
Me: *sees James's silhouette
Still me: "James A Janeese here"
Yes XD
Your'e dead meat
Haha nice
Freddy: *exists*

Um I lucid dream but most of the time my dream asks if I want to lucid dream and I say no because I'm to lazy to make my own story :/

It literally took me this long to understand the symbolism with "Losing my Religion" being played while Freddy killed Chase in New Nightmare. The song is by R.E.M. Rapid Eye Movement. Dreaming
Funfact: the stock photo with the dude at 8:17 is from a German journalist team called strg+f. They wanted to see where the photo would end up, if they put it into the net. Interesting to see it here
DEAD MEAT AND GAME THEORY - THIS IS ALL I’VE EVER WANTED
i saw James in the thumbnail and thought oh yaay new dead meat video then i saw who it was by....
Jake Yeet I thought the exact same thing I was so surprised I heard matpat
The movies are way ahead of you, MatPat.
In “Dream Warriors” they introduce “Hypnocil”, a drug that prevents dreams. In “Freddy vs Jason” they have the kids at the hospital on Hypnocil, and the main cast of kids try to get Hypnocil to prevent themselves from dreaming.
The trouble was that it was never FDA approved
Then, looking at Freddy vs Jason, the drugs were limited to stopping kids in the mental institute from having dreams with Freddy in them
Im glad someone pointed this out. I couldn’t remember which movie it was
Took the words out of my mouth
@@cameronbird8327 Hypnocil was from the 3rd movie but the franchise goes in and out as to whether or not it's available.
In the remake, it doesn't exist an they steal adrenaline.
I still prefer Freddy vs Jason. I watched it with my older cousin when I was way to young... good times
I use the soundtrack till this day to relax and work in home office
I think that I would probably be OP if I was up against Freddy because I practically NEVER have dreams lmao
I thought the answer was gonna be to lucid dream so you can control your dream and just laser beam Freddy out of existence
It's simple: just activate your stand before you fall asleep.
Edit: this is my most liked comment and it's a Jojo's reference...
I don't know how to feel about that.
