I never understand why you rev the bike so much everytime you start the bike cold… I know these bikes are old and junky but still. You’re a good mechanic, let’s show that to everyone
Rookie , always use a small drill bit for a pilot hole before useing the screw
Exactly, I was like, wtf?
Vin can outrun anything up to a 490
That's one way for him to stay healthy
Vinny Eats 125's for Breakfast!🐶
@@AnthonyRufo-rc1zm wot breathing oil brother?😬😥💀💀💀😬🇿🇦🏈
@craigmorgan4676 Most of the times his bikes don't smoke that much
@@AnthonyRufo-rc1zmbreak in mix, couple heat cycles and she’s ready to go leaner.
Take the broken gear pieces and assemble them on the other half of the gear, that will tell you if there are pieces missing inside the case. Great video Joe.
Generally when a piston top is that clean, especially on a 2 stroke, it's from coolant being burned in the combustion chamber. It steam cleans the piston and head. White smoke is also a sign of coolant being burned.
Have u considered a parts washing station? This definitely needed it. Enjoy your videos and the knowledge you have.
Your videos are amazing. I used to be afraid to split the cases on some of my old stuff but your videos raised my confidence levels at-least 10 fold over the last couple years. I just recently dove head 1st into a complete rebuild on a 2012 Polaris RZR 900 XP engine and it turned out amazing. All you really need is a GOOD service manual for the engine that you are working on to be able to rebuild an engine from the bottom up. Make 100% sure that you follow the manual step by step. Do not take any short cuts or they WILL bite you rite in the Wallet later on.
i mean if JOE can do it we all can with motivation
he used to just do top speed runs and clean up plastics with wd40 that was about it.
see where he is now, bought a house a field and does complet engine rebuild now... you just gotta get motivated and try
5 years ago i didnt even know how to change brake pads... started with that then bearings, the jet in carb, and then in 2022 with a friend we bought a yfz450 taht didnt run but my friend thinks he is a mecanic but at the end i know more then him but i never try i get scared but we ended up taking tha engine apart so many times tha this year i change a base gasket on my raptor 350 all by my self (will need a new piston later but i was proud i did this by my self) the yfz450 we sold cause we never got it running right carb was complicated even with videos we got fed up and sold it for a 150€ loss a person.
but now i feel way less scared to take engines apart
34:00 I was actually stunned when he made the correct decision to split the cases and do it right, and not just pop that crank seal out, which given his past videos is what would of been expected. Maybe there is hope….
lol
Yeah he tries, but he does take a lot of shortcuts.
He needs to get into a habit of power washing his projects or customers equipment before taking them apart!!!
@gnx157, who cares which way he does it as long it works ,know it all.
@@jasonjgr8580 LOL
You need to go to harbor freight tools and pick up a parts washer
I’m 18 and I fricking love every single of your dirt bike fix videos
Keep it up my man 🔥
Every time I watch a new video I learn something new. Never knew that about crank seals. Great videos. Thanks for educating us!
First 2 seconds I already knew it was a crankseal hh. Once you know you know! glad you learnt. I just sat there thinking.. what is he doing.. it’s not gonna get any better 😂😅
😀@@okerhrh4139
Lol, your neighbors must love you.
No neighbors out there.
Love watching your videos you do a great job telling every little detail about everything you build hoping to do the same thing soon
Perfect for repelling mosquitos in the summer 😂😂
Finally, a pressure washer. It's much nicer watching someone working on a clean machine.
lol Much much easier to work on something that is clean as well.

Venier calipers? Time to step up your game and purchase a set of O.D micrometers, a I.D micrometer set and a bore taper micrometer. I suggest Starrett as they are in my opinion the gold standard of precision micrometers made in the USA.
Edit: Central tool is another premium micrometer.
I second that, said that earlier. Would 100% recommend starrett or Mitotoyo. Cheap and worth the outlay. Tools for life if you look after them particularly on small engines. Not so much in an engineering shop. My old man was a toolmaker, im still using his gear...they were second hand when he bought them 35 years ago.
Vin is right color of a properly jetted 2stroke spark plug
86 125yz suffered from gears cracking, i had one and it sucked. 87 cured that..this is why I stay with Honda.💪🏴
Those plastics should be donated to an art museum LOL.
Reeds ..."both are kind of open", "they don't look too bad though", "so those check out". Really?
Please replace ALL the 37 year old seals, regardless.
Joe Joe u have a good eye for absolute classics I had a early 90s yz 80 and the white with red seat is the best look the yz ever had
Right off the bat at first start looks like it's burning transmission oil and two-stroke oil. Add somebody with a YZ250 that sat for a long time and it started and you can hear the main bearings were all pitted and rusted. So I had to rebuild the motor split the cases replace the bearings replace the seals.
I had a cr500 with a bad seal in the case it would catch fire when trying to start it was a unusual honda cr500 the kicker on the left side and rear sprocket was on the right side
Well Joe....i didn't see any mosquitos when you smoked em out
Love the vids! But ya gotta quite cold revving a 2 stroke! A friend of my brother' actually blew his 2 stroke up from cold revving it and riding it when it was cold. 2 strokes do not like cold revving.
Hes gotta be trolling
@oakesiii3412 how? Trying to help him from blowing his bikes up?
@@Antiquefarmequipment he knows it needs a rebuild anyway.. if he revs it from cold he will get people like you commenting 😂
@oakesiii3412 is not just this bike, it's all bikes. Even freshly rebuilt ones 🤣 you have no idea
@@Antiquefarmequipment I had a beta 300 2 stroke I'd never wot it when cold but this guy does it for the comments I'm sure of it 😂
Got to love Vinny, what a Dog he is.
Yea, every so often we even get to see Vinny s--t,,,, LOL
If you watch carefully, you'll see Vinnie beats this pooch off the line, AND returns too, under his own power! 1:05 Puppy Power!
You finally found some chunks.
Joe, your neighbors must love you..
What neighbor@?
I had a 2001 Yamaha YZ125. Wish I would have never sold it. I had more fun on that bike than I did my CR250R.
First problem was revving the heck out of a cold engine.
Let someone who knows what they are doing rebuild it.
Do the mains you're splitting the case's anyway and there cheap 👍
If you plan on keeping the bike and adding it to your collection I would go ahead and buy new plastics for it you'll love the difference it makes on the look it'll be beautiful awesome video as always thanks Joe👍
11:30 your power valve was also not moving. I think youre missing a couple pieces there.
Vinny has approved the rebuild, so it's a go!😅😊😂
Still watching. But really clean combustion chambers is almost always a sign of burning coolant. It steam cleans the inside of the combustion chamber. Also that stain on the crank is from it sitting in coolant.
I love Vinnie!! He is a cool pooch. He sure does love Joe ❤
Farming trying to get the power valve bolt out... comedy gold right there...😂
got a suzuki pe175 that eating the transmission oil by the gallon😂. I believe its just the rihgt hand crank seal and it also has mad low compression so probably new ring. problem is I cant find any rings since it has a 0.25 over piston. fun time
I had the same bike, PE 175. It was a pile of junk. My friends used to call it Prolems Exceed.
It was fun to ride when it did run.
Holy crap lots of chunks !!
Oh and i heard this original YPVS powervalve design needed a good cleaning every top end due to the way it was designed it gathered carbon where actuation occurs and used to get junked and oiled and gooped up and the lever would strip out the teeth and lead to it not opening so they say to clean it all teally well and make sure the drum style valve rotates smooth.....may not be able to actuate the power valve without the motor on and those governor bearings put the pressure on the shaft as needed
I stopped at 3:26 right after you that you're going to just replace the right side oil seal. Both need to be replaced because the other is worn out too and it is easier to replace than the primary side.
I’m pretty sure he’s getting the correct puller for the stator and will replace that crank seal also. That’s what he eluded to later on at least.
Love the older bikes.
Always excited to see when it says video dropped 2 days ago !!! Thanks for all you do love your channel bro :)
I seen old 2 strokes like this on kijiji for 2000 bux.. people think just because its a vintage bike there suddenly worth all this money and there definitely not. 700 is fair i guess.. seen a 1997 cr500 on there for 20 000. U almost wanna message the guy and say are you ok…
Prices on anything "vintage" are crackpipe prices
Nothing rare or special about these bikes we would buy these all day for a few hundred in the late 80s and ride the beans out of them. As much as Id love another 2 stroke air cooled Im not gonna pay big $ for one
Since I've been watching Joe's Channel I have been screaming for him to buy a new Pressure washer!! The Day is finally here!
Something did fall out of the crankcase when you drained the oil.
I think it might of been the crush washer for the drain bolt
I stopped at 43:43 to say that a piston is measured at the skirt not anywhere near the top. Pistons are tapered. Correct clearance should be somewhere around two thousanths for a 125 for new and probably reject at three thousanths.
You can see a glob of sadness come out when you first drained the oil. It happened when you were walking back. 7:18
The look on your face at 19 seconds was priceless
Geez!! Hahah😂ole Smokey! Hey Vinny! Your fan club is here!!he’s getting a little frosty faced😊🎉
Base gasket was probably leaking coolant into the bottom end and lower part of the cylinder to cause the rust and excessive wear. And it’s amazing how many people service top ends without checking the ring gap!
I think you nailed it with this comment, makes a lot of sense.
Vinnie is happy with your progress 😊. That YZ is nice.
Very good video love your dog 🐕!
That was fun,Vinny is pretty fast ,my Dog Lady used to run beside me on My 1982 KX 80,loads of fun.
Used to be a nice cycle. Looks like its been through a tornado. Great - engine out video. Special guest star 2Vinny upset over the Alpo monies this project is costing
Check the power valve was in the right way up…on the previous years,it could be put in upside down…I bought an 82 that was like that.Weird how it’s smashed that drive gear ?..!
Gotta love 80's bikes
I am pretty sure I am subscribed just so I can hear Joe say "power valve" not quite Canadian but not cowboy talk either. Greetings from Texas. When I was on the UP I asked where could I get a drink of water and was told the "bubbler" (water fountain) was on the wall . Never hear it before and never heard it since. But then again maybe I watch because I appreciative watching a skilled craftsman work.
Yo! That looks like the 85 from years ago that had water in the gas. I’ve been around a while haha.
that's a skeeter killer
I Bought a 1997 Suzuki RM250 for $950 with the same problem. I replaced the right crank seal, and still burned transmission transmission oil. Used up spark plugs in 5 minutes, so I just sold it.
After watching this video, I wish I kept it.
thru yet but was thinking since no apparent leaks in coolant or oil, im betting its just low on compression and maybe there got water in the fuel cuz tht will make it smoke white as well, but most likely its just really worn and all the smoke is just excessive blow by and ive seen blueish smoke go from blue to whiteish with just the cocentration of more smoke, that blue tinge can dissipate and start to appear whiter simply due to the concentration of smoke particles and light not able to penetrate the cloud of smoke contributes to it not looking blue since it looks the most blueish when its a thinner, wispier type smoke where plenty of light can pass thru and somewhat illuminate the oil hydro carbons reflecting back appearing blueish
Love these videos I love working on atvs dirtbikes when I find them cheap. Wish there was a lot more cheap quads and dirtbikes around here.
Great video, Joe! Looks like you dodged a bullet on this one.
Great video once again thank you and vinnie just gets better one absolutely cool and beautiful 🐕 boy
That orange o-ring tells me that someone has been in that top end before,
Yamaha OEM small o rings are orange for the head
Joe seen that jump u did bro and the Vinsta is just a awesome little dog, my dog runs with my bike's they love it, keep the amazing videos coming bro
Top end rebuild joe
Nice work as always. I'm glad you were able to find that gear. I love that bike, can't wait for part 2 and the plastics cleaned up:)
Parts are so outrageous It’s unreal, looks like you’re having a blast. I’ve owned a lot of the bikes you’ve featured and watching the vids make me realize how much I miss trail riding. Thanks brother
11:34 power valve isn't rotating when you move the arm. The hole in the arm should have a flat spot that matches the flat spot on the power valve axle.
Love the content! Thanks for sharing!
Another great way to start the day ❤
Hey Joe i just got one of those runleader temp gages that goes under the spark plug its a copper washer its on my 98 kx250 i haven't run it yet i was wondering if you know if it can cause problems putting the extra washer under the spark plug it kinda seems weird to me to do this to my bike should i find somewhere else to put instead of under the plug thanks in advance joe 😀
Love air cooled 2 strokes of the late 70s and 80s
Anyone know if you can even get a green tag in Ca for them anymore?
Live in a place with great riding but not into 4 strokes
Great video, always a learning moment, even if it is What not to buy.
I love those projects complete ruin and bring it back to life💚
dude, i love your stuff. went riding atv's on pismo beach as part of a graduation trip and it spiraled from there i started reading/watching everything about engines/mechanics including a lot of your videos and ive just got a 1992 KTM 250sx. problem is that there is pretty much no info or parts available on the entire internet. certain gaskets are impossible to find and there is no info whatsoever. any advice on how to go about this?
Hold your vernier perpendicular to the piston when using it. You should be using a micrometer anyway but seeing this is what you had at least use correct technique. A cheap and easy way to do a pressure/leak test on a 2T is to block up the intake and exhaust ports. A simple bit of rubber to go between the intake studs and a secure bung in the exhaust. Then with the side covers off you can do that. Similar to what Tinmans saws channel has done in the past. All 2Ts work in the same principle so something to learn from small engine mechanics. Good job on pulling it down to inspect for damage. Check the rest of the bearings in the engine by seeing how much endfloat say the clutch or idle gear has. If the move its time to strip it down or its just a time bomb
I’ve always wondered how long these “rebuilds” last since piston/bore clearance, port chamfering or anything important is never done or at least never done on camera or mentioned.
can't wait to see the next video, good work Joe
Great video!!
Can you please tell me what is the optimal carburettor size for honda crm 68.8cc ?
(big bore - 46mm piston)
Stock exhaust, stock cdi.
Please 🙏
Glue a magnet to the back of you gauge
Blowing seals can be problematic
You should load up all the bikes you don’t want and bring them to mid Ohio vintage days and sell them. You’d love it.
Dam this guy beast im learned so much that im definitely getting yz125
I hope you got a great power washer!
based on my observation ... needs a top end rebuild and and right hand side crank seal replacement
Did you use that for a fog machine for Halloween 😂. Maybe keep it like that for the summertime and you could ride it around town for mosquitoes lol
Average person would have that cylinder bored , but in reality i would have it hones to next size piston and do some port work and that 125 will run strong , i have two of those YZ 125s and they both run top notch
When you first started draining oil something did fall in the drain pan seconds after you took the plug out
the best 420 content on youtube!.
Love the channel. Curious, from a business standpoint if you have more success from the resale or views from these videos?
Cheers!!
17:00 the carbon and oil look to be leaking from the power valve seals.
Flounder: "Oh Goodie!"
Joe gets a true trail ridin' junk yard dog, rode hard, tho'd out wet and leaned up against the back of the barn for nye on thirty years... and it's only 10 seconds into the video! This promises to be a good'un!
0:15 ...Joe, I think it's smoking a bit, not sure if you noticed.
didn't look to major other the rust in that cylinder wonder if someone had straight water in it at one time and gasket leaked and got in the jug and bike sat for a long time then someone put antifreeze in it Lader really not bad for 1980s 2 stroke and to me alot more easier to work on then a 4 stroke
I have a 86 yz250 and the stator is a reverse m27x1.0 and the flywheel/magneto look 200% different
When ur taking off that power valve rod make sure you put a Allen key or screw driver in the little slot of your gunna wreck the power valve rod that’s why there’s that slot there so you don’t wreck it
Yess, another never ending project 😂
Hi joe good tear down bet your glad you did could have been a lot worse cool bike though will be a nice machine when rebuilt and cleaned up take care and all the best ,the vinster is just a cool dog man 👍👌🔧🔧🔧🦴🦴🐾🐾❤️
