Agreed, Joe comes across as a really good guy. He has a great voice and sounds exactly like my best friend from years ago, who was an excellent mechanic. We used to ride and wrench our bikes together, and I'd get on his case for doing the same ignoring-good-ventilation stuff I see Joe doing in his videos...and died from cancer just before the pandemic. Hearing Joe speaking almost brings tears to my eyes at times, I still miss him most every day and every time I watch one of Joe's videos. So I can't help but nag Joe about it.

Agreed. This is why I will always stick to 2 strokes. It’s pretty simple and straightforward, and actually fun to work on. Most 4 strokes are a big pain to work on, and you really get frustrated at them. Plus, I can’t give up the power valve. It feels like a nitrous shot once it kicks in. Gives you an adrenaline rush every time!

Joe, as a general rule it's considered best practise to initially fill a rebuilt engine

coolant/antifreeze/water level. Saves wasting lots of expensive coolant mix.

Couple suggestions. There are a few companies that Replate cylinders. Replate being new Nikasil Plating. These cylinders are not steel bores. They are Nikasil Chrome
plated. The service typically cost under $300 including shipping to and from. Power Seal and Millennium are two companies that come to mind. Your cylinder comes back looking brand new and the bore is 100% to spec. Much better than an expensive used cylinder.
Second your not supposed to hone Nikasil Cylinders as the coating it very thin and hard and most standard hones won’t created usable cross hatch. A Diamond hone is needed.
Some other advise I would give since I’m assuming your flipping these bikes is that I would use Namura Piston Kits. They are very good pistons, come with or without gaskets and are priced very good.
On this build you probably would have saved $200

    • @baitmaster8706
      @baitmaster8706 Před 3 měsíci +5

Man you seem knowledgeable on cylinders but why would he do the cylinder the right way just to put a shit piston in it?. Joe's reputation is worth more than the savings between Namura and Pro-X, he doesn't have to be scummy to make a profit. Don't get me wrong, I buy chinese parts but not for my big bikes. My PW80 that I use for tool/beer runs (shed to garage, not to the store) has a namura cylinder and piston on it and it already looks like shit with about 6 hours on it. That bike makes like 4.79hp, I'd hate to see what a Namura does in a real engine.

    Hello,
To me you seem to be a nice, warm hearted guy. What troubles me is that I get the impression that you get fariytales from sellers and endning up paying to much for the bikes.
I would have taken along some basic tools/equipment to the seller. When seller gives a vital statement - I would have asked the seller if I could see for myself. If the seller says no, then I would walk away or offer a much lower amount of money. If the seller agrees and I see that the seller is wrong - I have a way to get it for the right price.
Some people feel bad about not telling the truth. Some people just feels great getting away with a lie that the buyer do not spot. But you seem to know all this.
I get a kick out of watching your work on CZcams. Keep up the handy work.😊

    Good job.
I personally would worry more about how the jetting is for the warm weather it will likely be ridden in, not how it runs when its cold out.

Vinny's hair is starting to grow back. 😊 hope he's staying warm with all that snow. since watching, I have acquired many new tools to use. Grandma who Love her tools. Just picked up that craftsman screwdriver with the quick change feature you used in this video. Did you bruise your left hand or was that the camera lighting? That bike looks nice. 2smoker
I would love to plow that. Cool HONDA😊. So Cal has nice weather.

Great vid. Question, should you not have a run in period before giving the it the beans? I have had a few 2-Stoke road bikes back in the day ie a RD350 YPVS, NS400r and TDR250 and took it pretty easy for the first few hundred miles (They were brand new).

When that nut dropped at 19:00 :o I usually apply a little grease to the gaskets just incase I need to remove them at a later date, prevents ripping them but doesn't affect the seal.Sounds nice and fruity :D Nice job as always

It never hurts to have a little extra oil in the gas, especially on break in. I always used to mix my gas a bit rich on the oil and never had any trouble with fouling out plugs. A little smoke is better than replacing the top end all the time 👍

The powerband on the 99s can be adjusted by the screw on the left side of the cylinder I go 1 1/4 with it you can go a little more or a little less than 1 turn you can feel the difference when you hit the powerband its all a preference! ive had this bike since 99 & its still in my garage in 2024

Its not a hone and i wont do anything besides cleaning cylinder wall , honning process means get a proper clearnace between cyl and piston by measuring them both with proper tools ~ not calipers, it also means …achive nice round and square cylinder walls and crosshatch ,what you do is just wild guess . Good video and i enjoy it

This was me as a teen after school or on weekends. We use to ride on ice too. Almost all dirt bikes back then were 2 strokes. LOL good time.

Sounds great. I always mix my gas 40:1 initially it was because 4 gallons to 16 oz Jug of HP2 Honda Synthetic 2 stroke oil which... is my favorite by far. I also only use VP 110 racing fuel that I can get at the pump at a gas station near me. is just that easy. But then I talked to a guy at the local shop and he told me that counter to what you would think, running 32:1 actually runs at a slightly higher temp, because the additional friction by the viscosity of the gas being a little bit thicker, I don't know if that is true, but also although I like the 2 stroke smoke, I don't like how much a bike smokes with 32:1
