  • I've paddled hundreds of miles on Britain's canals and these are just some of my tips and thoughts for a safe paddle.
    The main points are: -
    Inland Waterways License
    Canal infrastructure
    Locks
    Tunnels
    Your personal safety
    Other canal users
    Wildlife
    ... and thinking ahead
    Happy Paddling!

Hello narrowboater here, happy to have paddle boarders on the canal👍. Great video, but to correct one thing, a barge is for freight, a wide beam is just a wide beam.
Again, tunnels, great things, but I would be nervous about meeting a paddleboard in a tunnel. As you say its deceptive when you see lights , trying to gauge the distance. The other thing is shouting in a tunnel, no chance I would hear. Standing above the engine is noisy, in a tunnel that noise is compounded. A whistle maybe. The other thing is I along with other boaters, sometimes go a bit faster in a tunnel as it keeps you centred and stops you bouncing off the walls. Hopefully🤣.
And finally, mine is 50' and weighs over 16 tonne, so even heavier than you may think!
Great video and great content and advice👍

I was on the Avon today around Warwick, rotten sanitary towells and baby wipes on tree branches at flood levels, not loads but, enough to make you really not want to get wet.
Awesome what you say about the cleanliness of the canals, no raw sewerage being released into them when it floods.
    My preference now.
    Thank you...

Enjoyed your video, thanks. We live near the Leeds Liverpool canal but as Newby paddlers we are not sure about paddling on the canal yet. The water up here is in a terrible state with blue green algae. Less nervous of boats than swans 🦢 for sure. Once got chased by an angry swan when we were on a narrow boat. Not funny at all. They have a bad temper.

They can be aggressive for sure but they can't really hurt you. Like all birds, they have hollow bones, so they may hiss and peck a bit but that's about it. They want to damage a wing.

Good question - so the reason for no fin question I'm thinking shallow rivers and damaging the 9" fin I have
But I think I will source a smaller flexi job - as I suspect its fair to say without a fin the board will be difficult to track in a straight line ??

Very useful video. I’m just starting to get into paddle boarding. I’ve been a longboard surfer for over 30 years but I would like to make use of the excellent waterways network very near my home in rural Warwickshire. My question is, do you go out in colder temperatures ? If so what gear do you wear ? I use a 4/3 full suit to surf UK (S.West) and booties and don’t really want to purchase another suit if I don’t need to.
Finally, are there ever instances when you would wear a helmet…(fast water etc) ?
Thanks again for the video….sorry for all of the questions.

    • @teawithq3351
      @teawithq3351  Před rokem +1

Hi, On white water or through rapids I'd advise using a helmet but I rarely paddle that kind of water myself on a SUP these days. I'm from a kayaking background so BA's and safety gear are a big thing for me. I paddle all year around so it's really only ice and strong winds that stop me. I have a quick video on what I wear that may help (czcams.com/video/hE6naH7jezU/video.html). Wet suit wise I always wear separate leggings and top as It's basically a dry sport so it makes having a wee much easier lol. Where in Warwickshire are you? I'm in Rugby.

There are a couple in the UK that are maintained by local associations actually that you need a particular permit to paddle on but you're never going to accidentally find yourself paddling on one so a quick Google search would give you the information. Basically if it's on the Canal and River Trust interactive map (canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-network) then your British Canoeing membership covers it.

I am both surprised and concerned that no mention is made of the risk of Weals Disease/ Leptospirosis. Whilst it is a rare disease it is water borne and carried by rats. The disease can be fateful and there are instances of people being effected in the past. There are precautions that should be taken especially if you should fall into the water at any time.
