      well, we existed before the communists, and the turks didn't burn us all down before that, that's why something different than socialist blocs remained. And yes, we are Orthodox Christians, also there is an Orthodox community in the Czech Republic... after the WW1 many people wanted to be orthodox and there are many churches and a strong community they help a lot against the nazis but they suffered the most during WW2 when the occupier killed many of them. Unfortunately our oldest churches in Bulgaria were burned to the ground, so more old churches are from the 18th century.

  • @tsvetelina7498
    @tsvetelina7498 Před 2 lety +4

    Here’s a little explanation of “blagodarya”. The first part of the word “blago” means “good”, the second part “darya” means “to give”. So when you say thank you in Bulgarian, you actually say “(In return for your kindness I) give you good”.

    Honestly guys, well done. You should be paid by our lousy Ministry of Tourism by promoting the country. Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Ruse are my personal favourites. LGBT rights have improved quite a lot. Sofia Pride began with huge tensions and we reached to a level of higher tolerance yet more needs to be done. You probably have heard of Azis - one of the most famous Roma gay singers in Bulgaria. Yet very highly talanted.

    Guys, please consider visiting Belgrade, Serbia during this year's EuroPride at the end of September. It's the first EuroPride being organized in Eastern Europe and your support would mean the world to the LGBT community in the Balkans 🏳️‍🌈🌈 We're struggling to keep Pride going against a conservative backlash by right-wing nationalist parties after 8-9 years of successful marches. They're using monkeypox and all sorts excuses to try and cancel the first EuroPride in Eastern Europe, from which Serbia would hugely benefit as a country. Plus Belgrade is known for its vibrant night life, I'm sure you'd enjoy this eclectic city.

    The city of Plovdiv is really somewhere there in the first 10ths oldest continuously populated cities in the world (not only Europe;, the city many different names can vouch for that:: Pulpudeva, Trimontzium, Philipopolis, Puldin, Filibe... (we use to memorize the list for school, those are the few I still remember). Thank you for noticing that the ruins are really nicely included in the modern city. It is really difficult in that city to build something new, since the moment you start digging, ruins pop up. I remember as a school kid (that was the 80') I was in one of the crews to unearth the ruins, when they started digging the road under the central post office (you show it at 6:41). Let me tell you, the archaeologist were not at all happy that they decided to proceed with the road. The mosque you show is not a functioning one, there is one more, a bit down that same street. The 8% muslims is a bit misleading, as they are mainly concentrated in two regions (Разград и Кърджали) - it is quite peculiar, there they make about 80% of the population, but then there is no real need of mosques in the other places (of course in big cities like Sofia and Plovdiv there will be). The ancient theater you show at 2:36 is forever used for different concerts, plays, so one.. and it is quite amazing if you think about it: romans were sitting where now you will sit to enjoy a piece of performance. The only thing I do not like is the fence they mounted recently - at 3.15 you can see it in its full "beauty" and I really do not now how it was allowed to be put there. Before, you can always go sit on the stones, and enjoy the view. Probably it was due to people getting in for free for the performances, but this is not a good reason to spoil the view. The ancient stadium was quite big, they were using it for chariot racing, so the "Hunger games" reference is quite on spot! You can see the "singing fountains" only after dark and yes, they are quite the show, just as in Dubai, but here they use also different color lights, so I would say even better (this is personal preference, some people may not like it to be so colourful). When they opened them, back it the 70', I remember the first night there were so many people around the lake that you cannot catch even a glimpse of what is happening, probably half of the city was there that night. Also about the Main Street at 5:47 you talk about bumping into people, but (at lest in the past) that was the purpose of it - every evening people will take strolls up and down, so you can meet your acquaintances and I remember my father stopping every 10 or so meters to talk to someone, my point being Bulgarians did enjoy "bumping into people you did not intend to bump into" very much!

    So, I'd like to give you a bit of advice if you plan on visiting again because I saw Oskar drinking from a park fountain. If you ever find yourself somewhere that is not Southwestern Bulgaria (that includes Sofia), especially in Varna, please, please DO NOT drink any tap water or from water fountains, unless you want kidney stones.

    There are lot of international brands in Bulgaria, but most can be found inside shopping malls not on shopping street. Happy pride month 🏳️‍🌈😍

      Pride month? In Bulgaria LGBT is NOT welcome and acceptable!

    Guys, you are 80km from Greece, and you keep talking about eastern Europe. I think it is more right to say Slavic country. Specially Plovdiv is very Mediterranean.

      This is how everyone from thr West perceive Bulgaria. Cyrillic and brutalist architecture are the signature sign of Eastern Europe.

    Oscar, being short is a bloody good weapon! Just becuase Dan is like a Giraffe does not mean that people like us (under 1,70 cm) are hobbits.
