I live in the US but have been to Sofia probably 10 times, my first time in 1991, but not since 2009.I have many friends there and I love the nation of Bulgaria and the city of Sofia. I look forward to the time I am able to visit once again. I love the food and the aroma of chubritsa in all of the homes. Last time I was there I bought a large quantity to bring back to the US! Thanks for the tour, it has rekindled warm memories.

Hey David, I’m so glad to hear that your time In Sofia!! 🥰 I don’t think I’ve ever met a foreigner that has been so many times to Bulgaria. I suggest you visiting again if you have the chance because the city has changed significantly since 2009. I moved abroad in 2015 and every time I go back, I’m surprised of many things have changed (mostly positively)

      @huskytail Před 4 měsíci +1

The people of Sofia can go ski with the public transport getting them right at the lift. Life is not fair 😆 We in Plovdiv had to take much longer bus/car trips to the Rhodope mountains as the resorts were pretty far from the city. I don't know another capital in Europe where you can wake up a Saturday, take the tram or bus and go to ski like that or in the summer, go for walks/hikes in the forests of a mountain like Vitosha 😍
Quality of life in Sofia is something special, really.

Visited Sofia about 12 years ago 2010. Had a bucket list to visit all european cities on a budget.
Had a flight for 30 euros return from London winter time I think early January, it was --20 C
when I arrived--beware travellers from UK it can get much colder in Bulgaria but the snow is much
better than London nice fluffy and powdery as oppose to icy, damp and slushy in UK.
Most restaurants, cafes had outside shelters with heating very cosy so no problems :)
Lots of interesting buildings old and new, quite a contrast not unpleasant to see old things
mixed with old soviet concrete social housing blocks very different but very cool :)
Contrary to some comments did not find Bulgarian people unfriendly quite the opposite.
I think an important thing to mention Bulgarian people shake their head for yes and nod for no
99% of people nod for yes and shake for no-----body language is very important--the guy at
my hotel reception one night shook his head at me-I thought what have I done wrong-but of
course he was being agreeable and welcoming :)
Do think in general Health and safety could be improved--but reflecting on 12 years ago
probably is good now Bulgaria is in EU. Did travell by bus in a blizzard to Plovdiv scary stuff.
I am going on Holiday this month to Bulgaria starting in Sofia no set plan although will
visit Varna--can you reccomend a town within 1 hr of Sofia to see some traditional things??
I am looking forward to my next visit to Bulgaria as am not on a budget and have more time to explore and expand on my last very interesting pleasant trip :)

have been there, regardless of the extreme poverty, the city is quite good, the first time I went was in 1988 and the people were dressed in very poor clothes and I was impressed by how kind the people were even though they often collected cigarette butts from the street while many people were waiting in lines to get meat with food stamps while they didn't have sanitary napkins for women, but cotton and instead of toilet paper, they had pieces, strips of newspapers but should be much better now.

I liked Sofia, though have only seen the main central bits. Some interesting areas to walk around. Will have to go again for sure, as well as other places like Plovdiv. Alexander Nevsky cathedral and Serdica are quite impressive. I missed NDK, shame as I love to see that communist brutalist kind of thing (like the University library in Pristina, for example). Was impressed by the history museum in the old mineral baths, nice building too. I liked the central food market but it didn't have much takeaway food, I guess I got spoilt elsewhere for that! Didn't look too much for street food. Found a really nice traditional looking restaurant near our hotel, with a huge menu, we liked it so much we visited it twice. Just looked it up, think it's Mehana Mamin Kolyo. And I had some nice squid on the main bar street, I'm sure you know where I mean, the very modern one.

Austria is not eastern Europe. It is One of the richest country per capita. Economically it is definitely a western Europe and today when some speak about Eastern Europe he mean a post communist Europe the former eastern bloc and Austria wasn’t communist. Austria has strong culture ties on Czechia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Transylvania, Vojvodina and south Poland because they were part of Austrian Empire later Austria-Hungary but that doesn’t make Austria an Eastern European country.
