In Evil Dead Rise, a reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. We're breaking down the latest installment in the series, including how it connects back to earlier entries, as well as explaining the ending that leaves things open for a number of sequels.

On the 2nd watch I noticed Ellie wasn’t doing laundry…SHE WAS MOVING ON and had her ex’s clothes in the box to be thrown out. Which makes it much sadder to think her biggest character development gets perverse by the possession
I noticed this too on my second watch. She found his shoes under the chair when cleaning up the earthquake mess which then prompts her to open that closest. That piled on top of how visibly upset she is while packing and taking that stuff down to the car adds a really sad edge to that whole scene.
I noticed that too. Why would she do laundry after an earthquake anyway? Lol
See, insights like this is why I feel this dude's serious should be called "Plot Summarized" instead of "Ending Explained." Good catch.
I like the way that the possession only fully takes place when they puke. It's almost like their soul is being PHYSICALLY expelled from their body-
Their like spiders, infect you by possession and then it's like the possession itself rots or liquefies your insides or your soul kinda like a spider's venom does so on an insect.
@@thekerosenewolf5066 pretty much.
Omg I was thinking the same thing there throwing up there souls 😭
Ectoplasm.
Nice detail! Get that soul out of there.
Just want to point out, Beths injury in the hand Didn't infect her because ellie didn't get any bodily fluids on it. Bridgettes got infected from the tattoo gun because Ellie used it on her face before using it on bridgettes.
I think Bridgette got infected from Ellie's tongue licking actually, even if it was cut short.
@@xen0bia Her tongue never got close to her face but she did use her blood as ink on bridgette. If you watch it again youll notice it.
@@Horrorfoley22 Eh, whatever, these possessions are never consistent anyway. Beth's hand should have gotten infected about a million times throughout this movie, but doesn't, because plot armor.
@Harley
Yup.
Same thing I said.
I've seen everything in the 'Dead' franchise that's my theory as well.
The demons have to cause injury before they can get their evil into you.
They either cause your physical death or the death of your sanity.
Everyone that survives a Deadite plague ends up with a few screws loosened.
Facts
The film was sadder to me than horror. Watching a mother, going thru tough times already, suffer along with her children, was sad as s#@t.
Can confirm, I was the evil dead
And the deadbeat dad looks like a genius for leaving when he did. They should bring him into the story in the sequel, ofc he dies heroically somehow, while getting SOME redemption. But the demon uses his dead kids voices to taunt him the whole time. I unno I'm just spit balling.
the morale was all fooked in this movie.
The lazy sister survives after killing/putting in danger her sister, niece and nephew...
If I want sad stories without morale, real life is there to provide plenty enough. ^^
That's what deadites like chaos and suffering
lmao 🤣😂🤣😂
A small but HIGHLY significant detail was when Elle cooked the eggs. One of them was red like it was blood. In a lot of spiritual ways to test if there is bad ‘energy’ or evil spirits was to crack an egg to see if it had red in it. So this detail in the move was such a great thing to show that the Deadite was fully there.
I also thought it alluded to the fact that Beth was pregnant and how the Deadite Ellie wanted to kill the baby too. Because redness in the egg indicates it was fertilized and a zygote was forming inside.
@@hisroyalfatness8430blood in an egg is just a broken vessel and not because it was fertilized. There are many causes and, while unsightly, it's completely normal and safe to consume.
Another great detail that showed the deadite was fully there was when she started brutally attacking her own family 🧠💯
With each movie the Deadites just keep getting meaner. Like, they were always evil, duh, but they just keep getting more and more mean spirited. This movie was brutal and when I was in the theaters all I could think about the deadites were "damn, that was rude and unnessecary." I loved this movie so much.
Yeah, Deadites seem to be the rudest demons in all universe. 😭😭
I think it’s because the first 2 movies were meant to be more campy horror because of the year of release while everything after is showing just how terrifying and evil the deadites are
Deadites literally go out of their way just to make it worse for their victims. Think they’re fuelled with more like a mix of sadism and showmanship.
🤣🤣🤣
I just wonder how Jessica was able to sleep through the stairwell collapsing, several shotgun blasts, screaming, the elevator crashing, a chainsaw, and a mass of people being fed into a wood chipper.
I think it’s only happening on that floor so it’s like stuck on that floor and the evil in this movie knows no defeat because it’s pure evil yk
Ambien? That crap is like a coma in a bottle.
Well I didn’t see the movie but didn’t the clock stopping when the mother was possessed like it created a pocket dimension that only the floor was affected?
The wood chipper was all the way in the garage, but I agree with the rest
It's a movie.
This one was kinda sad. The others are all funny and you feel the people that get killed kindaaaaaa deserved it, at least a little. You feel less sympathetic for them and just go "Whooooo woaw that was gruesome!" and laugh.
But this was an innocent family with a small child and a broken home on the verge of eviction. It's so set up to feel so much dread that you know what's going to happen to these people and that these young kids are going to gruesomely die.
lmao 😂🤣😂🤣
That was only in the 2013 remake where it felt that others actually deserved it. In other mainly the Bruce trilogy , it was purely accidental that he played the recording so no one deserved it in those movies since Ash after the first recording he listens to it using a headphone showing he knew something was off.
Like with the moronic crew from Covenant who couldn't figure out they were in danger even if someone literally waved a redflag infront of their eyes .
In the 2013 remake they literally fking wrote a warning on the main page not to read the words out loud and what do they do , Eric read it out loud so only in that movie the cast actually deserved it.
The remake and this movie have not been humorous because that is the actual tone the movie was supposed to be set in. Ash v Evil Dead captured the wacky side of the franchise well and I like that the remakes are more...serious if you will.
@@ak-ub1ym One person accidentally read the book meant the entire cast deserved it, sure buddy.
@@justarandomdouchebag5942 the house's basement has clear signs of struggle and fire trials with the corpse left there.
What do u think a sane person or their friends who brought their sister for detox should do? U tell me genius.
1) stay the night in creepy cabin with clear sign of struggles and something weird going is present
Or
2) GTFO out of the house ASAP and from afar either burn the place down to the ground , and deal with the detox crap later in a safe area.
So even after that u do decide to stay the night but decide to the explore the place & amidst all that a book that is wrapped in black tarp bound with spiked iron chain clearly saying showing it is not to be read cause the summoning clearly works cause u are speaking the words which is highlighted , so if u do decide to read it.
A) take precaution by reading it within ur mind and not out loud cause in Evil dead 1 after they played the tape accidentally , Ash uses a pair of earphones to listen to it so not making more trouble.
Or
B) read the fking passage out loud despite warning then they do deserve what got in the Movie.
So yea would say they deserved it when they not only decided to stay in that place despite the obvious signs that no animal was there in the jungle which only happens if there is something wrong with the place.
Something I noticed with Bridgette and the tattoo needle is that Elle puts it into her check first, and then puts it into Bridgette’s cheek. I think she pulled blood out of her cheek and essentially tattooed Bridgette with the Deadite blood
But what about when Bridgette uses the cheese grater on Beth’s leg, and then later on Beth is in the elevator and it fills with blood?
Or she and the little girl get absolutely soaked in deadite blood. So they aren’t infected with it?
Wasn't it common sense 😕
@@hisroyalfatness8430 basically it has to be from the main source. If it's not from the source or from an infected, they won't get affected. Basic 101 in the horror genre.

Yessss
There were 3 made. But one was more powerful than the other 2. Not trying to sound smart or anything but did you watch the 3rd Evil dead from back in the day? It pretty much shows the 3 books. And I'm sure this one just stayed in the same spot for hundreds of years until someone discovered it and maybe along wuth the other one.
I'm wondering the same thing because apparently it can't be stopped by somehow before the kid brought it to life.. it was stopped. So I'm confused a bit
Loved this movie, it really got you to care about the family really quickly and i felt horrible that this happened to them. That hallway scene was so good too.
Bro this movie was ass. The characters were flat and one dimensional.
This family was already full of demons before the book ever got involved. So many mental illness red flags.
Girl changing her name to "Danny" and calling herself a boy. Her sister cutting the heads off dolls. Post-wall Mom covered in tattoos and dying her hair different colors. The book didn't corrupt them. They were already there.
I didn’t care about them at all. The family was another woke/gen z stereotype. Took me out of it immediately. And I’m from gen z myself.

I heard so much about a cheese grater before seeing this movie and honestly the glass swallowing was so much worse. Literally gave me chills.
I’m NGL, I really loved this movie. It was very dreadful and nightmarish. The sound mixing was creepy and I loved the performances from all the cast. Saw it twice in theaters!
this was a damn near perfect review imo
Oh good, I’m really glad you didn’t lie. Don’t know what we would’ve done if you lied about liking the movie!
@@TheSCPStudio ok
The sound engineering was top class. It sucks that the Academy doesn’t typically recognize the horror genre. But if they did this should win for sound and mixing, the scene where Danny plays the record was truly brilliant sound wise. I even think they experimented with some low frequencies because I felt sick to my stomach during that scene. So good
I honestly enjoyed this evil dead movie. It was a nice breath of fresh air changing up the plot and character dynamics. I love how they ended it with the demon still running rampant. I hope the next time they make another evil dead, they continue this universe more.
Something that I’ve noticed about horror films lately is the casting. As beautiful as Ellie is , there is jjst something creepy about her. Same thing with the dad in the Insidious movie. In insidious 2 , the dad being possessed by Parker crane is so miraculous how his face completely changes, like yea some makeup can do the trick but that creepy lifeless smile was just Chef’s kiss. And Ellie’s facial bone structure just added to that creepy possessed looked she needed after being effected by the readings of the record. It’s just a testament to the intention of the pre-production into production.
You're right, I thought she always had a creepy factor. Even in the Vikings series.
Still a pretty woman, but there is definitely something about her.
Finally a horror film that actually has a bit of bite to it, great visual effects and story. 8.5/10

It was nice and refreshing to watch an evil dead movie where you actually care about all the characters. I feel this did what 2013 Evil Dead wanted to do. I get why people are bummed out because this poor family get obliteratded but from an emotional standpoint it makes for effective horror. When the first kid got infected i was genuinely shocked. And the blob monster at the end has a bit of grotesque symbolism in it. I also liked that there was a fleeting moment when the mom tried to fight the demon knowing it would infect her kids. The 2013 film tried to do this and, while that film had some interesting ideas (a junkie going through withdrawal and being possessed was a great angle), the emotional moments between Mia and her brother didnt hit as hard here. I didnt buy them as brother and sister, but immediately was invested with the family in this movie, especially when the mom was worried right after the "quake"
@@Weyland_Punaniit’s not the shock horror aspect so much as we feel for the family, it’s more effective horror because we feel for the people it’s happening to. We all have some form of family/ know someone or are someone from a broken home which makes the characters more relatable. I feel like it makes the impact greater. It’s not done for shock value in my opinion, if it were shock value they could have just stuck w the plot line of the 2 girls from the beginning. I like the idea of a horror franchise touching on f*cked up family.

Favorite movie this year! I think this does a good job of not only fitting in the evil dead universe but uplifting the original movies. Nothing re-contextualizes the badassery of Bruce Campbell than seeing what a normal, non-chosen one looks like when trying to survive against the horrors of the necronomicon.
I noticed (could be wrong) that the passege in Wuthering Heights was exactly how the mother was possessed in the elevator... "Intense horror... draw back her arm..." The kids attack their baby sister playfully together and then attack her after the possessions... It was a lot of foreshadowing in this movie.
I absolutely loved this movie. The visual of Bridgette eating the wine glass was by far my favorite.

I want an Evil Dead movie every 3-4 years like Bruce and Raimi have insinuated
I'd love to see the priest's story as a movie. It would be super cool to see a flash back. Also I hope they bring all the surviving characters together to fight the evil
It’d be sick seeing Mia, Beth, Cassie, Kelly, and Pablo setting up for one final showdown with evil. We know Ash overslept so it could be a continuation of everything. Like we pick up after the show with Kelly and Pablo picking up leads or visions in Pablo’s case leading to everyone else gathering a small army and setting up for a wage on evil itself. Good vs Evil.
More interesting film for sure than these vapid boreville characters that aren't even relatable or realistic.
So it's safe to say the next Evil Dead will have Jessica drive back to the building get the book and start spreading the evil in the streets of LA meanwhile Beth is arrested and later teams up with a detective in order to stop the Evil from spreading.
It writes itself at this point.
One thing I've always felt compelled to point out in Evil Dead plot analyses is the fact that the book wasn't called Necronomicon ex Mortis until Evil Dead 2. in the original The Evil Dead Professor Knowby called it Naturom Demonto
"Mommy's sleeping with the maggots" is my favorite line in the movie. After I heard that, I had to continue watching it.
I’ve watched this channel since the beginning years and years ago and Chris still puts the same effort and passion into his videos and I love it so much. After all these years it still comforts me and makes me happy ❤ these videos are always fire
yessss I have been waiting for this channel to cover this movie! all the other explainations for this movie were not very great. love your work man keep it up
Alyssa Sutherland was absolutely phenomenal in this movie she played the part perfectly
I get how Bridge got infected with tattoo needle; mom jabs herself first, infecting the needle thus she infects Bridge. With Beth, it was just a shard of mirror, it wasn't infected...the same happened with Bridge and Danny, used the knife that was infected when she was jabbed.....at least that's how I figured it out. So there is a blood connection element to the infection...
The original movies imply that you must be injured by a deadite to become possessed. Cheryl stabbing Linda with the pencil for instance. So it doesn't matter if you get demon blood in you though that does help, you just have to be attacked and substantially injured by them.
it doesn't really matter if it's body fluids anymore. At the end the girl didn't even touch the blood yet she was possessed.

18:38 Had to think on that as Ash’s right hand is the one that was cut off and turned to a chainsaw. Then remembered his left hand got bitten in Army of Darkness and 2013, both girls’ left hands got severely screwed over.

It's just now been 2 weeks since foundflix uploaded. He usually does every Sunday but once in a while I guess he takes a break and he misses a Sunday.
The concept of the good book was surprisingly used a few times in the franchise outside of the film. Its also referenced in the Telltale game, Poker Night, in a story that Ash told of the good book coming in the form of a woman who unknowingly knew what she truly was. The story was one of tragedy of his most recent heartbreak at the time including a ring that he was going to give her as a proposal. This was also referenced again in the Dynamite Entertainment Army of Darkness comics about the multiple books existing in different places around the world, even including passages of Jack The Ripper himself being one of the chosen ones. The comic book series does surprisingly add on a much bigger lore to the series, including another series that focuses specifically on Evil Dead 2 and the events afterwards when our ash travels to medieval England and essentially a blood clone version of him having adventures back in the modern day.

Man, I love this series. So glad they're breathing new life into it.
Idk why but “mommy's with the maggots now and I will swallow your soul“ is so funny to me.
The "Do it for mom and dad" while ellie is talking to the little girl is hysterical to me lmaooo there was no dad at that moment
Hell yeah was wondering if you would cover this one!
Imagine a horror movie that is full of sensible people. Where everyone almost unchains the ultimate evi over in different scenarios and ways but stops at the right time. Doesn't read it out loud. Doesn't open the puzzle box. Doesn't remember a dream demon, or doesn't go to a camp where people died. And it ends just before anyone could fuck it up.
If the characters in this film had any sense they wouldn't have gone and explored the hole that opened immediately following an earthquake. These people live in a place that has likely had them weather a number of small ones so they'd know about aftershocks and how bad an idea trying to enter a cavity revealed by one is.
@@JapaneseanimeguySomeone had to do it to make another film.
The 2013 movie was only movie that the Deadites were summoned by someone reading directly from the book. The first two were the exact same way as this one, a recording being played. And in Army of Darkness it's because Ash removed the book without saying the incantation correctly.
I do think first reboot was better as a sort of standalone horror one off, but I’m more interested in where Rise’s story goes. Like I want a prequel about the dudes who found the book and a sequel following Ash coming across a deadite situation and beth just happens to be there too being a badass mom
I would love a sequel to Rise that follows the story of the girl from the intro and ending being possessed.

I always hate how the antagonists kill background characters in a matter of seconds, but play with their food for minutes with the main characters.
