      Been looking at these campers, they look nice. I have a 2018 F250 Superduty with a longbed. Theres a 90gallon fuel cell in the bed directly behing the cab. Fuel cell takes up 30" of the first part of the longbed. Will this camper still work, ie for the camper tiedowns and the space remaining in the bed?

    Joe, you should suggest to FWC (you have clout with them:) to replace their open J hook turnbuckles (standard on the slide-in models) with something like 5/16" x 4-1/2" Stainless Steel Jaw x Jaw Turnbuckles for their slide-in models. If you watch Sir Williams on FWC CZcams site, you will see the open J hooks detach and even bend/fail. If you go to the CZcams channel
    SUV RVing, and to his vid titled "Touring an Amazingly Spacious Small Pop-Up Truck Camper! (Four-Wheel Campers Tour)," the owner of the Fleet model experienced failures with his turnbuckles and replaced them with the Jaw x Jaw turnbuckles. Go to the 29 min. point for a visual of his solution. I didn't include links as I don't know if you allow them. I asked the owner about his attachment system and this is some of his reply:
    "The OEM turnbuckles from FWC were just open ALUMINUM J hook design ones. A little shift around and the J hook would just drop off. Also I hit some rough off road areas and the aluminum threads stripped together and I couldn’t get the turnbuckle to turn or tighten. So they lasted about 3 months! What you saw was 5/16" x 4-1/2" Stainless Steel Jaw x Jaw Turnbuckles, I replaced the Jaw threaded through pins with quick pin disconnects. I used 4 Koch 3/8” Quick Links 1,980 lb WLL on the steel hold down straps on the bed to get the turnbuckle length to come out right. No more problems now!!"

    Hi Joe, excellent walk through! I have one of these on order and I intend on sliding the camper into a new Ford150 hybrid with the 72KW built in generator. I’m excited at the possibility of plugging the camper into my onboard generator for all the power I need for as long as I’ve got fuel in the truck. The service manager at four wheel campers seems to be too overwhelmed with work to be able to accurately tell me if this electrical hook up would be compatible. I wonder what your thoughts about this would be? Thanks, Norm

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  Před 3 lety

      Hi Norm - from what I can read, it seems like it would work. Many people use 1 and 2 kw generators for their camper so there’s more than enough power - but without seeing or using it I can’t say for sure. Do know that there is a connection from the truck battery/alternator to charge the camper. I don’t know what happens if you’re getting 12v power from the truck and 120v power from the generator. It’s a new system so it will be hard to get any definite answers before someone tries it.

    • @normwitt5882
      @normwitt5882 Před 3 lety

      @@Weretherussos Thanks Joe, the battery charging system is where the four wheels camper service manager has concerns but too busy to check it out. I really don’t know what my next step should be. My new truck won’t be delivered for another couple of months and my camper isn’t due for delivery until first of June so I’ve got some time. Maybe between now and then someone will publish a promo on this hybrid powering and successfully charging a camper or some other RV without any damage. Excited to find out because the prospect of being plugged in wherever you go would be freaking awesome! Thanks, Norm

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  Před 3 lety

      So the question to ask your sales person is if the camper battery system could be damaged if you’re plugged into shore power while running the engine. If so, you can either disconnect the line back from the truck battery OR add in a cut off switch to turn the power from the truck alternator off when you’re running the generator.
      I don’t see why you won’t be able to charge the camper off the trucks generator especially if the literature I saw is mentioning running welders, etc off it. Just DO NOT plug into the 30amp 240v outlet as the 30 amp plug on the FWC (and all RVs) is 120v. Also, I saw that the charging station is in the bed of the truck - if so, are there other outlets if you won’t be able to reach the outlets in the bed with the camper on?

    • @normwitt5882
      @normwitt5882 Před 3 lety

      @@Weretherussos I’ve gotten more valuable information from you than anyone else. Thank you! I will check on shore line plugged in when the truck is running question. All of the plug-in connections are in the back of the bed, however, my thinking is that FWC is no wider than the tailgate opening which gives some room for connecting. Also I could have a connecting shore line special made to fit the tight arrangements. What most surprised me was your information on the 30 amp 240v plug. That is exactly where I would have plugged in the FWC. My goal would be to run the AC, toaster, coffee pot when the wife’s using her hair dryer and curling iron, just kidding, not. When you pull into a camp ground and plug your shore line into the 30amp plug instead of the 120 plug I thought that is what give you all that extra power. If you have the time and interest, run a you tube search on the F150 hybrid and watch the one where they are using the truck plugged into two large living quarters horses trailers. They seam to be using the same style shore line cords with an adapter into the 30amp 240v plug. What I don’t know is weather they toasted the battery chargers on these two units or not. They did not report any problems. Thanks, Norm

      Norm the 30 amp hook up at a campground is 120v, just like the household 15 or 20 amp 120v plug. The 240 and 120 plugs look the same and many people have fried their campers plugging into a 240 outlet for a dryer. That said, I don’t see why you can’t charge off the 20amp household plug - just get an adapter for the 30amp (Our camper came with one).
      That said, I found the test you referenced. In the article, they say that they’re powering two trailers, each being 120v from the 30amp 240v plug off the truck. I don’t know how they’re doing this without a converter in-line to bring the voltage down to 120 ( maybe they have one).
      My concern here is that your camper is going to be situated directly above the exhaust for the truck and those fumes are going to be coming into the camper, especially when you have the fan running.

    Does anyone have experience with the durability and
    longevity of the pop up fabric?
    Replacement costs?
    Even properly maintained it seems to me the camper would outlast the fabric many times over.
    Thanks.

      Well taken care of the fabric lasts for many years. You’d have to call Four Wheel Campers to ask about the cost of replacement.

    Does anybody know,..Does this have to be licenced separately from the vehicles like here In Washington state for regular hard sided truck campers???Also, do you have to install tie-downs and air-bags??

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  Před rokem +1

      Licensing all depends on your state. Yes, tie downs are required and are installed by the camper dealer. Airbags are dependent on the truck. We didn’t need them but some do.

    What- No head? Big omission. Put a composting toilet under the settee, and you've got a truly functional camper. At a minimum, provide space for a pota-potti - or at least Homer bucket and a pee jar,

      The factory hasn't said - but it's quite a bit. All aluminum welded frame. Best course would be to ask the manufacturer.

    How tall is your setup with the camper mounted?

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I don’t have an exact measurement but around 7.5 feet. It also depends on the truck. I believe four wheel campers has dimensions on their website so you can measure from your truck bed and get a good idea of how tall it will be on your truck
