  • Soooooo.... My first vlog in the Class 1 (C+E) truck on my own. I had a mentor for my first actual day, he did one run with me then followed me in his truck for the day. It went well & is still going well... I'm enjoying it!
Loads more to come from me :) Hope you enjoy!

Best tip I was given for reversing was, the most important part of your reverse is done going forwards. If you line yourself up right at the start going backwards is easy ;)

Class 1 reversing on lessons is a start of a type of reverse we all learn day by day everyday we just have to hope we get better and better with time but experience is best when shared I have been doing this job for 15 years and I'm still learning and happy to share with anyone who asks to make them more safe and the tricks of the trade

I passed my class 1 in November and watching you now is exactly how I felt and what I went through. First day I had a blindside onto a loading bay next to a wall. It took me nearly 15 minutes to complete it and I almost went back to class 2 there and then. Still in class 1 and loving it, reversing is still not perfect but improving. You will get there.
A tip: As you seem to have the same truck as me, use the crawler gear when reversing, helps a lot to start with.

Don’t stress pal, reversing comes with time. My first full time class 1 job after passing was on a bulk tipper and you should see some of the farms I’ve been in and out of. All I can say is I found it easier to stick the head out of the window and watch the back of the trailer. When you think you’re just about there, start correcting your steering to get straight. Have patience, it’ll come!!! 😀😀😀

Hi I just found your Handel on you tube,I was a class 1 tipper driver from November 1989- end of August 2011,I still remember my first day tipping at Walton-le-dale near Preston then went to Speke near Liverpool airport for a load of rice bran back to an animal feed mill near where I live in North Yorkshire.
Trust me everything will get better the more you do it,I've taken things out of quarries all over he UK including quarries in the middle of nowhere in South Wales, with out sounding a big head I have take stuff all over the UK.
The best advice that I was given when I started was to have faith in your self and what did God give you a mouth for use it.
The best thing you will ever do is ask people for directions, information and help.

Deady 2012 i learnt to drive in an ERF4x2 with a twin splitter box,,I've also driven two Volvo's,first was an ex shop delivery fm12 380 6x2 which went very well,it still had the plug on the back of the unit for lifting the floors up and down and the second was an ex Hastings unit from Hastings in Cumbria that was a 6x2 midlift Volvo globetrotter FH12 460 also went well, most days it would do 7+ mpg,if you ever need any help with anything and you think I can help you please ask as I'll be more than happy to help.
I don't know if you've been told yet but if your tipping some where you never been before always get out and make sure it's good firm-hard level ground to tip on and the slightest sign your tipper isn't going up right stop and drop it down and find some where level, don't let any one tell you where to tip if it's not safe to do so,a tipper not tipping straight will soon tip over and then you have to do the explaining and your boss will tell you it's your responsibility to make sure every thing is right before you tip,I'm telling you what was told to me when I started by my dad who had been a tipper driver since he was 21,my dad been a tipper driver 26yrs when I started and it was him I worked for for 22yrs,I've never tipped one over and I've never Jack knifed a wagon, yes I've had accidents and hit things but it's all part of the learning curve of life

Hi Deady, just a piece of advice when I i started learning to reverse artics i was told never ask someone to do it for you as you'll never learn !! Get a experience driver to show you from outside ie how to turn and so on then you'll get the feel of the way the trailer goes, hope this helps.

So chuffed for you mate, when it comes to reversing remember that, the bigger the trailer the slower it moves, also move the steering wheel little and often so you can gauge where your rear end is, the only way you’ll get better is to keep at it, keep up the good work mate

Well done Gareth for not just keeping in your comfort zone in Class 2 and diving straight into Class 1. You might not realise it mate but that inspires others. Your channel is a down to earth, how it is learning from the start which in my opinion takes guts especially sharing it with those who are in a similar situation. Balls to the haters mate and you've already shown you've plenty of balls and arnt frightened to jump in at the deep end. Maybe If you get some spare time in the yard just practice yourself on your own with some cones to get your confidence up if it really is bothering you but it looks like the job you have is perfect to practice on the job. Keep going my friend and youll be fine. Be safe Gareth

I starting driving class 1's 28 years ago, I started out on tippers doing weekend work. The company said I will put someone with you for the first few weeks until you're confident, I went out with someone for one trip then he went home, he said take it if you want to do some more so I thought sod it I will! Best advise for reversing is put a bit on take a bit off, you will soon learn when to take the lock off just easier if done is small steps. It will soon become second nature so dont worry. You will cock up at times, we all do, just learn from it, theres many a time I've said "I wont do that again!"

Top tip with bulkers or any trailer where they max you out using a weighbridge - fuel up for the run before going into to the place, Don’t load with an empty fuel tank. If they max you out and you then drive up the road and derve up for a long run, that’s when you creep over ha. You’ll get the reversing, I spent a few weeks utterly baffled by it then it clicked. Haven’t driven an HGV for 16 years then had to go back to it a few years ago briefly. Was dreading the reversing, but it clicks again. Like anything practice. Just take your time. I used to practice in quiet carparks and yards if I had drive time and duty left on my card before having a night out 😂

Deedy, don't worry so much when there isn't anything visual to look at, as long as unloading where they expect to unload then shouldn't be too much of a problem. my main tip for you would be when you got a white line is drive passed until the 5th wheel is in line with the white line. then turn full lock until the trailer is about 45 degrees, then turn full lock back so the cab is 90 degrees with the bay or whatever, and the trailer is at a 45 degree angle with the centre trailer wheels. and follow the centre wheels as the other wheels will jump and skip, but will allow you to know when to straighten, or how much more or less to turn. the other trick is always try to keep the reversing to the driver side while starting out. hense why they teach you driverside reversing on the driving test. it isn't as hard to do the reverse to the left out of the designated area as you know. but the final box is the most restrictive on the drivers side and right turn. as for reversing straight there is 1 in 360 chance of getting it right, and about 90 or so of that you really don't want to be. which is the cab meeting the trailer. the trailer will keep turning unless you get that 1 degree, and even then could be having to steer agian within 0.5 mile. but as for knowing when to straighten etc. then that just comes with experience. but if you do the first part roughly like I say, then the white line will show you between all the wheels. like how close is the front trailer tires compaired to the rear trailer tires, when close enough to straight then you have gone a bit too far back before straightening the truck. so about 10 degrees with the trailer wheels start straightening the whole vehicle.

    • @michaelthomas3646
      @michaelthomas3646 Před 4 lety

that is assuming that the yard or whatever is long enough for the trailer to go length ways, and the reason for straightening at around 10 degrees is so you are pushing the trailer into the gap so the cab has the room to straighten up. if not enough room then you have to improvise by using more forward passed the gap you want, and turning sooner rather than later.

If you need to go back in a straight line, watch how much trailer side you can see in each mirror and whenever you see a difference pull the wheel to the corresponding side. If you see more right side then right hand down, left side, left hand down. Like anything, you have to think about it to start with but it won't be long before you don't even think about it.

A lot of lads make it look very easy reversing and I thought I’m never going to be able to do it, 5 months on and I am getting there, it becomes second nature when you do it everyday .I’m the youngest one at my work and the most common observation is that new drivers put far too much lock on. You're spot on that people have gotta learn and all those out there that would say different are completely ignorant to the reality in manoeuvring a class 1 vehicle. Experienced Drivers do mes up with reversing. Even I have the odd reverse I mess up. When i start C1 I was wowed about the revers too, But the biggest advice I had, is to think you are stood in the direction you are reversing and to get use to how you’re traller handles Loded and unloaded. It is hard to explain but it will click just be steady and try not to other think it.

All i want to say is already covered in the various comments here, so welcome to the world of tippers. Good luck and take care and lookout for overhead and overhanging obstructions when tipping. If you do hit an electric line remember never touch the ground and the wagon at the same time, either stay inside or jump clear. Great video Deady.

Hello buddy great to see you passed Class 1, I just got through my Class 2 at 51! I build road sweepers and now have the big airport sweepers to build and test them at the Top Gear track in Dunsfold. So I now drive them between Dorking and Dunsfold. I’m thinking of doing th C+E just so I have it now the company paid for the rigid.

nice one. reversing tips try reversing at walking pace slow and steady so you can make small corrections. I have been doing it 4 years and some times do depot to depot trunking and I have the good and bad days. but main job is Iceland store deliveries starting at 8m trailers up to 13.6m.

Seriously underrated comment. I checked out his channel after reading Sam's post and his reversing tutorial is incredible. That man could be huge on CZcams especially with the combined tests coming in soon.
It's one thing memorising how to navigate some cones but a whole different ball game when you have to figure it out yourself in a tight yard that you've never been to before.

I had a Class 1 for 40+ years, it doesn't matter if you have to take a couple of shunts, different trailers react differently, just take your time, and you will start to put them places you never thought you could, good luck, keep the content coming.

  • @Ryan-cd9pm
    @Ryan-cd9pm Před 4 lety

I wouldnt get frustrated with the reversing on your first day, it will come with practice. I've no experience at all in hgv but I do have alot of experience in tractors with large trailers, and I would say what I've learnt is position the trailer where your aiming to go and go straight as possible before you reverse. Keep the wheel straight and go back, only when the trailer starts to turn then you start to steer, but make small adjustments like 1/2 turns or 1/4 turns so you don't end up over compensating it. I see alot of people turn before they even start reversing, and they only end up with a kink in there straight line they created then totally over compensate and ended zig zagging everywhere to reverse where they need. Obviously on a 5th wheel your pivot point will be different but I use that principle with every trailer I use whether tractor or pickup. You'll get used to it before long!

Don’t worry about reversing it’ll get better 100% the more you do it the better you’ll get. I still struggle too lol. I watch Ned too 😂😂😂 he’s mad I love him. You’re right when you pass they teach you the basics of reversing that’s about it the rest is up to you. The company I trained with made a bay with cones for me to practice in I can get into a bay with 1 shunt now.
I promise you you will be reversing one handed like a pro in no time. Small adjustments it’s easier trust me even when going in a strait line 👍👍

Deady, them bays are the perfect place for trying that jackknife reverse I told you about, loads of room to play with, read it again it works, turn trailer right hand down till you can see through passenger window, point trailer then bring cab back, one thing! if you go to fast it will not work for anyone!

@@Deady2012 Deady, A tip I used for a long time, if you gotta go blind and you have the room, jackknife the unit so you can see through the passenger window slowly turn the tail into the gap don't over steer, keep going back while getting parallel to what ever you have , wall fence kerb when it is stop for a second get ready to wiz the cab back in line with the trailer, slowly crawl back but turn wheel fast way hay back on two mirrors, it does work!

good luck going forward dude :)

My tip for that Bay 7 reverse would be not to blind it. There's plenty of room to drive parallel to it and then swing yourself round until your arse end is pointing at the bay. It's then just a straight reverse back. :)

Just a little tip when parked in a lay-by I always used to turn the front wheels to the left and if possible put the near side wheel on the footpath, then if a numpty should sideswipe you he will only get the trailer and not you 😎

Don't worry about the reverse, it will come, I passed the reverse on the test, more by luck than judgement. My first bay reverse took 20 minutes, luckily through the agency I got in with a local company and the other drivers were really great, helped me every step of the way. The main things are, take your time, don't stress, you'll make it worse, a bit of lock on, a bit of lock off. Watch the wheels, they tell you what's happening. Oh and have fun 😊😊👍👍

  • @JVerschueren

The thing that took me the longest to get my head around once I passed my car test and then, later, pulling a caravan is that the whole thing pivots around the rearmost axle of the combination (actually, for the trailer you're pulling here, it would be the middle one of the three).
That's the bit you're going to be steering and that's the bit you need to put where you want to go. Everything else is just thinking ahead how you're going to position yourself, so as not to hit anything with the rest of the thing (which, obviously, you'll have to constantly verify during the manouver).
What people are saying is actually really good advice. Take it slow, pop it in a crawler gear (in the army we used terrain gears for practising reversing). You see, reversing an artic is a bit like balancing a broom on your hand: if you make sudden, fast movements it all gets exaggerated and you end up chasing it, unless you're very, very good.
Edit: 11:47 case in point. Too quick, far to quick... slow down. Experienced people are going to laugh at you for taking 5 stabs at it, not for getting it in one, but slightly slower than they can do it. And do you really think that dozer guy can reverse an artic quicker than you? -what's the rush?
Edit 2: also consider, being epic at reversing will add 0.00- GBP to your paycheck. A friend of mine is a train driver and is epic at hitting stopping marks on the platforms he frequents. He gets paid the same than the guys who can't hit the marks exactly to save their lives.

I don’t know why that is, it seems to just be part of the habit. So i’m going to use crawler reverse from now on so that i can’t go fast. Cheers for your input mate!
