The contribution of Bengal in industrial revolution, the contribution of India in the development of the UK and the British role in man-made famines, poverty creation and how India declined from one of the most prosperous countries to one of the poorest during the British rule and how the British ruined India by dividing it in 1947 when it departed without taking any responsibility for the human beings. However, it is far cry. I have lived in Britain for many years for my education and some years work experience after completing my education. They never accept their defects or any blames, but they always have a defensive attitude.
    Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Bentham are the examples of the British attitude.

What I meant was that while we should always do the right thing and expect others to do the same, I don't think that revenge or the idea that people who have nothing to do with the actions of those who came before them should be made to "pay". Sometimes, we have to rise above a harmful cycle instead of accidentally becoming a part of it. • @MrPeaceGuy54
      @MrPeaceGuy54 Před rokem

      @@Santanibalak1 I am not denying that horrors were committed during that period, but it is equally true that the Empire as it once was does not exist. The Bretton Woods agreement created an international currency exchange system that only lasted until the 1970s. There is a difference of degrees between the West trying to maintain its supremacy and the ouright subjugation that existed before. Of course, neither is good, but we cannot pretend as if everything is the exact same. I think that we should not forget, but we should forgive. The Gita is about many things. For example:
      'In the Bhagavad-gita (16.3), Lord Krishna declares forgiveness to be a godly quality foundational for liberation and is contrasted with the anger and harshness that characterize the ungodly who stay in bondage.
      In the Srimad Bhagavatam (9.15.40), the sage Jamadagni glorifies forgiveness: “The duty of a transcendentalist is to culture the quality of forgiveness, which is illuminating like the sun. The Supreme Person, Hari, is pleased with those who are forgiving.”'
      -Gokulhouse
      In the Gita, Lord Krishna is willing to let the Pandavas live with only five villages even though they could have conquered the world. The Pandavas could have argued that the final limit was at least a few states, but Lord Krishna went much further than that. Lord Rama sent Lakshman ji to learn valuable lessons from Ravana even though he could have simply left. The basic principle remains the same-one should strive to do good even when others don't always agree with us. We should also remember that the things Lord Krishna and Lord Rama did were during a period in which wars were common. For their time, their actions were unthinkable. Since we live in a different environment, we have to focus more on the Atman of the principle, which, I think, will lead us to a position that is both firm but also accepting and compassionate. In particular, we have to remember that the part does not always represent the whole.

      When I listen to Shashi Tharoor I am reminded of my grandfather's story. A British soldier thrashed him mercilessly cos he dared to take some fruits from the cantonment/ barracks garden. He still had the lash marks on his back. This is was the general attitude of the British towards Indians. My grandpa remembers the club in the town had a board stating " Indians and dogs not allowed". A small sample of the British rule in India. If anyone tells me British rule wad beneficial I wish I could show them my grandpa's wounds.

Do read up about the Bengal famine. I read an article about how people would eat slugs and snails from potholes filled with muddy water or under damp logs. If you get a chance see Satyajit Ray's Ashani Sanket movie about the famine. I have even read the novel on which the movie was based. The characters might be fictional but the circumstances they faced were all factual and well researched.
