It’s not an exaggeration to claim that video games have a penchant for life in post-apocalyptic America. From the ghastly realism of The Last of Us, to the tongue-in-cheek absurdity of Rage, the industry is filled to the brim with experiences that explore what happens to the land of the free after social order collapses. In addition, games like Frostpunk, Mad Max, and a few others have featured memorable post-apocalyptic scenarios in the Anglosphere. Yet when it comes to the rest of the globe, the pickings are often slim.
4A Games’ Metro franchise is an exception to this. A survival-oriented first-person shooter series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels of the same name, the games explore the harshness of life in Moscow after the fires of nuclear war force its inhabitants to take refuge in its metro. And it does so with one of the more hardcore set of mechanics to grace its genre.
For perhaps this reason, a lack of marketing, and a not-insignificant amount of technical issues that afflicted its first wave of releases, the Metro series never managed to become as beloved as some of its peers. Yet through sheer force of will, it grew into a mainstay in the first person shooter genre, thanks to the tireless work of 4A Games, and the support of its passionate fan base.
But in order to fully appreciate what the series has to offer, one must first go back to the past. To the mid-2000s, when 4A’s founders had yet to leave their original outfit, and Glukhovsky’s first novel had only just been published in its home country.
This is the history of Metro 2033.
The History of Metro Part 1.

Hey everyone, as there seems to be some confusion as to how we're approaching our coverage of this series, we're happy to share that we'll be following up this episode with videos about Last Light, Redux and, inevitably, Exodus as well. That's all! For now, we hope you'll enjoy our video about Metro 2033. :)
Oh cool! I was a little confused, but this was great! As a hardcore fan of the series, I'm very interested to see how Exodus will pan out with its controversial decision to move to the Epic store exclusively for at least the first year.
Awesome! Thanks for the crystal clearness. Look forward to chillaxing and hearing that smooth as silk voice tell me bout Metro games.
Great can't wait to see more based on those games. Love your content! Keep it up.
I'm glad to see you guys talking about my favorite game series!
Noice
Dmitry Glukhovsky has a hell of a better attitude towards video games than the Witcher author.
Glukhovsky is an awesome guy!
Sapkowski was openly offered royalties for use of his subject matter, but knew nothing about video games and their popularity outside of Poland, and took an absurdly small, one time payment check instead.
To be fair, gaming was an underground kind of thing up until just 10-15 years ago. Mostly bootleg copies of PC games were sold at flea markets. Poland was still climbing out of decades of Soviet control.
Legally, CDPR didn’t have to give him a dime, but rumors are that they settled out of court. Honestly, Sapkowski has sold WAY MORE books because of the video game, so either way it was a good move. Now the Netflix Witcher series is on the way also.
@@Deeplycloseted435
If it wasnt for the games i probably would have never found out about The Witcher, the author should be happy he got that signal boost.
I love 2033 and Last Light, but Exodus just strayed to far from the books for me. I still finished it on Ranger Hardcore though.
He is a world reporter for RT. And the book is basically a social commentary. Who better to comment on society than people who literally grew up in the shadow of Chernobyl. Seeing as the book was an experiment released for free, I think he saw 4A as a way to help explore ideas.
The Metro Series has by far one of the best OSTs ever made. Every level has it's own unique atmosphere and the music... fits perfectly.
I think it plays the threat of nuclear war better than Fallout in my opinion. The creatures are far more Terrifying and have a interesting feel to them.plus Nazis and Soviets fighting in a Post apocalyptic Subterranean like Warfare is so badass.
I would love for them to pick up the STALKER ip and finish the games
I’ll never forget, I got this game for Christmas in like 2010, I was 14. The first time Miller and I climbed up to the surface in the prologue chapter, hearing the music and seeing the carnage, gave me chills. I just picked up the redux and booted it up again, same scene, same effect.
@1aHamza lol what a joke, metro knocks stalker out cold sorry, idk how anyone can't see it besides maybe bias
For a moment I was afraid that it was 'The rise and fall of Metro series'
lets hope metro survives on consoles until it gets to steam
@@beefstew6512 There will be plenty of people who will buy it on Epic, they will do just fine. I would have too for cheaper but the sudden change to timed exclusivity and that I cant install the Epic launcher (it gets stuck during patching phase) turned me off. Alas, Ill just wait it out until next years Steam release.
If they keep attacking consumers for voicing displeasure at sudden bussiness decisions at the player base's cost, that video might just come sooner than later. Let's hope it won't involve them shooting themselves on the foot and cutting both feet to stop it happening again, i.e. telling people not to buy their games on PC and then never launching on PC again for players doing just that.
Metro will survive even without the PC bucks.
Rare are the people without both a pc and a console, so odds are that sales will not really be affected that much.
i want metro 4, dragons dogma 2 and stalker 2
I wish there were more games like Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R....

Metro 2033 is one of my favourite games. Never had the same feeling playing other games, including Last Light. Metro 2033 immersed me in the situation the protagonist lives in, the cramped stations where people have markets, livestock, workshops, homes, its somewhat depressing. I liked a lot that Artyom is like an actual person, different from other protagonists in games where they dont show opinions, feelings, no family, etc., Artyom just wants to save his home, and it makes the game feel like a movie youre playing on instead of watching. And i found the story very interesting, at first youre desperate to help the station, later youre curious to know what are those strange humanoids with psychic powers, and why are they doing what they are doing.
I never thought that the combat was bad as this video says, what i liked is that you had to manage every resource you had, you couldnt just go buying those shiny weapons vendors had, you needed ammo, first aid kits, filters for the mask, because if you didnt have one of those items you were screwed, and you had to loot everything and everyone, because you were always out of ammo or your mask was damaged in combat or something like that, it truly felt like an underdog scavenger life, everyday just trying to get by with what you had, not like other games where everything is handed to you, when you had to shoot pre war bullets, it felt so bad because you were literally shooting your money and you were gonna need it later on. Amazing game, wish the other games had the same idea, Last Light felt more like a conventional FPS honestly.
2033 really tricked you into feeling that what you did mattered through atmosphere even if it was as linear as it gets. It was a good linear game, could it have been better if it was less linear? It's possible, but it was an excellent linear game.
Imo, Last Light is better than 2033. This is coming from someone who played the redux versions in 2019 for the first time. 2033 did not age well so I'm not sure how I would have felt back in 2010. But Last Light definitely plays better and I liked the story more.
@@DV-ou1yu the original version is a lot different than the Redux and LL. It's also a lot more janky. LL made the mechanics slightly less janky, but also made things like stealth overly simplified. The original didn't have the perfect stealth system, but I liked it for being more tough and not something you can cheese through. At the same time, the throwing knife hitbox was so inconsistent that it made killing armored enemies a strong gamble. The enemies in LL are downright braindead during stealth, and it makes me sad that 4A couldn't find a middle ground
I thought Last Light was better as well.
@@peppermillers8361 The AI in 2033 feel exactly the same as the AI in Last Light from back to back plays. If anything, the map layout in 2033 gave the AI a big advantage which can be easily confused as "tough" lol
I will say that last light is more forgiving when it comes to ammo and health regeneration.
As soon as I heard the end credits theme for the Metro: 2033's good ending, I knew I had my new favourite game of all time. It got to the point in which I even picked up the Acoustic Guitar as a whole new lobby and began reading books for the first time through Dimitry's books.
It's great to see this little set of games receive it's well earned recognition and I long for the day in which, after Exodus, the Metro Trilogy will become it's own icon amongst Singleplayer games. Many thanks from a long-time Metro follower for covering this game!
Little set of games?!

I was just playing this game when i saw the notification
Fair to say, you have good taste.
I just completed like my 5th or 6th overall play through of Metro 2033. I've got the Redux versions and the original versions of the games. They are some of my favorite games of all time.
That's funny because I was just playing metro 2033 as well.
Hamstel95 for real same, just went back to playing 2033 and last light while waiting for exodus to come out.
My interest in the series has certainly returned with the new game coming out so soon. I'm playing 2033 for the first time right now and if I like it I'll give the books a read too
I love your videos. I’ve been reading metro 2035 to get hyped for the new Metro

Oh Metro games, the immersion here is unreal.
Its a shame I cant find a interview with the head of THQ - I'm pretty sure it was on a gametrailers invisible walls or some such where he speaks about how they had to smuggle computers into Ukraine to help out development because they would keep getting "seized" by customs there
nuttyjawa - I forgot about that until I read your comment. They were talking about how they had to get these computers that were really old to replace them because they were the only ones they could find. If I can find it I'll let you know.

This channel and a few others are the only people that I’d enjoy to watch more than 20 mins of a video for.
As a person who loves the metro series and has both 2033 and last light in normal and redux it saddens me to see deep silver force 4A to put Exodus on the epic games store so they can pay 5% less
Lol. It will come out in steam next year. All those sales are going to the trash.
I love metro as well. I got it for free in a "raffle". And when I got it I was confused, when I first played it was frightening. I couldn't play it until years later. And by god was it amazing.

How fitting, all my ads were for metro exodus. Great video!
Metro 2033 was my 5th game on Xbox 360 and it was amazing. I played a lot and then came Last Light. Which i buyed too (Day One Edition). When I played back i noticed a few changes on Metro 2033 like Miller doesn't use an Kalasch anymore but is using the electric bolt rifle now and other stuff. This channel needs to be a Netflix series or something. Way to thorough and well done for CZcams!
the metro series is one of my favorite single player series.
It is the first series that comes to mind when I think of the viability of linear singleplayer in modern gaming. I know the latest one had some open world elements, but still I believe there is narrative advantage to linear gaming that Metro really makes use of. The story holds tension better. Other games be like "Oh shit Ciri is missing gotta find her! Or, dragons are attacking out of nowhere gotta check it out!" .. and then the plot has to work with the fact that the player may have just wandered off and done side quests till level 30, so the momentum completely resets every time you move between story missions.
Some of the best video game content on CZcams. Quality stuff.
thank u, Gumers, always fascinating content
I liked the fact they put parts of the book into the game as hidden things to find.

Nice montage in minute 9:41, It look and sounded super cool.
Playing the original 2033 when it was first released was one of the best gaming experiences I've had.
I love the Metro games and the Stalker ones. They are some of the best games ever made. its nice to get detailed and deep games like them. The west sure wotn make them. Russia can make more if they like. I love them.
There are great western games but I agree, there's something about eastern european games that I just love. Maybe its the melancholy of living in cold/dark areas, look at cry of fear or other scandinavian games. They all have that "feel" to it
Russia doesn't make these games. Ukrainians do.
@@sergeontheloose Yea, people love to ignore that. Like actually just totally disregard it, despite the fact that Chernobyl is in fucking Ukraine. And not in some pseudo-russian contested eastern part of Ukraine like Donetsk, Literally right above Kiev. To be fair, Metro 2033 is in Moscow though so I don't blame them too much for thinking that its Russian.

I'm glad games like this exist. Not everything has to be a battle royale/multiplayer/loot box/politically correct pile of uninspired crap.
Isn't Metro 2033 a weirdly "politically correct" game?
The plot & theme is about how "If it's hostile, kill it" is as terrible a philosophy as it is unquestioned, you save the metro only by expanding your understanding, & the only named woman robs your dumb ass.
That's seems quite SJW to me?
@@Proctor_Conley I don't see how Metro is 'politically correct' when it has one of the most natural player input based plot progressions. Sure you can run and gun each and every level but doing so will rob you of the experience of overhearing dialogue which builds the world and story. For example, in a particular level near the early portion of the first game, there is a squad leader for the Communist faction who spouts Marxist principles to motivate his team. One of the members then asks what was his philosophy on the mutants and proceeds to state that not even Marx could feed himself with ideas alone.
A minor spoiler but if you refrain from gunning down humans and discover a set number of 'secrets', you get a more in depth idea of the overall conundrum.
@Rahil Mohan
How the hell does Metro 2033s' "natural player input based plot progressions" make it not a "politically correct" game?
By USA standards, it's for SJW cucks.
You do drugs, give charity, respect ghost, & you'll get a ending where everyone lives happily ever after because you were sensitive.
Hell, on the other side, the Redux version goes so far as to literally change dialogue to actually be Politically Correct to the Russian Government.
It changes every reference to the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation.
@@Proctor_Conley Throughout the games, we get Artyom's clear distaste for Communism, politics and how innocent people are forced to fight for causes they don't believe in.That's a good message.
I don't get what you mean by 'respecting ghosts' being SJW fodder when it's clearly set up as a supernatural occurrence to enhance the eerie nature of the metro. Nothing more or nothing less. This also applies to the 'positve' ending of the game which is more of a fantasy than anything else because it's not canon. It was a way to expand upon the narrative of the first game because at that time, no one knew how successful the game series would be. It was a way to develop the dark ones into more ambiguous characters, because on one hand, their very existence leads to madness in the minds of men, and on the other hand, they genuinely wanted to interact with humanity.
Moreover, how come changing the references to the Russian federation from the Soviet Union make it more politically correct for Russia ?
If you look for politics in everything, you can easily make a mountain out of a mole hill.
Woah, hold on a minute. Metro, one of the coolest single player experiences to date. Could also easily be one of the more interesting multiplayer games out right now.
0:55 only legends will know why this is EXPENSIVE!

@@edewar6004 I would agree AND disagree - Metro, all 3, have very good cinematics, thoughts, deep questions, emotions and humanism in them, stalker is a bit lacking in that. One REALLY bad quality both the games share though is the translation, i really fucking hate it, i'm half and half you see (Russian and American, well kind of), so seeing the amazing, emotional voice acting in both games in Russian, and the stiff, emotionless one in English that's further ruined by a fake accent really annoys me.
