Few video game villains are as versatile as zombies. The number of settings that they can appear in are unlimited. The range of powers and attributes that they can possess are vast. And because they lack a pulse, the ramifications of killing them are nonexistent. When Nathan Drake murders hundreds of mercenaries in Uncharted, one can’t help but wonder whether he is truly a good person. But when Leon Kennedy does the same to the undead in Resident Evil, there’s no question as to Leon’s righteousness.
The only major downside to zombies is that because of this versatility, there are no shortage of games that feature them - and because there are no shortage of games that feature them, their presence alone is rarely enough to make whatever they’re part of feel special. Few games from the mid-2000s were more acutely aware of this than Dead Rising. The brainchild of Capcom’s Keiji Inafune, Dead Rising cast players in the role of Frank West, a photojournalist-turned-vigilante who tasks himself with discovering the scoop of a lifetime in a zombie-infested shopping mall. While many players picked it up because of this premise alone, most stayed with it when they discovered that underneath laid a challenging, yet deeply rewarding gameplay experience; one that exacerbated the danger of its zombies with a stringent time limit, and an unforgiving save system.
When the dust around its release settled, the industry had crowned it one of the most unique takes on the genre, and a solid demonstration of how the seventh console generation would be able to take the medium to new heights. Yet Capcom was dissatisfied. It felt that Dead Rising could have been better had it leaned more deeply into its Western design elements, and that its development team had been unable to do so because it was almost entirely Japanese.
As a result, the company would enlist Vancouver-based developer Blue Castle Games to take over the series in its stead - a decision that helped improve it in the short term, yet stripped it of everything that made it unique in the long term.
This is the rise and fall of Dead Rising.

Inafune made a good a point about being innovative and not becoming stagnant. However it was Capcom that moved too fast with his idea. But in the end Kenji was right. At the time Japanese games were indeed slowing dying and the western market was booming. By appealing to the western market is how games like Dead Rising came into existence. Capcom however instead decided to neglect it's Japanese devs and go all in on the western ones. Dead Rising 2 was perhaps a great example of a western Dev team keeping the spirit of the Japanese creators vision while adding their own into the mix. Dead Rising 3 was the result of the team throwing all that out and instead jumping on the gritty depressing realism that sadly plagued the ps3 and 360.

3 is hysterically underrated for no reason. That game _rocked._ I loved it. It still managed to be wonderfully goofy, but in a way that really charmed me _and_ made me care about the characters. I connected to Nick a lot - both because I’m adopted (Nick Ramos was an orphan) and “Nick” is a nickname of mine in real life. It felt real with the character interactions, but not like anything was forced or overly-stereotypical in a way that ruined the charm of the characters (which I feel happened to Vick in DR4, she just turned into an annoying and preachy teenage stereotype). Having so much time to explore a massive area that was still filled to the brim with zombies was awesome, and somehow made driving around the world feel really badass and hilarious while also being productive for my adventure. Plus, no more cancerous escort missions. Say what you want, you elitist DR1 cock-sucking fanboys - escort missions _SOULD NOT EXIST EVER._

You take the core aspect of the product and you go look at the 3 or 4/5 star reviews and find out what would have made the product a 5 for those people. if it doesn't change the core of the product you can improve on it. using a knife as an example. if people complain that its not a fork... you ignore those people. if people say it could be sharper or it could use a serrated section you can listen to them.

I loved that you could also play that and bring in the money and levels you get there into the story mode. Didn't like having to play so much then getting the bad endings just to get the good one.

That's how I feel about Bethesda lately. Part of the fun of Fallout: New Vegas was seeing "quest failed" when you did certain things. Faction reputation, quest completion, NPC deaths, could all lock you out of certain quests and it made the game way more replayable.
Fallout 4 doesn't really have much of that until you get to the "point of no return" faction war quests, but you're pretty much in the endgame by then. You're better off reloading an old save if you wanna go with a different faction instead of restarting, because almost all of the early game is exactly the same.

While i understand people don't like 3, it is by far the best title in the series for me and the first one to really grab my attention. I played 2 first but that game never rly clicked with me too well even tho it was still fun and Chuck Greene is a good protagonist. However, 3 to me felt like Capcom at its best and such a huge evolution from 2. Nick felt like a real person experiencing a zombie outbreak and the story as a whole was pretty damn compelling since it ties so heavily to the first game when it comes to the antagonists especially. Idk man, i see so many comments that Dead Rising 3 took the series downhill, but i didn't see it that way. That game will never become old for me and i think the series should've ended there. DR4 basically renders the whole "cure" plot meaningless and it's one of the things that made Nick "special" aside from him being a mechanic. Also, him being a mechanic is literally the perfect tie in to the game's combo weapon system. I always thought that was a major upgrade from how tedious it felt to try to find a workbench so u can combo ur weapons. Anyway, the fourth installment really regressed in quality. It somehow looks worse than 3, it removed psychopaths, and its story is just trying to justify why it even exists in the first place

Dead Rising 1 was a legendary masterpiece. It’s gameplay was perfect and it’s story was brilliant. It blended everything perfectly and created a memorable experience for anyone who played it. It was sad at the moments that counted, scary at the moments that were needed and comedy is a big risk in games, so what they did was genius. They made it so WE made our own comedy.
Dead Rising 2 improved on some gameplay elements but the satisfaction of killing zombies slightly dwindled compared to the OG.
Dead Rising 2 case west was brilliant because it added to Dead Rising 2 and gave us (my opinion) the greatest team up in video game history. Apart from Shepard and Garrus from the ME series.
Dead Rising case zero was a nice little prequel but didn’t add a whole lot, it was still nice to have though.
Dead Rising 2 off the record was an amazing spin off story which in my opinion, had better elements than Dead Rising 2. It also added probably the greatest feature to Dead Rising. Sandbox mode.
Dead Rising 3 was very fun with its gameplay but story wise, and acting, it lacked severely. The satisfaction for killing zombies was ramped back up, not to the degree of Dead Rising 1 but in my opinion, the second most satisfying in the series. The main character, actually, pretty much all characters in Dead Rising 3 were very forgettable. The gameplay is what makes this one shine.
Dead Rising 4 can suck a dick.

I hope Capcom takes the right lessons from Dead Rising 3 and 4's unpopularity. Play testing is not the end-all-be-all, sometimes the developer knows best. The limited clock and sequencing of events made 1 and 2 feel tense, and made the player feel a bit anxious when confronted with a mob of zombies. You had to consider how long it would take you to mow through them, plan ahead, consider alternate routes.
When dealing with zombie games you have to limit the player somehow; either give them limited time, or limited resources. Resident Evil gives you limited resources, and almost unlimited time (save certain segments). Dead Rising gave you unlimited resources scattered all over, but limited time. Take away that time and all the tension is gone.

@@stormichow5325 think about the story from dead rising 3, we now know that nick ramos is the cure and has taken out the leader for the phenontrons company, however just cause the leader is dead, doesn't mean the company is long gone. Just cause nick ramos is the cure doesn't mean that its over. Which other company would want to take the initiative to ensure that the cure is not made. Phenontrons. So thus, the protagonist, a multi billionare investor for the Phenontrons, he learns about the dark truth and the 3 zombie incidents that have happened ( the first three dead rising games) and then you decide to cut ties with Phenontrons, take your life savings and run from this treacherous company. You call your child and wife to inform them to get out. The place is no longer safe. You then rush to the mansion but it's too late, a couple Phenontrons agents have brutal murdered your wife and child and thus you collapse near the bodies, hugging and sobbing.
Then the policemen show up, mistankely they think your the culprit, so they shoot you ( you should definitely look at the police shooting Markus from Detroit become human, kinda like that), thus you awaken in a van surrounded by the swat team sitting there shaming you for doing this such heinous murder (even though you didn't). The swat team also have obtained a vial of the cure in which nick ramos gave , where they are taking it to the distribution center to create more, enough to the cured the unfortunate infected in the 3 zombie infested areas ( first three dead rising games). But unfortunately, a couple of Phenontrons agents ambush the squad and massacre the agents, and they have stolen the cure vial. Now they order operation mutify, in which they drop a nuke and it infects the people with the virus. Now you are awaken and you then witness the destruction and the infection has started. People have turned into zombies and those who have not have either died or in hiding. Now you need to save this city from the mistakes that you made and retrieve the cure vial back.
I also have the psychopaths and their songs planed out but i can't show it you just in case Capcom wants to know about it.
