Space. Cold, dark, and endless, the Earth’s final frontier has long served as the backdrop for all manner of horrifying fiction, from the heart-pounding terror of Alien, to the cerebral drama of System Shock. Where other classic horror settings require the addition of fantastical stalkers to put the lives of their characters at risk, space alone tears apart anything that dares confront it unprepared; uncaringly, unflinchingly, and in total silence.
When EA Redwood Shores debuted the survival horror game Dead Space in 2008, they succeeded in both capturing the inherent wickedness of its setting, and delivering an experience that played more sublimely than any other horror game before it. Rather than attempt to generate tension with sluggish tank controls and other arcane mechanics, Dead Space made Isaac Clarke’s hellish march through a zombie-infested flagship as intuitive to control as it was scary.
Players lapped it up, Redwood Shores became Visceral Games, and a small barrage of cross-media content followed, including an unexpectedly solid spin-off on the Wii, and an even greater sequel. Eventually, however, the demands that the franchise cater to a wider audience caught up with it, and Visceral Games released Dead Space 3 - a solid action title that exemplified its creators’ competency, but failed to fully capture the sense of horror that had made its predecessors so beloved. The series faded away, and its developers, despite their pedigree, would follow shortly after.
This is the rise and fall of Dead Space.

You get it as a fan or videogamer yourself. But most decisions are made by business-people. Those guys who spend their time in front of a desk, paper, money, numbers - and not in front of a game . They know nothing about the product. If you read articles or interviews about publisher fails, or listen to podcasts about it or get the chance to write with them in forums or chats, you hear storys like from Microsoft where someone thought they own Donkey Kong now because they saw a poster of it in the Rare Studios when they bought them. Hiring someone just for the numbers or to make money is not always a bad thing. But when you are into the 5year circle machine, you get someone who wants to put as much as possible in the own pockets and gives no shit if you can play dead space, skate or whatever. And tbh, EA fucked up Dragon Age and people still get excited about it when just a teaser gets released showing literally nothing. 1 good game vs. 2 shitty ones and people still want to pre-order something new from that.

@@GARCIIIAmonster It's also more complicated than that with publicly traded companies though.
The biggest problem is that shareholders can sue for what they consider bad decision-making. Doesn't matter if it actually is, if they believe it will cut short term profit down at all, they can sue the company for projected losses. I want to reiterate here, they can sue the company for losses THAT HAVEN'T ACTUALLY OCCURRED, but they believe will based on projections, simply because they see it as it being done specifically against the company's best interests.
That means if you have a choice between making an excellent sequel game for slightly less projected profit, or making a mediocre game for much more profit because the IP is well known already, your company can be sued into the ground for choosing the former. This is the real heart of the issue, and something that occurs in every industry, entirely thanks to companies going public or merging with a company that already has.

For me Dead Space is a pretty tragic series, it was really trying to branch out with all the comics, side games and other media. Yet so many of those attempts to branch out failed to get much attention, it's a shame since while they might not have been as solid as the original game they really fleshed out the world with their narratives. Which is why I'm glad this is back up, the more places people can be exposed to the series the better!

@Rowan Bartlett I'd like to clarify when I say accessable to anybody I don't mean change gameplay to fit what the general public wants. I mean making the series accessable in any form, comic fans might stumble upon the comic series and explore the games from there. Or maybe somebody who only had a Wii played extraction and became curious about the other games and what they were like. Changing something to fit a different mold rarely works out, and not for very long if it does. Which is why I find people who say they couldn't beat 1 because it was too scary and thus 2 being altered for that to be annoying.

Dead Space and Resident Evil path seems intertwined... DS1 was born mainly due to RE4 then new 3rd person over-the-shoulder control, DS1 somewhat refined the control, RE then sort of went downhill with RE5/6 becoming more 'fast and furious' style. After DS2, they themselves also went the same path, going 'fast and furious' and crashed...
RE then made a comeback with RE7 and RE2 remake with some similar ideas from DS. RE7 features a story of a protagonist went looking for a missing wife (same as Isaac Clarke and also James Sunderland) and RE2 remake had dismemberment of zombie limbs (?sounds familiar)... Hopefully Dead Space can once again follow the RE path and make a comeback..

I had a feeling it would be a great survival horror game and it lived up to my expectations. Despite the hype Dead Space 2 got I didn't like it as much. It was less scary. By the 3rd game I was done. It was no long Survival Horror Dead Space, they lost their way on what made this series so great from those of us who bought the first game. If this series comes back it needs to be survival horror, not trying to cater to players who are too scared just so they can "sell more copies" as EA stated for Dead Space 3 once... it was meant to be scary and should bring back the terror. We no longer have Dead Space becasue EA killed what made it original in the first place and now Dead Space sells absolutely nothing and is a dead IP.

El Tio James indeed which is sad because dead space was such a great series and it makes me so sad that both dead space and visceral games are dead and buried.

Great Protagonist , Great game story , Rest and Peace Visceral . For my opinion Story is not ended. And I believe look in future from Carver or Ellie prospective. Because virus not fall and Moons not destroyed. But it’s only dream from new companies. Tank you Visceral for this Masterpiece

Another notch on EA's bedpost, proving that Visceral Games was just another dev that EA wined, dined, fucked, & dumped.
