  • Metro 2033 displays to us the desolate world of Moscow after a post-apocalyptic event. But what was the cause of this? Who was behind these nukes setting off, how bad was this for the world and why did this mean the people of Moscow had to live in the dark Metro Stations?
    In this I look at all the prior events before we meet Artyom in 2033 and explore what caused this world to be the way it is.

    Bit of a nitpick here. The people that go to the surface the metro relies on for resources such as firewood are called Stalkers. The Spartan Rangers are a militant order operating out of Polis, the largest station in the Metro. The Spartans _do_ keep the metro safe because they focus on issues that affect the entire metro instead of getting bogged down in political disputes, but they aren’t the soul military power of the metro. They’re a small, basically spec ops group that Artyom joins. Most stations have soldiers, and major factions like the Red Line, Fourth Reich, and Hansa (I can’t remember if Polis is called Hansa in the book or if it’s just Polis) have standing armies.
    Every station has stalkers, but some, such as Polis, have the resources to better equip their stalkers. A fun fact is Polis is also the only faction with a stable enough society to be sending stalkers to the surface just to get books.

    I always thought it was implied in the Metro universe that the Soviet Union never collapsed, hence the Cold War never ended, leading to it turning "hot" in 2013. Miller, for example, mentioned "Soviet" a few times when talking about pre-war military manufacturing in D6. In fact, there seems to be more references in the story to the Soviet Union rather than to the Russian Federation when older characters mention anything related to pre-war Russia.

    • @simonaspalovis1204
      @simonaspalovis1204 Před 2 lety +59

      Soviet military manufacturing was built to last and it's very likely that D6 was created while the Cold War was still happening. So, just because the Soviet Union fell, doesn't mean the Russian Federation simply changed their whole military industry. They still used the same bunkers, vehicles, artillery and other stuff. The only thing they likely changed was remove the communist flags and propaganda. So Miller saying that the bunkers have a "Soviet" feel is very true as they were likely built while the Soviet Union was still around.
      And yet...how could Miller have known what soviet bunkers "feel like"? He was probably in his 40's when the bombs fell, so the earliest he could have joined the military was right after the end of the Cold War and fall of USSSR. So unless, he held communist ideals very personally his whole life, he should have referred to them as "Federation bunkers", because that's what Russia has been referred as for most of his supposed military career.

    The lore history has always been shrouded in a bit of fog, even reading the original novel as it's from Artyom's perspective only gives us information he knows, which in the pre-war isn't much. On one hand it makes sense because the story is all about Artyom's exploration and journey in the post-apocalypse rather than his life before the metro. Though, I would love, if one of these days, both the original author and Metro team would come together and make a "Metro bible" for us lore hounds just to understand the universe better.

      There's book "Welcome in Russia" (translated from Polish, i don't know if its also tittle for english) written by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Its few different stories, but the last one is telling us a little about how war started. Maybe this book is not directly from metro Universe, but sience both are written by same autor, its safe to assume that he written about this same war.

    • @thirstyserpent1079
      @thirstyserpent1079 Před 3 lety +5

      Interestingly the writer leaves the lore open ended and allows others to contribute to the metro vers, other authors have written books that take place in Poland, Ireland, the US, and Germany etc and they are all considered canon to an extent. Each one basically a self contained ecosystem in which isolated pockets of humans survive cut off from others.
      In the ireland book I believe it features a story in which some kind of horrific lovecraftian esque super mutant monstrosity is inhabiting the caves with the survivors and preys on them if they venture into certain areas, the limit of which creeps closer over time
      In the book that takes place in America I think it's located in Chicago and tells the story of a number of black people from the shit part of town who managed to survive in the sewers or so and have become somewhat hyper religious

    Ironically, despite the apparent destruction and immense radiation of the Moscow ruins, Moscow itself was never actually directly hit by any nuclear weapons.
    This was due to the advanced defenses designed to protect the capitol.
    (These would be the missiles we see in the trailer; you might initially assume these are retaliatory nukes, however those would've been launched minutes before as soon as NATO missiles were detected, and were most likely miles away from Moscow)
    Unfortunately, in the end, the only difference this made was denying the citizens of Moscow a swift death, as the radiation storm that soon followed consumed and altered all life in it's path.

      Yes that also means defending Moscow as a whole, but if push came to shove, they would sacrifice the rest of Moscow to save the Kremlin... The same way America would probably sacrifice most of DC to protect the white house, or Britain would sacrifice London to protect the royal family, it's all about keeping the leadership of the nation alive.
      Hell, even in the game itself we know the defenses didn't fully work, as a missile landed very near Moscow just outside the city limits, likely wiping out a huge chunk of people...

They mentioned about heavy communication jamming and soldiers were calm at first then suddenly air sirens activated. Russia have early warning systems and can estimate time of impact and retaliate fast but in flashback, only after air sirens Russia launched its nukes( and it's probably not Russian officials but "dead hand"/"perimeter" suddenly activated )

    Incredible lore vid. I've only seen gameplay of the most recent game and hadn't even known about the series before that. A really intense world, terrifying and threatening. It's too relatable though and has too much potential to become true. I think that adds to the somber feel of games like this (and Fallout with a similar story from the American perspective). Really glad to see more of the history involved in this amazing game series. Very well done.
