- The Dark Ones are the main antagonist of both Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light (2034), a lanky dark creepy creature that lingers within the shadows manipulating images and is said to be the next stage in human evolution.
But who or what are they? What do they want and what is their fate? In this video we explore their full story up until Metro Exodus so we get a full idea as to what role they play in the overall Metro Universe.

I recall in Metro 2033 that Artem first lived as a child at the Botanical Gardens metro station (adjacent to the VDNKh metro station), which is where the doors to the Metro were left open to the Dark Ones. Only after his home station had been overrun by giant rats did Artem find a new home at VDNKh. Am I wrong?

I always saw the dark one that follows arytom through exodus to be the dark one he saved. After all it could follow him with ease and doesn't feel exhausted and can travel as far as it wants. Probably just curious to see what Artyom is upto. Maybe it's filming a David Attenborough type documentary

You would suspect that an intelligent group of telekinetic beings would be able to figure out that simply walking up to humans would be a bad idea.
Yeah. Its the same old boooring trope as with the friendly aliens. They are so smart and friendly, they are just misunderstood. Well, one would think that such a smart species (especially one with telepathic skills) would figure out a better way of approaching humans than just walking towards them with their imposing body. Even humans tend to learn rather quickly how to approach dumber species without making them feel threatened. What the black ones did was basically walking towards a bear with cubs, and then wondering why they got mauled.

@@Dutch_man20 If your only form of communication drives the people your trying to communicate with insane/kills them... then just stop trying to talk to them. You don't HAVE to communicate with them. Of course, that's ignoring how bullshit that idea is, these things really can't figure out any kind of non telepathic communication? They're too damn dumb to understand written language? Or just symbols? Start leaving some written messages, or supplies by the entrance to the Metro tunnels, build up a relationship slowly. It would take time, but what's the rush?
If you keep heading in, driving them mad, leading radioactive mutants in your wake, DOZENS of times, the people you're trying to talk to will probably think you mean them harm. There's nothing 'fair' about 'It was the only option!'. It's unimaginative nonsense. The Dark Ones were morons, too oblivious to notice the corpses they kept piling up.

Hi there
I think that scene of Artyom getting rescued from Extremists is a reference to how in the book he's nearly executed by fascists when he is miraculous saved. HOWEVER. That scene exists and is plot armor-ey is because the author began writing Metro 2033 online for free. He uploaded chapter by chapter and in that original story when Artyom is captured he is hung. And he does die. Thats how the story would have ended had he not expanded on the story when he wrote the novel. Just a fun fact. Don't know if it would have any bearing on the theory but it provides context to why that scene may feel odd.

I'm not sure if this is explained in the games, but it is in the books. The dark ones actually chose Artyom because he was the only human they found who could hear them through telepathy. Everyone else was driven crazy when they tried to speak to them, and the reason they invaded the station was actually to find Arytom to be their bridge. Killing of the humans was just a side effect of their abilities.
Except maybe they could’ve thought of a better way than invading the place, which would clearly be seen as a threat. I feel bad for them, but some of it they brought onto themselves
They were fine building that bridge with bodies. The Dark Ones deserved their fate.
I love how the Dark ones are humanized, facing grave threat of extinction, vulnerability, and not being the usual "Oh, kill the humans" type.
They could've easily made the The Dark Ones, the bad guys but they didn't which is what really pulls me into the lore.
This is a very unique approach and I love it.

In the Metro 2035 novel (maybe it's my bad memory, I haven't read it in a long time -- so take this with a grain of salt,) it's confirmed that the Dark Ones' were created by the Russian Government before the world ended to be used as living weapons against their enemies. But it seemed that these weapons had/developed free will, and wanted to live in peace with the rest of humanity. In the novels, it's unknown if any Dark Ones survived. But in the games they did. :D
It's strange, and also not so strange, how those Dark Ones were in Novosibirsk, of all places. I hope they return in the next Metro game, along with Pavel Morozov. :D

i think i've read somewhere that there is mission where Artyom met Pavel in Taiga but they cut it out mid development. Maybe that why u can find Pavel voice actor being credited in Metro Exodus although he doesn't appear anywhere in that game, sadly.
Or maybe that's for their next DLC? idk

Havent read the book,but the librarian monsters seem to be the missing link between nosalies.from the metro and the dark one...like they evolved into the dark ones bby reading books and acquiring vast amounts of knowledge

The first book is amazing and is definitely much better than the first game. Second book is a little boring. But the third book is great.
I hope the author actually goes through the same route as the games did with exodus because it was a much needed breath of fresh air for the world

In Metro Exodus theres a part of the game where in the desert bunker when going thru the vents you can see a dark skinny leg move to another vent which is inaccessable. wherever i look i see no mention of of, so maybe a dark one has been following Artyom?

Good video dude. I love metro. WAs considering doing my next in depth analytical review on 2033 but I elected to do the first Ratchet and Clank instead because I spent most of last year doing FPS games (Halo 2, 3, ODST, Reach and 4. Also did Wars) and wanted to do something a bit different

Amazing video man. Even tho im terrified of the metro games and i always play on the easiest difficulzy, i love them. I just dont like horror and im really terrified of paranormal things like ghosts, zombies and mutants i have no idea why. There were times in my life i stared right back at death without fear, but a picture of a ghosts or a zombie film? I just cant handle that idk why.

Just finished my playthrough list of my first Metro game, Exodus tonight. I had no idea that the dark ones were something I should be looking for. But I did see something that I think you might find interesting. During the fall segment of the train Ride on the way to novosibirsk, If you go to the front of the train and stand with Sam and watch off the right side of the train for long enough, you will pass a train station and at that station is a person, just standing there, I thought it was like a zombie at first, then maybe somebody that froze in a standing position... But now I wonder
Yeah, during the mission where you are in the radioactive city trying to find a cure for Anna, I could have sworn I saw the dark ones sometimes.
And I think it is a real thing, I’ve seen videos online about how they do appear as a sort of Easter egg.
@@foundationuser5043 yep, there are i think 5 appearances of Dark Ones (easter eggs to say) in the entire game. at least 3 are in the Dead City chapter of Novosibirsk.

all humans know is hardship death and suffering with brief moments of happiness and joy in between. it's deep rooted in us to survive and it will take alot to trust someone or something.
you could say we have it good now but we are still doing the same mistakes as in the past, the difference being our bellies are full and we live longer lives with a smidge of health... we dope our brains with drugs and entertainment just to take a break from reality instead of truly enjoying the present with one another as company.
which is why i find this series of games interesting because it reminds me of that.

I've played Exodus 6 or 7 times and I have played the Novosibirsk level more than 10 times and I have never heard Miller say that he saw the Dark One. Is this cut dialogue or what? How do I get him to say it?

well if you are a "good boy" you get good ending, in metro last light endings they are the ones change the fate by deciding to help or not to help artyom
so i also think exodus ending is also decided by dark ones, if you are a goodboy non of the squadmates leave team or die (consdering they can manipulate mind)
in novabrisk as i destroyed the spelling, you can spot a dark one, that tells me they are saying "you came all this way, were you a goodboy?" depending on that you get to live with your waifu or die a badboy

Your opening scene of the missile launches and incoming detonation over Moscow always puzzled me. Wouldn't every one of those missiles launching in that scene have had all of its electronics burned out by the EMP from the incoming detonation? They should all have started to veer wildly off course as the guidance systems shut down, and eventually hit the ground with no more than a thud.
I think Khan would be mortified by you calling him a 'Ranger'.
As to the Dark Ones, their ultimate aim is to join with humans to rebuild the world. With that in mind they would always keep an eye on Artyom, he being one of the few able to connect with them.
Such a major part of the first two games became nothing but the odd glimpse in the third. The Dark Ones are still too unexplained to count them out yet.
I like to think that the next installment of the Metro series will see Artyom and the Spartans linking up with the Dark Ones and returning to Moscow to free those left in the Metro, taking them all to Baikal.

@@2KOOLURATOOLGaming The necessary shielding would be too heavy. The missile silos and such are shielded, but I don't think they are supposed to launch during a detonation. Considering the early warning systems today, the out-going missiles should be well on their way before the incoming arrive.

Fun fact: in Russian version, and in the original book on which the game series is based on, these monsters are called "чёрные" or, in literal translation, "the black ones" - the name was changed most likely to not be offensive for oh so sensitive EU/US consumers.

I remember in the 2033 book this actually causes confusion between Artyom and the old man he meets, he expresses disdain when the man mentions the "black ones" at a nearby station, thinking the dark ones have already gotten ahead of him and he is falling behind in his mission, meanwhile the old man has no idea about dark ones and starts to think Artyom is a racist/Nazi sympathiser for being so apprehensive about there being black people in the station hahaha. It was something like that anyway..

If anyone didn’t know this but if u stay in the main menu screen of metro exodus for a certain amount of time a dark one will show up out side the window of the train. So you never know the dark ones where probably still with us keeping us safe.

Usually a small bit of conversation, a specific car pulling into a parking lot, or a uniquely colored ball bouncing down the street. Seemingly oddball nonsense.
A couple times I have tried to alter the outcome or follow it... but It would never end in any sort of revelation.

I prefer to believe that the darkones aren’t man made but rather discovered under D6.
It feels weird to have people make supernatural beings, but finding them makes more sense. Maybe that’s how the psychic mass in the red square in the books was a result from experiments on the dark ones?
