Metro’s Haunting Dead City - Novosibirsk | FULL Metro Exodus Lore

- In Metro Exodus we witness the dark and terrifying city known as Novosibirsk, also known as The Dead City. This city is void of life, filled with ice and now, littered with abandoned vehicles and dead bodies everywhere. On top of that terrifying beasts known as the Blind Ones roam the building known as the Institute using their telepathy to search for food.
But how did this city get this way? Why are there no people living in the Metros and why are the buildings fully intact still? Well in this video we look at the English known lore of Novosibirsk, The Dead City.

Don't apologise for not being able to pronounce a word from a different language, ever.
You did way too much great work to worry about anything like that anyway!
After a long and difficult journey, you face the game's deadliest enemy: Radiation.
There was no big boss fight. No giant monster or rival gang leader. Just you and the harsh reality of Metro's ruined world.
(And those big gorillas too)
They were super easy with millers railgun
@@azzii2101 you know you can just sneek past them right? As you can pass the librarians in 2033 without wasting a bullet. At the hardest, every bullet counts
I always thought it was a bit strange how effective the Nuclear weapons were in terms of lasting radiation in Novosibirsk. IRL you would pretty much just need to wear a mask and some thick clothing and you could walk around in Moscow fine.
EDIT TO EXPLAIN FULLY:
The threat of nuclear fallout is not the radiation touching your skin. Background radiation can be very high, but simple contact with your body won't kill you quickly.
That isn't to say it isn't SAFE, it just isn't particularly lethal. After 20 years, the radiation will be nowhere high enough to give you radiation poisoning (EVEN IF IT'S A COBALT SEEDED BOMB!). After 40 years in the Metro you would likely develop cancer, which is common in the books. However since most die to mutants, background radiation honestly isn't a big deal.
The ACTUAL threat in irradiated areas is dust and other breathable particles. If you breath these in, they will get into your vital organs (lungs) and kill you VERY quickly.
That is why you HAVE to wear a filtered mask, like they do in the games.
It's why hair products cannot be used in nuclear fallout, because the dust will linger in the hair after you leave.
So while a mask would be mandatory, clothing wouldn't really matter (within reason). What matters more is that you decontaminate those clothes to make sure no dust is left on them.
There isn't really a good reason to explain why Novosobirsk is so dangerous, but it doesn't really matter.
@@aw3046 Usa dropped a "Dirty Bomb" on Novosibirsk, designed for maximum fallout instead of explosive destruction.
Just radiation and big monke
F for the Two Colonels, who both saved their sons.
1st colonel is Hlebnikov and yes he saved his son, but 2nd colonel is mel'nikov and he tried to save his daughter.
Sadly both died
@@hubkemeister I was talking about Artyom, who was like a son to him.
@@hubkemeister that wasnt a colonel saving his daughter, that was a general. And the title “two colonels” refers to Miller and Khlebnikov
Miller saved Kirill too. Without him, he would've died... Cuz, y'know, his father wasn't coming back and Kirill was uncertain to leave his home or not. Besides, Kirill has nowhere to go, since Miller was the one retrieving the map. If he left his home, I doubt he had a good gun skills, but not leaving Novosibirsk could mean killing himself with starvation, radiation or getting overran by mutants.
In metro 2033 the game, it is suggested that the slime is just biomass that a bunch of people were melted down and mutated into at D6. Similar to the biomass in dead space.
There are documents that say everyone took shelter in the deepest part of D6 - the reactor (where the slime was), but the thing is, there aren't any bodies anywhere. Just the biomass.
Just like in the Kremlin, it's speculated that some kind of bio weapon was used and it ate away at people and basically melted them down.
Creepy to think about.. Bioweapons like that probably exist in our own world.
in the book that is exactly what happened, and it lures people in by making them hallucinate and then have them throw themselves into the goop, in the books its also way more active and far far bigger since it's all througout the kremlin
@@theluftwaffle1 considering that flesh eating parasites exist irl... yeah, probably.
@@mrfun177 the book version was terrifying, especially when they had to sing and one of them still gave in.
The dead city was always bone chilling for me. A true radioactive wasteland with ruthless storms, blood chilling cold,, horrifying mutated forms of life, and every building shell haunted by the spirits of the dead. Going above ground was a death sentence. Everything there either dead or dying... the brief glimpse of what the Moscow Metro almost became and what Artyom had helped to prevent always in the back of the mind as I wandered this particular slice of irradiated hell.
Even before entering the City, Coming in on the train I was like ''no plz lets go back I know this gonna be the freshest of hells''. And it was. Still interesting to see though
i feel bad for novosibirsk
they thought there the last humans
in russia while the rest of the world are doing just fine
the city is like russian version of game of thrones or princess mononoke esque fighting two factions
i feel bad for the boy, he was the last remnant of novo inhabitant
his deceased father was the true hero
before the spartans visiting novo city
but im glad he’s adopted by the spartans and grows ups as spartan soldier
The simple concept of shadows of the dead wandering forgotten places is both saddening and terrifying to me. It would seem best to not tread on those old grounds in the hope of not disturbing the forgotten.
"This is no mine. It's a tomb..."
The Novosibirsk level was definitely one of my most memorable experiences in a videogame. The build-up to it was perfect as well - you and Miller had to go to it for Anna's sake, but you fully knew how unbelievebly high the radiation levels were. You even thought of other alternatives to fixing Anna's condition, but eventually it all led to Novosibirsk. Mutants and opposing human factions is something Artyom never really had an issue dealing with, because they are enemies that can you can fight back. But how can you fight deadly amounts of radiation? Playing the Dead City level kinda made me imagine how the liquidators of the Chernobyl NPP felt in 1986 - utterly helpless, but determined not to give up.
I agree with you the dead city was very unsettling and a weird way it felt like someone or something was watching you through your journey in the dead city. But even through all that artyom never stopped he kept on going even with the mass amounts of radiation poison and the blind ones or lost ones. I hope in the next metro game artyom can talk in the actual game instead of just in the loading screen.
@@ismaelgingles9409 interestingly enough, THERE IS someone watching you throughout Novisibirsk as there are 3-4 sightings of Dark Ones throughout the level
Playing through the Two Colonels DLC makes it even more emotional. Miler saved his last vial of "green stuff" for Arthyon...
The beauty of “the two colonels” DLC is that you played through the eyes of one of the many many bodies you find, makes you wonder what every single lost soul’s story was when you walk up on them.
More of this please. Especially the darker parts, like history of the Red Line, Fourth Reich, Hanza, Polis, etc. You learn quite a bit by reading the books if you haven't!
I’m gonna look at the factions soon. I wanna read the books again as it’s been ages since I read them and can’t remember all the details

To this day is consider the Dead City of Novosibirsk the most realistic take on a post nuclear city and the DLC for it God added more to how if people did survive in a city like that it would be both so well fitting and horrifying. Thank you for this video
It's still pretty unrealistic. Nuclear warheards are engineered for destruction, so most of the fissile material is used up. There's very little fallout, actually.

I love the lore of the Metro series and Novosibirsk was definately the most creepy place in the all the games so far. The haunting and crushingly depressing atmosphere there really did a good job of making you feel isolated and lonely. I hope we get more Metro games in the future with even more places like this.

It really made me tear up the dlc and the dead city level of metro exodus, its truly a masterpiece.
Not to say the other levels were bad, i enjoyed the whole game but some parts were more engaging than others (mainly the lineal ones). Still, if it wasn't for the odyssey the aurora and the crew took before, this chapter wouldn't feel the same. RIP the two colonels
All the poor souls lost in Novosibirsk...
Also, a small little detail, in the "Winter chapter", on the Aurora, spartan members report seemingly very high radiation even 50 kilometers away from Novosibirsk (31 miles)
i feel bad too, novo city could have kept together and wait for spartans
but there desperately needed plants to keep them alive all because of the mold made everyone severly losing morales
but leaving novo would be a problem too

This game series will always have a special place in my heart I’m sad not that many people know about it but I’m also glad it’s sort of a hidden gem
Cobalt bombs were also used in the bombs under the urals in Dr strangelove's doomsday device
The first thing I noticed when I saw this place in-game was the complete lack of nuclear weapon damage, unlike Moscow.
Cobalt bombs were also called "salted bombs" and were supposedly only theoretical. The objective was to create a weapon that could siege your enemies for years after deployment. The cobalt is changed into cobalt 60, which has a half life of just over 5 years.
The half life makes it impractical to wait out the short term high intensity radiation in bomb shelters while still producing enough of it to kill anyone who is caught outside. The name comes from the phrase "salting the earth" which prevents plant growth
Yeah, the game isnt realistic. Even IRL, the nuke winter was basically made up, and even if humanity managed to somehow create enough bombs to create it, there is no way that it would last for decades. The danger of nukes IRL isnt in what happens in the short term, or the long term, but the mid term (1-5 years). After some 10 years the site of a nuke explosion should be rid of any dangerous levels of radiation and should be navigable even without protective gear.
Cobalt bombs were designed to push back that safe stage, and prolong the dangerous stage, but even then, you should be easily able to half the amount of green stuff rations for everyone after 5 years, then half it again after another 5, and after 5 years, everyone would basically require 8 times less than when the bombs fell. But again, Metro (book) is a metaphor for the Russian society (thats why they are banned in Russia), not a study of the post war effects on the society and nature.
I can assure you, through military and government agencies, the capabilities of US/Russia/China nuclear wise are nothing like how they are depicted in Metro.
It’s FAR worse. And what’s scary is our incompetent leaders are now threatening nuclear war like it’s nothing.
@@pavelslama5543dude fucking Chernobyl is still radioactive, just think about how many bombs were sent.
5:20 Understand, it's not called zelonka randomly. It is called that because that's what the Soviets called their equivalent to iodine, which they used as a panacea for random injuries and scrapes (because it is an antiseptic), and I am sure that's why the magical radmeds were called that.
yeah, because of the familiarity of the substance’s look and name. i don’t think that there are many people using it today but in 00’s it was quite popular as a common treat for such conditions as chickenpox - basically aiding each area of skin affected by rush with a touch of Zelenka.
so naming a radmed by something that familiar to population clearly has its benefits on psychological level.

Metro Exodus:You travel half of Russia
Well, thank you for finally answering a question that had been racking my brain for years. Novosibirsk was always a source of fascination for my in Exodus due to how ultimate it's destruction it was. Moscow, horrible as it was, allowed for life to live on the surface. Novosibirsk, on the other hand, was allegedly hit harder than all the other targets in Russia. I didn't understand why it had been hit so heavily. Now however, I have a better idea. The city was not innocent as it turned out; they were creating bio-weapons and by extension, a cure of the weapon's effects controlled only by them. Good god man... Horrendous.
i mean can you help them though? by the looks of all the mutation the US and NATO heavily used their own bio weapons as well. that's just how the world was and still is ma man. some countries just don't want to give up their top places and some countries believe that making sure to be as strong as these arrogant nations is the only way to rise up.
What would be amazing would be an open world Metro game in Moscow where you can fully explore all the tunnels (and what you can of the surface without dying). I know that it would be insane to design a game that large with the detail they put into the Metro games. Maybe it could be about a younger Khan learning about the supernatural stuff in the metro as he on some grand mission or when he comes because to where ever he disappeared to and can help evacuate people to Lake Baikal before some threat ends all life in the metro.
Guess the farthest we've got is the Ksathriya DLC from Metro Last Light, although it's basically just a prop hunt.
I do agree that Khan is one of the most interesting characters in the series, though.
Dude this game but massive online multiplayer where there are other stalkers and you can hide your loot but everyone can find each other’s loot if you look hard enough

@@WiseFish Gods do I know it! I won't lie and say Metro 2033 and Last Light were the most polished experiences ever, but the atmosphere and story just drew me in way too hard to ignore, and when I got to Exodus, my expectations were BLOWN AWAY. If all three games played like Exodus, I would play Metro nonstop forever and ever.
Speaking of which, maybe we should nudge 2A to make a re-redux where the first two games are tuned to work in the Exodus engine. Or at least release more DLC.
Beware that this game still has _a lot_ of bugs, from physics, to skyboxes tearing, screen tearing, aaaaaaand crashes. It might not be that bad on PC, but you probably won't like what's in store if you're on ranger hardcore.

Novosibirsk got hit during the evacuation process of the city, as can be seen due to the sheer number of abandoned Military vehicles and the fact that Miller also said so.
Like Moscow, those lucky enough to be in the underground tunnels of the Metro would've survived the initial blast but would soon succumb to the amount of radiation left behind.
Though it is unknown to how hard Novosibirsk was bombed it was supposed by one of the crew members (forgot his name even though I just beat the game) that the city was hit harder and also was bombed with a Cadium Bomb, which essentially is a Nuclear bomb that leaves behind even more Radiation.
When Artyom and Miller first get to the City, it's outer buildings seemed to of survived the initial blast as well though was still damaged, once inside the Metro system of the city there appeared to of been no one left alive until we reach further down into the Metro and find a execution chamber and then a battlefield, It seems that the Habits of Moscow's Metro also reached Novosibirsk just on a much larger scale. There are armored carts that strangely enough look exactly like the Panzer carts that the Reich's use in Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, however we do not see any Reich Soldiers, just old Corpses with rags.
As for the people that were in this Metro system it was stated that the Government had managed to also survive the bombings and took control over Novosibirsk Metro and were apparently very hostile to anyone who dared to oppose them, this of course lead to riots which is also the cause of the abandoned battlefields we see in Exodus.
On the surface there is nothing but abandoned buildings and spirits of the dead, a true hell that Novosibirsk became. All that's left of the buildings is the ghostly reminders of what happened on that fateful day in 2013.
Nothing but haunted abandoned buildings with corpses and mutated monsters ready to pounce on you as soon as they get the chance.
The city is a dead, haunted hellhole. It was no question to why people stay away from it...

Loved the background on some of the info not presented in the games. I'm looking forward to reading the books at some point. Though, my biggest question I can't seem to find any info on is the giant radiation energy ball that follows you in game and makes objects float. Like, is that all in Artyom's head? Is it some energy based being created by the amounts of power released from the warheads and people dying?
You mean the anomaly that blinds him at times in the Dead City? Yeah I’m not sure it’s not said what it is, but there’s theories, 1 it’s just simply hallucinations due to how much radiation he is experiencing. Or 2 the light is almost a beckoning call from the Dark Ones who might be living in the city, helping guide Artyom to get to the medicine for Anna. Could also be something the Blind Ones do to ward off enemy threats getting close to them, the phone ringing and floating objects are the Blind Ones though, that’s their power. No idea honestly about the floating energy but wish there was an explanation
@@WiseFish correct. I should've better worded myself. The thing that gets me confused with that giant energy ball though is that I swore to have seen the Blind Ones become sorta "incapacitated" or become "distraught" when in areas with both. As for the floating objects, I'm not sure that the Blinds are doing that. I know that in spots I've seen human remains float up and towards the outside of buildings where the giant energy mass is while it projects the spotlight like lights around as well. And moving close to the windows by it cause your Geiger counter to up with lots of the green radiation sparkles. As fof Dark Ones, some are present, but I'm not sure where the voices originate (maybe inside your head) and it's just you and the energy mass. Just so many unknowns.
Great video
Absolutely chilling, no pun intended
