Step-by-Step Guide:
Select and Arrange Boards: Choose and arrange solid boards, considering grain patterns and colors for an attractive appearance.
Prepare for Glue-Up: Ensure all components, including clamps and flattening cauls, are ready before applying glue.
Create Leg Assemblies: Cut and assemble the legs, incorporating lap joints for added stability.
Join Leg Assemblies: Connect the leg assemblies using crosspieces using pocket screws.
Construct Lower Shelf: Create the lower shelf, making notches as needed for a perfect fit.
Craft Shoe Rack Slats: Cut out 16 thin slats for the shoe rack.
Attach Shoe Rack Slats: Glue down the two outside slats, two inside slats, and four in the middle of the shoe rack, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
Add Drawer Runners: Glue and attach small drawer runners in place, ensuring they align with the legs for smooth drawer operation.
Craft Drawer Boxes: Cut out and assemble drawer boxes with rabbit joints for strength and durability.
Measure for Drawer Faces: Measure and cut drawer faces to the appropriate size, adding chamfers for a finished look.
Attach Drawer Faces: Secure the drawer faces to the boxes, leaving a lip underneath for easy pulling.

I really like how you lean towards glued joints vs screws. It looks great and really strong. One of the features I hate about store bought cheaper furniture is all the screws/bolts. I made your stool design and it's super strong but light weight. Obviously pocket screws are sometimes necessary, but substituting with dowls and lap joints just look cool.
That dresser stand turned out great Steve & I see that you survived the recent zombie apocalypse! 👍👍

SOOOO, I just did my first glue-up... and wasn't pretty! Now that I watched this video again I came to realize the cauls should be tightened BEFORE the compression clamps AND the compression clamps don't need to be so tight they nearly leave an impression on the wood!! Lessons learned and hopefully one day I'll be as perfect a woodworker as you :):):) Great video and thanks for keeping it down to earth for us mere mortals! :)

Thanks for the design Steve. It served as inspiration for a coffee bar for our breakfast nook. Built ours out of red oak (to match our other pieces) and rearranged the drawers and shelves. I also followed your lead on the drawer construction. Another great tip. Long time subscriber and really appreciate your videos!

Another great video from the man himself. I love Steve's approach to woodworking and his narration. One thing that really stuck with me is his line, " No one is going to take a tape measure and measure it". Hi Steve , Great video as usual. However a word of caution in regards to expansion and contraction. I built a Carlyle Lynch hooded cradle out of air dried cherry. I cut the through dovetails on Saturday. The next day I went out to the shop to find my dovetails were misaligned by about 3/16 inch. I had to totally remake the headboard from scratch. Lots of extra work. I found out the hard way when connecting wide panels with dovetails make sure all grain is running the same direction.Duh!!!. Lesson learned. Great project . Love your channel.

I’ve never seen that type of a clamp before. I believe they’re Kreg brand. Are they just a wider/longer version of the similar clamp but they only have about 4 or so inches of clamping width?? I looked in your info section, didn’t see a link. Nicely done tho!

02:00 When gluing & clamping the boards, I guess biscuit joints or dowels joints should work best here (instead of only gluing).

Steve - Question for you: Making that same glue-up board, what situation would you use dowels to reinforce the glue joints?

Can you wear the mask in this video for long durations without fogging up your glasses?
For 30 years, I've tried many mask / safety glasses combinations and my glasses will fog up in the middle of the cut if I'm also wearing a mask.
The mask in the video looks like it might have exhaust ports pointing far enough away from the glasses to mitigate fogging?

I really like the look of this! The one thing I really aspire to is having this sense of understanding each step of the way. When I build things, I tend to see something after the fact that I completely neglected- grain running the wrong way, etc. But these videos help give me the third person view I need. Thanks Steve!
I think we can all improve our skills just by slowing down and being intentional with every step. It's always the smallest details that have the biggest impact.
I was thinking the same thing! On his podcast he talked about having "extra body parts". It would have been awesome to dedicate a 17 min video to do a 8-second blood-scene at the end.
I was watching some older videos, and noticed some tools spray painted different colors. Any reason for that?
Does anyone else hate those stupid stickers on the wood?
stickers are ok.. but our local store attaches them with 50 staples like a lunatic.. Im always woried i missed one.. i don't use a table saw but still having a miter saw hitting one of those turns it into a bullet.
I don’t use box store wood. No stickers. Look for some s4s if you don’t have a jointer or planer. Good luck!
They're less annoying than all the ads in this. I didn't bother watching the rest of the video after the second one. I think I'm heading toward being done with youtube.
I'd happily deal with stickers if I could buy CHERRY! in a DIY store (the only place that's going to put on a bar coded sticker) in the UK 😂

When you do a glue up like this the boards are in direct contact with the pipe clamps does the glue squeeze out that comes into contact with the bar clamp and the wood cause black marks on the wood and if so how do you get them out?
It can definitely leave black marks that can be difficult to sand out. I try to leave a slight space between the panel and the clamps. You can also place a sheet of waxed paper over the pipes.
I like to sand my drawer runners and the bottom side edges of my drawers to 400 grit and wax them... makes them slide really well :)

I love your videos, but I'm a little confused. At 15:25 you appear to use the fence with the gripper to do a long cut. I thought that was a no-no? Isn't it better to use a miter gauge or crosscut sled (or miter saw?) for a cut like that? Genuinely curious if there is some mitigating factor that means this is safe.
Yeah I think he has just enough material to keep it flush against the fence, but it’s borderline to me. Never used a grippr so maybe it give enough consistent force against the fence in this case, but wouldn’t attempt that cut guiding it by hand the same way.

Great project, and I think your hand made drawers are the closest to old ways of making them using modern glue and nails. This is a perfect beginner project too. This is the kind of furniture that is so refined down to the basics of form and function that it's just a few pieces of wood, and does everything it can with that wood very efficiently, and therefore becomes almost... perfect!

I especially like the simple, minimalist design of this. 'Essential', even 'elegant' comes to mind. Light, airy, no cumbersome, wasted wood, all chunky and clunky. This is as refreshing as a glass of lemonade on a hot day -- the opposite of trying to choke down a bowl of heavy beef stew in the summer heat. And I'm certain that if I think real hard, I can come up with even more metaphors.... 😎
7:48 I thought you were always supposed to orient the grain of the dowel to match the grain of the wood it was going into.
Not sure if that level of detail is noticeable to most people. It reminds me of electricians who like slotted screws on outlet face plates to all be horizontal lol!

You could certainly buy them, but making them is more rewarding and less expensive. And traditional!
