    Nice analysis. Both Ahsoka and Baylan switch styles frequently through their fight.
    While Baylan mostly stuck to a Shien/Djem So hybrid, Ahsoka changed forms more frequently, especially at the beginning of the fight where she was testing Baylan. From the moment she ignites her blade we can see her go from form1/Shi-Cho stance, then to Niman, then Soresu, then in taking a page from Anakin's playbook, she settles back into Shi-Cho --but only as a 'feint' to confuse & throw off Baylan, because she strikes first with a Shien manoeuvre.
    Which is why Baylan let out a gasp after their first exchange as he was expecting to parry Shi-Cho strikes and was thrown off guard.
    But he's also a quick learner and didn't make that mistake again for the rest of the duel.
    Ahsoka actually would have won this fight if it wasn't for her picking up the mcguffin and injuring her left hand, and she absolutely ran circles around Baylan when she started employing Ataru; - after that though, she was too distracted to concentrate; between her weekend state, then Shin & Sabine showing up compounded by Baylan's fierce downward strikes & her running out of room... well there she goes. Next fight will be completely a completely different ballgame though, with her mind not distracted by mcguffin devices and worrying about her delinquent Padawan. 😆🤣

      Good analysis but kinda flawed how I saw it was ashokas first assault was just completely blunted by baylans raw strength. And the second assault Ashoka does she is again overwhelmed when baylan starts to put in elbow grease. Ashoka then switches to ataru to get around baylans strength. This does work for a little bit until baylan grabs her arm and throws her and then pushes her into a corner and then tries to use dun Mach, Ashoka gets anrgy and baylan just allowed her to kick him? Not once not twice but three times?? That’s the only part of the duel which was really weird and stupid. Especially when we just saw baylan just counter everything Ashoka did.

    Jedi Survivor implements this battle philosophy well. A master of the single blade is a balanced dualist who is prepared for any scenario, whereas someone less skilled would have to choose a style with a certain strength, and thus a certain weakness.
    I main dual wield bc I like high agro and speed, but I often have to dodge attacks instead of blocking due to weak defense. I think I’ll pick up the single blade after this!

      @@bobf5360because there is a very important piece of data that is missing from this video and discussion. Maybe it's just so subtle that lots of people seem to be missing it. Baylan is out would seem a master gaslighter.
      He took the upper hand from his very first words. "Anakin spoke highly of you". We saw from episode 1 that Ahsoka can't deal with him being brought up. Hera, who is practically her best friend, casually brings him up and it shattered the moment. For her enemy to not just bring him up and but to keep talking about him again and again to speak of what he became and then to expose her vulnerability that she would have almost certainly not shared with almost anyone it affected her to the point that she ended up striking out at him in anger.
      Remember what she told Sabine in episode 3 "anger and frustration are quick to give power but they unbalance you.". All through this fight he landed verbal strike after verbal strike on her completely unbalancing her. Which is seen when he tells her that "your legacy like your master's is death and destruction". Those words finally shattered what little balance she had left and she attacked him in anger. That was the moment she lost the fight. Even if she hadn't burned herself she wouldn't have been able to regain her balance. A necessary factor for a non dark side user. And even though Ahsoka was reading into the dark side seem most prominently when she slams shin into the henge (and possible force chokes for for a moment before hand). Ashoka herself is not a dark side user.
      Baylan was such a difficult opponent for her because he found her weakness and exploited it long before blades were ever drawn

    • @dustingre8
      @dustingre8 Před 9 měsíci +3

      @@sakisaotome6753 I still believe that Baylon being strong or op is simply due to the fact a lot of people aren’t putting it together. Ahsoka would have went at him with all she had, using both light sabers and her most affective fighting style if she was there to kill Baylon, and I think she would have easily succeeded. She was there for the key and needed one hand available to grab it. Baylon saw this and he felt it gave him the advantage. Then after burning her hand, he knew she would no longer be able to revert to her dual blades thus making the statement about her making a big mistake.

    • @sakisaotome6753
      @sakisaotome6753 Před 9 měsíci

      @@dustingre8 The problem with that idea is that ahsoka had other options in regards to the map. She could have tried to force push it off the alter or even slashed at the alter so that it would prevent them from using the map while still keeping it safe. she also could have just dropped one of her blades when she was close enough to grab it. and then pulled it back to her when she got a chance. but she never tried any of those. honestly i think she was just so focused on baylan she wasn't thinking straight. she didn't even really make any attempts to go for the map until much later in the fight. Basu
      She knew that he was jedi trained. As the padawan of Anakin skywalker everyone in the order would have known about her just as everyone knew about him. that means that it would have been common knowledge that she is preferred jar kai by the time that she left the order. If she was thinking straight, she would have started like this and then swapped to the single bladed form that she was using. it wouldn't be something that he would have expected, since she is so well known for being a dual wielder.
      Moreover, Baylan was playing the role of defender and Ahsoka was on a countdown timer. There was no need for him to attack her. in fact, the longer they didn't fight the better it was for their cause. Baylan simply needed to stall long enough for the map to finish uploading to the ship. As long as Baylan could keep her from taking/stopping the map, then any tactict that he used to delay were good. once she grabbed the map however he was forced to switch tactics. he could no longer rely and pure defence. the fact that she burned herself was certainly a huge advantage. but the fact that she got through his defence made her a liablity to his mission.
      She could have easily started with 2 blades adn then swapped one handed without fear of him trying to attack her in the couple of seconds it would take to stow her second lightsaber away. This is why i say that she was too distracted by her Anakin issues to think through her fight clearly and it only got worse the longer the fight dragged on until he got to the magic line about their legacy being death and destruction and she flipped a gasket. That moment in which she gave into her anger was the moment that she lost. she literally schooled Sabine about that just 1 episode ago. "Anger and Frustration are quick to give power, but they also unbalance you." she fell into the same trap that Sabine had been falling into during their sparring session.
      i used to on board with your idea that it was just because she needed the free hand to grab the map, but she literally could have tried to push it off the alter first to stop the upload and then tried to get the orb.

    Thank you, I have tried to defend Ahsoka's use of one blade in other comment sections. I could not explain it well enough and people often use how Ahsoka managed to strike Anakin in their duel using two blades. Your analysis helps show that for most of the fifth her two blades were a hindrance. When Ahsoka got the strike on Anakin she had managed to actually put some space between them so she could get the running start and leap to strike him. For most of that duel though, you are right. Vader was pressing her and closing in to use his greater power and leverage and it was clearly working.
    When Ahsoka's hand was injured while dueling Baylan. You can see when she could not use a two-handed grip that Baylan easily was overpowering her. She actually had to use the force at the end to hold her blade since she could not use a two-handed grip.
    I would also argue that even though she quipped that Anakain had never mentioned Baylan. That does not mean she was not aware of him. I do not know enough about Baylan Skoll, but it is possible as a duelist he was known for easily defeating those who used a two-lightsaber style. She may have known that with the terrain and this particular duelist, she was better off using one saber.
    People forget that Ahsoka is NOT the brash young teen from the Clone Wars. She is older and wiser even more so than in Rebels now. As this video points out, her encounter with Vader would have been a huge lesson. If Ezra had not used the world between worlds to rescue her, Vader was about to defeat her despite her striking him with a heavy blow. We also learn she took Sabine as an apprentice. As far as I know, that is the first time Ahsoka has ever taken on a padawn. Taking on that kind of responsibility changes you. As it changed Anakin.
    One reaction channel put that they are portraying Ahsoka as boring. I could not disagree more. They are showing a level of growth we would expect from Ahsoka. Especially given all that she has been through. You still see evidence of that brash young teen in her mannerisms and she still will make those quips. But she is older and wiser. This generally comes out as more reserved.

      I recall reading somewhere (can't recall where) that the talky-talky thing the Sith/darksiders do is actually a combat technique. The idea is to get into the opponent's head just enough to disturb their focus. Since connection to the Force relies so much on focus and attention anything that rattles your Force wielding opponent's concentration, even for a second, could be just the opening you need to defeat them. The more the darksider knows about the opponent, the more effective this battlefield "Hannibal lecture" is likely to be.
      Dooku- "Yoda holds you in such high esteem. Surely you can do better."
      Vader- "If you will not turn to the Dark Side, then perhaps she will." (whereupon Luke snaps and goes full Skywalker Rage Mode)

    In classic samurai movies there is a battle before the battle, where fighters size each other up and analyze eachothers techniques while they stand ready. Some anime's play off that and a battle of the minds will occur where a samurai will yeld before a sword is drawn because they know they cant win. Ashoka and Baylin has that kind of a fight in episode 4, the switching of multiple stances was brilliant. One person chooses a form the other counters until either a weakness is found or impatience sets in. Ashoka moved first against Baylin but not morrok. Masterwork of non verbal story telling.

    Her burning her hand and most of her focus put to getting the map off the stone, kinda gave Baylan the upper hand in this fight. If she didn't go after the map, this fight would have been completely one sided. Ahsoka at this point, is the most well trained sabre duelist in the whole galaxy...trained by the best duelist to ever live. Baylan honestly doesn't stand a chance with her focused on the fight. Thanks for the videos. I enjoy your channel. Small disagreement (from someone who practices martial arts with different weapons). The use of two blades does not necessarily "sacrifice ones defensive capabilities". The use of two blades requires extensive training to strengthen ones forearms and can be very effective to set a wider defense radios as well as serve as distraction to create opportunities for cutting/slashing or piecing movements, as well as controlling multiple opponents attacks. When facing strong(er) opponents the use of two blades might become very hard as blows from the opponent would be much more difficult to block; hence, redirecting the energy of the blows is a better option, if the choice for the two blades is still desired. There are other aspects to be considered as well but this gives an idea of what I wanted to express. At the end of your video (Anakin's fight) you illustrated some of what I mentioned. Anakin was much stronger than the female opponent and he made that strength turn the fight on his favor. In the case of the Ahsoka fight, she was blocking too much and losing. She should have deflected and used her faster movement capabilities on her favor. That duel was very well created overall, since Ahsoka was to lose on the episode.

    It's also interesting to note that Ashoka was only on the backfoot against Baylen after she burnt her hand and could no longer use her sword with two hands.
    Also on her usual use of two lightsabers when she was a Padawn Anakin made it a point of her learning to fight with only one lightsaber as it was noted that most saber duelists that use two lightsabers become reliant on the second blade and will be at a disadvabtage if deprived of it.
    As far as her level of mastery she's likely the most proficient and experienced Duelist in the Galaxy at this point, I say this knowing full well Luke is kicking around somewhere, but to that I say Luke hasn't had a fraction of the experience Ashoka had

      I’d second this opinion regarding mastery with the blade. However, Luke’s sheer affinity with the force would balance them both as equals (at this point in the story). Great viedo. I've wondered why she only used one saber against them, she has done so for a while when she is in a duel. This acually makes a lot of sense, I noticed how hard Baylin's blows were on her yet this didn't even cross my mind, that she needed to have both of her hands on the same saber because of phycical streangth, not even when he over powers her after she can't use both hand did this occur to me. Why I never notice things like this ia getting depressing. I remember that duel between Anakin and Barris, how Anakin owned the duel with a single saver, after he ditched the second one. This is why most Jedis and Siths use a single blade, unless they are not in a duel and fighting many opponents at the same time.

    I agree, that Ahsoka using one blade was a way to understand and study Baylan's fighting style.

    It's also a good approach in that, by this point, Baylan should've known how Ahsoka fights in general. She's been known for fighting with 2 swords since the clone wars. Baylan would've had the advantage cos he'd know how she fights. Ahsoka's information on Baylan, on the other hand, was limited. All she had was the security hologram from episode 1, and that's against blaster wielding opponents. The only thing she knew about the guy from that was that he is patient, methodical, and preferred to let the opponents come to him. Her going with the 1 blade approach was brilliant in that she didn't give him anything to work with and reset the playing field.

  • @Treisiess
    @Treisiess Před 9 měsíci +2

    Even on a more open field, I think she may have the same issue as Qui Gon did. Ahsoka is neither as small or young as she used to be. Now this could just be due to Rodario's irl build, however, if we look at Jedi such as qui gon he has a relatively sturdy build and is older. This makes Ataru more strenuous on him meaning he will tire out faster as opposed to someone like Yoda who is small and would be considered a toddler at qui gon's age similar to little grogu. Even at 800 Yoda was pretty nimble and energetic in ataru due to his small stature meaning less energy needed to expended.
    There's a notion that a large stature will make you slower as seen in the anime dragonballz when trunks uses a supercharged version of super saiyan giving him boost in power but bulkier muscles that weighed him down. However if you are used to moving with a larger size then size shouldn't matter. It's more about stamina which tends to lessen with age and even then there are two types: Aerobic which is long term and anaerobic which is short term. In a fight anaerobic is generally more preferable because it is about explosiveness while aerobic is about longevity. Gamers may recognize as burst dps and sustained dps, one ends the fight the other drags it out.
    Ataru is better in short fights but shien and djem so are better long term unless faced with soresu which is a form for turtling. That's why obi wan did so well against anakin.

    I just concluded that the simple fact is that Jedi were often trained to disarm opponents more so than Inquisitors and Sith who are more aggressive. So there is a disadvantage to using two lightsabres as you cannot keep a firm grip on both compared to holding one with both hands. Further to this, Ahsoka is much older now and has to draw more upon the Force to be as acrobatic therefore a more reserved style is needed when her focus needs to be on bracing herself for Force based attacks and predicting her opponents movements.
    There may also be some connectin to the fact she's been spending time with Luke. By the time of the Empire's fall she hasn't recieved any lightsabre training for decades and without someone who can stand back, to be a critical observer, anyone training by themselves can develop bad habits. Luke isn't familiar with all the forms but had trained most recently with Yoda so it is possible that Ahsoka has found she's now more skilled with a single lightsabre when facing a single opoonent.

    In summary, one lightsaber allows for 2 hands so more strength allowing much greater defence exspecaly against much stronger enemies,
    According to star wars lore back handed sabers were better for defence exspecaly blasters (which is complete rubbish)
    But the 2 sabers alow for much faster swift strikes great for area denial and multiple opponents (and more chances to attack or block) but can't withstand the strength of a form 5 attack, such as Vader's sabernetic suit and balins great saber good for leverage,
    Both opponents also denied Ashoka room and space to move making here ataru defence and attacks much weaker
    And against marok she uses shien for defense, then when he preps a powerful spin attack she switches to dejem so to attack

    If we check there starting stanses : Baylon seems to use Form I Shi Choo and Ahsoka seems to have the same than Ben Kenobi (of Alec Guiness) at the begining of the fight.
    Form I's movements are basic but if you add this to the dark side streight of Baylon, it can be an effective way of fighting (after all, Kit Fisto was one of the best duelist during the Clone Wars).
    Regarding Ahsoka, then it would be a Form III Soresu? I'm a bit confused on this one :)

  • @juliobro1
    @juliobro1 Před 9 měsíci

    I was looking for a logical explanation as it's not evident from the episode. This is very interesting.
    Nevertheless, I didn't see confinement, and even if there was, along the Clone Wars, Ahsoka used both her blades in almost any space.
    What's more confined than a ship's hallway full of pirates?
    I totally expected in her fight with Marrok to use both blades. Then, when he starts spinning the saber, she could've switched to one blade.
    This would've been more in character, as she likes to taunt her opponent. Also, would've looked badass.
    Regarding Baylan, she arrives with him seated and cloaked, she could've ignited both her blades.
    Then, as he stood up and removes his cloak, she takes a better look. He ignites his saber, she measures him. He's larger and stronger, so shifts again to one saber.
    Now, there's a better understanding of what she's doing.
    As it came off, to me, was an excuse to have her loose, as most of us understand she's way better with two sabers.
    Maybe he could've damaged her small saber or thrown it to the sea. He did grab her arm and, with sheer strength, threw her in the air.
    Then, she's forced to change strategy.

    She does it for multiple reasons. The main one is when you’re fighting 1 on 1 they are probably expecting her to use the double form because they study her, she changes forms to throw them off, also she can use it when they are already fighting, to switch back and forth giving the edge. Imagine you fight someone the whole time with 1 saber then switch to two. She’s just trying to get in there head which is why they added it to show her intelligence. There is also a lot of lightsaber forms with each having strengths and weaknesses, maybe she knows something we don’t again highlighting her intelligence. I think the show creators just wanted her to seem smart being she’s on the run and has to survive

    It’s because the actress is not capable of looking fluid with two blades.. trust me .. I’m a 4th Dan in Kendo and it is not easy to make this look good let alone actually be sufficient in this style. You can’t even start training in two sword till 3rd Dan and even then it is super limited.
    I’m a fan and only giving an actual practical interpretation.

    The reverse grip against the double saber is so smart and then the samurai stance against Baylans knight stance with broad sword

    Great analysis. Ahsoka force powers will always be held back until she can come to terms with Anakin turning to the dark side. Episode 5 will likely show her spiritual journey and her acceptance of dark side Anakin. Completing her Jedi training and coming out of the WBW a jedi and evolving into ahsoka the white.

    The idea that using a single form is obsolete is also implied with the inquisitors first dual with kanan where he points out kanan favouring form 4 to a ridiculous degree possibly implying most the Jedi alive at the time of the inquisitors probably had out of necessity hybridised their forms to survive so long

    dual-wielding somewhat limits your extension of reach, as well, and Baylan has a tremendous inherent advantage through his height and the type of blade. A lot of defensive technique with dw revolves around using 1 weapon to deflect while striking with the other and that's not effective against an opponent properly utilizing brute force combined with keeping you at bay via longer reach

    And this video is exactly what Ahsoka wanted Baylen to feel so she could get past him to the map, which she did. Games within games and Skoll was not the only one playing 😉

    Her style switch to throw Marrok off and then taking him down when he lunges mirrors Obi Wan killing Maul in Rebels. Filoni gave us the same scene in live action

    I think it was more likely related to his physical size and strength. Djem So utilises the physical users strength and muscle in the blows and using a reverse grip in two hands provides less strength to block and divert them. She is also quite skilled (possibly a master) of Soresu taught to her by Kenobi who was the undisputed master of it. Also, with a long lightsaber blade like her opponent her Shyarn wouldn’t have been able to be very useful in offensive strikes
