  • This episode is about learning the SCA rules just before Pennsic 48. I talk about how I like the SCA compared to Armored Combat. Also, I finally tally up all my fighting experiences since the last journal entry.

    For a video titled learning the SCA Fighting rules, I'm astonished that there isn't a single rule mentioned. just your experience. Honestly i was interested in trying this out, but i still don't have a clue about how the game is played. thanks dude

      Ah, well, hopefully I can maybe make a future video about that then :) A lot of the basics can be found online, which might be a faster way to find out at the moment with the quarantine going on. It isa lot of fun and to just get into it to try it, isnt that costly.

      I currently play amtgard a foam fighting larp, and the rules seam similar but I’m curious about the tournament fighting. What is a legal hit, I’ve seen videos of people get hit in the head and sometimes it counts other times it doesn’t.I’ve seen people get hit in the torso a/o leg and drop to a knee. is it you just beat each other until you’re tired or is there a point Based system. I have even checked the SCA website for the rules of combat and I struggle to find the rules there too.

      @@yourfavoritprican Are you still looking to figure out the rules (as I see this is a year old)? If you google "SCA Marshal's Handbook" a .pdf should get linked.
      That being said, I can answer a few of those questions:
      It is hard to judge shots as a spectator, especially if you are not familiar with the game.
      The official ruling is that we are wearing chainmail hauberk over a padded gambeson and boiled leather arms/legs. A blow must be struck with sufficient force as to be able to penetrate said armor. The only person who can officially call the blow sufficient is the individual being struck by the blow. Does this lead to some iffy shots being called "light" yep. But those fighters will quickly make a name for themselves, and not in a good way.
      Blows to the head/body count as a kill (great weapons kill with shoulder and hip shots as well). Blows to the limb leave that limb incapacitated so you typically drop to your knees for a leg shot and put your arm behind back for an arm shot.
      Illegal target areas: 1 inch above the knee and down, 1 inch above the hand and down.
      Also, face thrusts do not require the same amount of force as a thrust to the body. All of these rules are safety precautions as we use solid rattan which can cause serious damage to said areas.
      Hope this helps!

      @@yourfavoritprican The rules are pretty simple. A "good" blow to the head or torso with an arming sword is a kill, to the leg or arm and you might fight without the use of that limb. (most people go to their knees when hit in the leg because that is easier than hopping around on one leg). Blows to the face only require minimal force to be "good."
      With a longsword, polearm, axe, or mace, if the blow is on the hip or shoulder, that also counts as a kill.
      A"good" blow is what is imagined to be effective against an opponent in an iron, open-faced helmet and mail shirt and leggings. This level is a little variable from area to area, but there is a generally accepted average level and if you don't accept blows at that level, you will not be allowed to fight.
      The legal target area is the whole body, except the hand up to one inch above the wrist and the lower leg up to an inch above the knee.
      No stabbing unless you have a patted "thrusting tip" on your weapon.
      In melee, you must "engage" the enemy before you can attack them. This means that they must be aware of your presence. Usually this means that you must make eye contact. There are little details and technicalities to this rule that you can find, along with the other rules, buy searching for "SCA rules of the list."

    I'm training for Pennsic 2023 RN I already bought a full suit of plate Armor, I have yet to invest in Gambeson, Chainmail and Weopons I'm so excited for it this'll be my first Buhurt fight ever.

    • @BachataKnight
      @BachataKnight  Před rokem +1

      Nice! There is a tent set up (usually) for all the steel fighting. Is that what you mean? Since the mass battles etc aren't buhurt fights. I'll be there. I'm brining my steel fighting armor. And even if you don't have all the armor parts you want, usually someone has something that may be borrowed OR we can do duels knowing where gaps are and make those non target areas.

      Thankfully your local fighters groups (in my experience atleast) have loaner armor for people wanting to try it out. In the old days and even now, People made beginner armor out of water barrels and rivet them together using leather or a sturdy cloth.

    Hmmm a limb point system with rattan. Do people use 18 gauge larp gear?

    • @BachataKnight
      @BachataKnight  Před 8 měsíci

      I'm certain that 18g is the minimum for rigid steel armor. Other than head and hand protection.

    "blows" are judged on your honor, if IRL, a shot with a real weapon would penetrate are and injure or kill, you treat it as an injury or kill...if in dought, ask your opponent...
    BTW, I first fought in 1983.

    • @BachataKnight

      👍
      Typically I figure if there's doubt, I just give them the kill. Unless its some tournament with a reward or need to win, then I have no problem standing aside or getting to walk back to the resurrection point. Nice! Thats a great amount of fighting you have under your belt!!

      @@BachataKnight the sca assumed armor is chainmaille and a nasal helm, i call pretty much anything to the lower face or eyes, and anything solid to the upper, but i agree with you, if in doubt, just call it.
