I use closed cell foam from automotive interior applications. Its meant to soften car accident impacts ie. Unbuckled people slamming into dashboards. Also, luxury cars have these anti vibration pads thats are used to quite interior noise. I highly suggest getting that material. It adheres and has a very slender profile. Any bell type helmets are acoustically solved after slapping some of that shit around the inside. Its cheap. Go to u pull it. Remove interior panel, harvest quality foam and impact plastics.

I don't know anything about the inner workings of the SCA, but videos like this would be perfect to be pinned in the sections where new fighters would see it. Why spend hundreds of dollars on a helm, only to cheap out on padding that will protect your nugget? Most people don't realize how life changing concussions can be. Everyone in SCA, EMP, HMB and related activities should see this. We are long past the days when wally world smurfhide camp mat foam is or should be acceptable to pad a helmet. If you can spend anywhere from low three figures to low four figures on a helmet you can spend a few more bucks to pad it properly. Some of the set ups I see in SCA appall me. Yes, they are "legal" and as a marshal I have to pass them but what was OK in 1989 when I started is far from smart padding and strapping set ups today.
the blue stuff he shows there is Shocktec gel foam I believe. shocktec.com/ Another foam I recommend because its self adhesive, a bit cheaper and easier to work can be gotten here nadler.us/instock.html#misc Both offer good protection when used in conjunction with a well padded period liner. I think the Shocktec protects better but I have found its a bit of a pain in the butt to work with
Thanks for putting this up. I'd like to see a lot more discussion and theory about the methods of padding helms. The amazing part to me is what folks can get away wtih and not get injured in one case, but another person or a different time the effects are very different. I am about the experiment with the arming cap/foam combination myself, so this was seen at the perfect time. Thanks again.
How do you feel about the padding that the Army MICH helmets use? Newer SCA fighter for me and thus far I have been using that as padding since they come as the large bricks and you can velcro them into the helmet and they were designed for anti concussion.... but may not be the best option still for a round house claymore hit?
Heyyy if you have not had a concussion your not fighting... Good video 18 years I have always just used Walmart blue foam and I have had 2 concussions. Every new fighter should be required to watch this

If you ask a concussion expert, as I did, they will tell you this: no helmet prevents concussion. Helmets prevent traumatic brain injury. Repeat: helmets do not prevent concussion!
