It's hilarious getting half way through this video and realising that this is in my own barony and I recognize several people.
AN TIR!
I was thinking the same thing. Good to see you Vulc
I realize that this video is 5y old, but it blows my mind (everytime) that the fact that the costumes looks strange in high res, is just because I’m used to it in paintings, and that people of the time would actually have seen it like this (kinda at least). So cool and so mind blowing
The last minute sewing totally got me! That's always me on the way to an event... I also ADORE your circlet (and doubly adored how the berries matched your necklace!)
It looks like you had a great time :D
It's not an event until you finish your last minute sewing in the car. It's not a project until you bleed on it ;)
This looks so dreamy! I’d love to see a tutorial about your hairstyling with the head wreath, and how to make the wreath (if you made it). These styles look so perfect for the holiday season!
Morgan, you have so many views on this video!!!From another media geek in the SCA thank you thank you thank you. This is exactly the kind of exposure we need
I loved everybody singing The Arrogant Worms. Made me do a flashback to Guide camp in elementary school. This was lovely to watch.
As someone who grew up in the SCA, but overseas from you, it was really cool to see how another group set up, and what your tourneys are like! I even recognised some of the songs. :D
Thanks for sharing this with us, Morgan! My husband was involved with the SCA in his early 20s, before we were together. He still has his suit of armor and siege weapons, which he deployed to wonderful effect during our kids’ annual Cub Scout dinner last month. 😀 It’s great to have a glimpse of these events, as my husband has mostly talked about the large staged battles. Though as a twenty something man, he has said he was impressed with the ladies’ *ahem* costumery as well. Love all your your work, thanks for sharing us!
If you have a free weekend someday, I am sure your local group has some fun events for you to check out in person!
It's a ton of fun for us ladies. Not only is it perfectly okay for women to fight if they want, but there's plenty of stuff for us to do. And who doesn't have a deep desire in her heart to swish about in fifteen yards of velvet? (giggle)
Like just chainmail outfits? When I was little my dad wouldn’t let me go to the major events. Now 25 yrs later, with teen/preteens of my own, I understand. Lol
A short explanation for those outside the SCA. A king (or occasionally queen) rules over everywhere the SCA is active. The ruler is chosen by combat, and reigns for 4-6 months. The crown tournament to choose the next monarch is held early in the reign, and the winner serves as prince(ss) for the duration of their predecessor's reign. The point is to give the tournament winner a chance to learn the monarch's job before they reign.
After a year of lockdown it's so incredibly wonderful to see an event. I miss my people! Heck, I miss people period. *sniff*
Ah!! I found your channel recently through watching Bernadette Banner's sewing videos- and now I discover that you SCA! That's epic! I am way down South from you, in the kingdom of Ansteorra. I've been involved in heavy fighting and Bardic here for the past two or three years and it was so cool to see pieces of Canada's Crown List and hear "One for the Leaving". Thank you for posting! ♥️
Why, this looks like An Tir.... THE BEST KINGDOM IN THE KNOWN WORLD!!!
You've apparently never been to Atlantia! Cry havoc and let slip the CRABS OF WAR!
Atenveldt for liiiiife.
clearly the best is avacal
Clearly you’ve never been to Æthelmearc! :P
Draco Invictus!
How delightful. I miss my SCA peeps. Here in the Outlands, it's 50 plus miles. Too far for regular trips. That looked like you had much fun. :-)
I've been watching for a while, and I was like, I bet she's in the SCA. She gotta be. And I kept waiting for you to mention it specifically. Hadn't seen it in any of the videos I had watched up to now. But woooo hoo! Its fantastic to see that someone as incredible as you plays!
Omg my family and I always go to those events, sometimes we camp there, sometimes we just visit but it's always amazing!
I remember battling the other kids and building little huts in the nearby forest and coming back only when it got too dark to see and then we sat by the fire and sang songs with our families and ate.
That was the best time of my life!
This is so nerdy and cute. Love it.
Seeing/hearing folk music is always really interesting for me, because I've been raised going to science fiction conventions where there's a lot of filk music (which originally grew out of people singing, and then later parodying, folk songs at said science fiction conventions). My favorite songs tend to be a very folk style tune with space travel lyrics, and going back to the origins for a quick comparison is really cool. Not nearly the same connection with the lyrics, for me, but still awesome to hear... Thanks for including singalong snippets.
Ah seeing the sca sign is always the best 💜 i was born in to it and meet my fiance in it
Awww
That heart beating feeling of excitement when you see the sign for the event.
I love the blackwork on the one lady’s cap, I had to pause and show my mom
I love watching Medieval Camping Event and Canada.
Last minute sewing: sign of a true Scadian, lol. (Greetings from Calontir!) (Also, I just found your channel. I look forward to going through your videos!)
I have family in the SCA (Kingdom of Meridies). Thank you for a WONDERFUL depiction of a fantastic organization. ❤❤❤
ah this is so amazing, i wish i stuck with this back when i first was introduced in 2010. but now im trying to get back into it and i am so excited. loved your video as well, going to check out some more of your videos!
Oh, how I love the SCA. Member of the populace of Hawkwood in Atlantia!
Greyhounds are period, right? Are yours rescues? :)
They are absolutely period! There's lots of pre 16th-century imagery showing them, especially hunting! Mine are ex-racers, from the Florida tracks.
I thought I had read somewhere that they were period, but I wanted to double check. Thank you for adopting them instead of shopping for them; there are so many unwanted pets in the world, it always makes me feel a little better when I find out about rescues finding loving forever homes. And your pups look so happy, too!
Greyhounds are sight hounds and are period. They are commonly competed as coursing dogs at some SCA events in various kingdoms.
They are definitely period, though nobody is going to give you grief for bringing a dog that isn't period.
This looks so fun, I can’t wait to do things like this when I’m older.
The grounds are soooo beautiful! We go to Potrero War (in Potrero, California), Great Western War (in Bakersfield, California) and Estrella War (in Queens Creek, Arizona)… it is SO great to go, and relax and disconnect from cell phones and modern life for a few days! Thanks for sharing your experience!!
I just adore the man playing the recorder... because I’m a profesional playing recorder and it awesome....
It’s been a rough year of quarantining. It was so good to go back to watch this again and see so many friends! I will really be happy to go to an event again, hopefully this year!
Thank you so much for sharing this!! I've wondered what happened at this type of event. Thanks!
Wonderful! I can’t wait for my first camping event.
Your dogs are so pretty! I just commented from my older channel, but now I'll search your tutorials and see what I can snag for my support playlist. Great insight into the event. Loved it. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Morgan's hubby looks so handsome! Like he strolled right out of a period film he fits in with the aesthetic perfectly, and Morgan is so gorgeous and talented. They are one of my favorite couples. I ship them
This was a pleasant surprise to get to see Emerson's fight where he became the heir. I was out of the SCA at the time, so never saw it. :)
Thank you for this video. I am in tears. Happy tears. Someday this Trimaran would love to go to an event in Canada. I imagine cool weather, mountains and no mosquitoes!!!
Lol sleepy morning you is adorable! 😂
That looks like so much fun...
You and you tent and the event look amazing! I’d love to see more of everything. From setting up to what you do throughout the day! I’ve always been interested in the sca but have never really participated. Hope you’re having fun!
Fascinating!
Lol that snippet of the last Saskatchewan pirate near the end was cute :)
Singing Arrogant Worms in the kitchen! That is how you know you hit Canada. :)
I know I'm late to this whole episode, but I just wanted to say how happy I am seeing your SCA video. I love SCA for a different reason, mostly because my parents met thanks to the local SCA. So I'm super happy to see this. Also I want to see if I can find a local one to join. Thanks for the wonderful videos!
This looks so fun
I miss going to SCA events so much. Quarantine sucks.
But think how wonderful that first SCA event will be when you're able to be together again.
Wow! How neat! We've thought about attending some of the Rennaisance fairs around the desert southwest area where we've been living for awhile now, but just haven't gotten to yet. I think they would be lots of fun and your video demonstrates that beautifully. Glad I found you in the FB group. I'll come over as my new channel at Crafty Creators so that I can pop one of your tutorials into my support playlist there.
I grew up in An Tir a very long time ago now i'm teaching my kids alot of weaving and sewing in Ansteorra but I'll always remember where my dad started us!
Ooh I heard a snippet of the Last Saskatchewan Pirate! Love it!🍁
omg id love to see more of these vlogs
Looks like fun!
This is the coolest event ever!!!!!
I loved this!! Couldn’t make the event. Nice to play eye spy for people I know.
I just recently found your channel, and this video made me so happy! My husband and I are in the SCA (East Kingdom), and we are very much missing our usual events, so this video gave me a nice little taste of what we've all been missing. We would normally be at Pennsic War right now, and I'm absolutely wishing I could be in the 16th century.
Is East Kingdom Wisconsin?
A wonderful video it looks like a lot of fun you look like you really enjoyed yourself 😺
I do civil war stuff which I adore! I love medieval stuff and if I could afford it then I would do medieval but civil war is quite expensive already 😂
The SCA is actually less expensive and some of your camping kit will transfer, and if you have a canvas tent you're probably okay. Unlike the CW units where you have to have it all right or you can't play, the SCA lets you make "a good attempt" at pre-17th century clothing and play along. I've seen a ton of kids running around in simple tunics over sweatpants and perfectly modern tennis shoes. Sometimes your local SCA group keeps a stash of loaner garb, or will know someone who has a lot of extras, so you can borrow something til you get something else made up.
What tent is that? At camping events, it would mostly be me and my teen daughter, so that looks like a good size and easy to assemble for us.
We have a Tent Smith's Officer Marquee, with 4 foot walls. The 5 foot is the same price, so I'd recommend that one so you don't have to bend down as much when entering/exiting the tent.
Morgan Donner Thanks! I'm new to the SCA, and your videos are super helpful! I've subscribed! ☺
@@MorganDonner that tent is gorgeous!!! Looks like so much fun, i wish there were events like this close to me in Australia 🇦🇺 I’d love to go!
Beautiful dogs!
I just discovered your channel, and its v cool to see you're involved in SCA stuff! I had been sticking my toes in that verrry slowly for a while, then much faster after I started dating someone whose whole family is Very SCAdian, though all has been cut off due to COVID. Its weirdly almost more intimidating now that I'm close to people who have been doing it longer, bc for some reason my anxiety brain tells me that by knowing them i should know better how to SCA even though a) the person im dating is more fighty/bardy than the garb/A&S stuff i'm more interested in and b) i don't posses magical knowledge-osmosis powers and that is a ridiculous expectation for my anxiety to give me XD
Its very nice to find channels I can use to sort of self-learn at my own pace that have good content for SCA period, both as someone who's not-so-knowledgeable on historical things, and as a beginner sewist (sewer?)
This is wonderful. Would you be able to make a video taking a closer look at your tent and what goes into the camping aspects of your trip. I hope you'll make more of content about Medieval camping in general as well.
I’d also be interested. I’ve known people in the SCA for many years (I grew up not far from Pennsic) but I’ve never been to an event, and this looks waaay more like modern camping than their descriptions had me picturing.
I love the Athos vs Styrkarr intro.
This is making me miss my camping events (even more). Damn you 2020!!
Hello! Saying hi from the Barony of Seagirt! I just found your channel and I'm so happy! Keep up the awesome work!
Hi there!
hey, sensitive question: are there many people of color who attend camps/ would they be welcomed without hostility? Ive always wanted to attend a camp but am honestly afraid. Ive been met with a lot of hostility online, mostly people arguing about non white people "existing" in medieval Europe (silly i know). I would love to hear an insiders experience if you have any. thank you!
There are very much people of color involved in the SCA.
here is facebook group that can give you more information facebook.com/groups/244585312689198/about/
There are indeed people of all races in the SCA, although I suspect that the proportion of minorities is less than the general population of any given area. I don't have any hard numbers to support that, it just seems like there are only a few POC at events.
That said, you are absolutely welcome! Anyone I know in my local area (myself included) would be absolutely HORRIFIED to hear that you have had bad experiences online (or in person) in SCA groups based on your race, that's absolutely awful! Unfortunately, it seems like there are assholes in any group of people, even if I don't personally know any. You are welcome, we want to have you, and you are 100% free to wear clothing from any time or place!
If you are ever in the Pacific Northwest of the US, I would love to take you to some of our local events!
thank you so much i appreciate it!
Sorry this response is a little bit late, but I wanted to chime in as a person of color who attends SCA events fairly regularly. I go to events just about once a month and I can attest to the fact that the SCA is very welcoming and accepting of people of color attending and participating.
In the SCA I've never had problems with people disregarding or even arguing against my existence, and I've had several friends go on long angry rants about how people of color have existed everywhere at virtually all times in history (and pull up evidence to prove that fact) and how it's digusting that people argue against that, so I would say that hostility you've met online more than likely won't be something you face in real life. And as a side note, I'm really sorry that you've faced that online, I've had some similar experiences with groups other than the SCA and it's incredibly hard to deal with.
Like Morgan Donner said though, there are assholes everywhere and I've had snide comments thrown at me here and there, but in the almost 4 years I've been in the SCA they have been few and far between and have been handled swiftly by friends and the proper authorities in my group.
I'm on the West Coast so hit me up if you're near by! :D
I know I'm commenting a lot, but this is so awesome to me! But also, I love that this vlog include a crown list.
ahh rewatching this and really missing all the sca events 😭
I honestly loved when the winning night kissed the lady after throwing down his helmet XD
I just found your channel and I immediately searched 'SCA' because I knew if you weren't already involved, you should be! I see a lot of Panther Primitives tents here. I used to work for them and had a lovely time meeting all the SCA folks.
Very interesting, please upload more when you can!
Going to my first war (GWW in Caid), so revisiting your old garb stuff because I still haven’t made anything despite the piles of fabric I have…. Just gleaning inspiration. :)
Just found your channel and this is the first video of yours I have seen. Also to find out that you are in the PNW as well means you very much have a new subscriber!
British Columbia, my home! Didn't realise there were SCA events up here.
Love this video! I've always wanted to go to SCA events but I'm always a little nervous about it. These look so fun I think I'll have to!
No need for nervousness, we seldom eat people, unless it is a well documented Arts and Science entry. :-)
Vitari_Allie just come to one. We are generally very friendly and most events have a special fee for those coming only for the day.
most are friendly folk- just attempt some early renaissance to roman period clothing and just go meet people !
I LOVE YOUR DOGS!
I love them too!
Your hounds need some beautiful tooled leather mediaeval collars 😍😍
love seeing all the late period stuff... my household is primarily viking, and seems to be the most popular in the EK so its nice to see landsckenecht(sp!?) and blackwork ...my sewing skills are basic with minimal interest in getting better (have too many other interests like most SCAdians) so - someday i will have money to commission a kampfrau :P
Being a typical fighter i started counting missed blows then reminded myself as i have squires and ladies that just cause it looked good does not mean it felt good. lol I enjoyed your video and the very period look at your crown tourney event! Good garb! you did a great job keeping non period items out of camera view. Well done! Thank you. Earl Krotuas, Trimaris
I grew up in a small So-Cal Ren Faire circuit, so a bit different, but definitely still looked like home :D
Ahhh please make more sca vidwos. Your the best
Ah yes, the time honored reason of hand seeing on the way to an event lol
IT would be really fun to see a video on your tent! It looks so complicated!
So jealous of your glamping set up ! I finally camped out at my first war at Lilies it was 95 + 50%+ humidity and I'm glad I wore 100% linen , about died ! Thank goodness for the Broken Harp! When /where is this war ?
That was great Morgan.. Thanks. It was just like seeing our events here in Lochac (when we had events before the sickness) except your trees are all wrong. No gum trees (eucalypts) and there is this weird long and lush green stuff under your tent. I keep seeing people I know in the crowd then realise it is just the garb style and body shape. Odd.
Gabrielle Hastyngs of the Marshes
I watched this when I am missing pennsic too much. Thanks. I am sated
Me, a Canadian: Oh boy I hope they show what Canada looks like, I hear it's really pretty up there!
Greyhoundies 🙏😍💖
Same state! As I was watching, I thought I recognized some of the place names north of the border, then got a shock when I recognized the stretch of freeway on your way home! I'm located 2+ hours south now, and miss it dearly. Anyway, what an awesome video! I've wanted to join SCA since I was 13, and it looks like a ton of fun! Maybe I'll look into my local group again.
Go for it! If you want to go to an event, I recommend either September or May Crown, they are some of my favorites!
It's amazing how one clip of a short stretch of road looks so familiar. I live most likely in the same country as you or the one just north of you. I'm looking forward to meeting you in passing at a local event and expressing my gratitude. Mostly I cannot find What I want, cheap costume quality, or just not willing to pay the price. Your chanel, especially the stuff you made for your significant other was perfect for me to get started. Please make more male stuff. I love watching you and Bernadette Banner clear audio and beautiful outfits highly instructional but dresses are not really my thing.
Oh, I'm nostalgiacking so hard for my SCA days! I know it's just a hop skip and a jump to get back to the Barony if I really could commit to the time and effort. For those who are the uninitiated, in an active Barony or Shire, one could have a different event, group or class every night of the week if you were so inclined.
I have been going thru your older videos when I saw this one. It is really nice to see how SCA camps are done in US. I have been member of SCA over 22 years now, but I have attended events only in Drachenwald (Europe). Anyways, you have a nice video here about SCA. And it is nice to see dogs at the event too. I assume they are also experienced campers?
As someone from Saskatchewan I was not expecting to hear the last Saskatchewan pirate....
IM GOING!!!
2nd time I watch this vlog and I've only just noticed that people are singing 'J'ai vu le loup, le renard, le lièvre' at 3:22 ! ... in a rather amusing american accent ;)
Yay!! I love *meeting* Scadians! If you're going to Pennsic, let me know. I'd love to meet up. :)
oh my made me miss SCA!
There is a renaissance fair here in East Tennessee, I have never been, looks like fun, I may go this year if they are allowed to have it
0:19 I love seeing this normal life, not done up fancy, vlog bit. :)
You are so darn pretty, but your personality is even prettier :) cheers!
I so miss camping events this year...
I just started watching your videos and it makes me want to get back into making them! I do Dagorhir and might just vlog my upcoming campout. :D
Do it!!!!
Slowly getting through your videos. I went to an SCA camp once, Phoenix 1992.
I love your tent! Is it difficult to set up and break down? Thank you for all that you do, it is so helpful to someone wanting to get into this sort of thing.
It's not difficult, but it does need two pairs of hands! If I am going to an event by myself, I often bring my small modern dome tent instead, which is very fast to set up. I am glad the videos are helpful! :D
