      @@HolmesHobbies LOL when you kept saying in this video that you 'don't need' another SR I kept thinking to myself "Holmes sounds like he's trying to convince HIMSELF." LOL I just knew you would not hold out. I was really lucky to be one of the people who got one of the first 50 X controllers from Luna. Great regen and sine wave. Apparently a number of those test X controllers failed so SR made a change that is very different on the one you got. The engine braking on the first 50 feels like a 125 two stroke in third gear when you let off the throttle. At around 5:25 on Matt's review of the controller you can see how much went back into the pack after a very short downhill. czcams.com/video/f-hY30xl-rs/video.html
      Apparently SR shut down that amount of regen because a full pack going downhill would overload the pack.

    This video, and my other recent readings about Sur Ron, make their engineering seem pretty sweet! If I got one in San Francisco, the hills here may argue for a bigger back sprocket as you've done.
    Although, the difficulty you found when pulling power cables out of the battery reminds me of the lockable battery on my Haibike -- the securing fasteners are not _that_ strong, so for longevity just roll the bike inside, plug in, and avoid all connector stress.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 5 lety +1

      i'm still very happy with the bikes. I would agree that san fran hills would be a good match to lower gearing

    Try upgrading the bike with asi controller and better battery that could be made from your 2 batteries. You will get a lot more power

  • @johnnyzee383
    @johnnyzee383 Před 3 lety

    @12:10 you mention that the larger gearing makes the bike feel flat in the mid range...simple reason why is because with electric motors, the more load, the more the controller puts power to the motor, thats why in comparison to a gas motor, electric motors fall off the faster they go, and in this instance, you have less load because of the larger sprocket hence in the middle of the range you would have less power....Sorry I put this comment down before watching the rest of the video..you explained it better than I did...lol

  • @PowerhouseOffroad
    @PowerhouseOffroad Před 5 lety +3

    I know it's not related to this video...but I thought I would post it here to get your attention. The dyno/motor work you did was really interesting. I know from the comments posted...buyers wanted to see certain motors and comparisons. I hope you gratify us with an upcoming video on those. I have the luxury of having almost the whole Holmes product line, but for the consumer who is holding off on an upgrade because they're confused on getting exactly what they want, the info would be really beneficial. And in related terms, I know I won't be adding to my collection until I see some sort of proof that say a Magnum is going feel and act SUBSTANTIALLY better than my three crawlmasters or Puller pros and I can get visual reference to values and test numbers. I hope that makes sense. Thanks John

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 5 lety +3

      All my new motor vids will have dyno charts. I haven't circled back to the magnum yet, but it's on the docket. The only trouble with dyno information is that it doesn't convey the 'feel" of a motor, which is IMO the most important part for rock crawling. It will show the magnum having more torque density and power, but won't convey the snappy yet smooth feel of the large rotor. They are like a brushed revolver in many ways.

      @PowerhouseOffroad Před 5 lety

    I'm fine with range and weight but power is only 65cc power witch I could live with but too expensive. The 2350 from factory. Luna adds another 1500. If they offer it with both sets of wheels and tires and better controller and some better suspension, or a controller and a extra battery. not to mention their price on parts or much higher than what they are in Europe virtually unavailable here. I do like their upgraded controller though Cindy had off of Chinese websites easily 2600. Same Luna warranty that Luna has to back up because they are there at US Distributors distributor

    Hello, you really mixed things up - only thing that Field Oriented Control can give you is a precise motor control (less torque variation, less vibration and noise) and possibility to choose right motor control strategy. For example, if you need speed, it can give you more but will sacrifice torque (btw this control strategy is called Field Weakening), or maximizing torque (MTPA strategy). FOC also better utilize available energy (few percent higher efficiency), so you can ride slightly longer.
    Anyway, it's a nice bike. Next year I am going to buy one. I want to build something like this, but I change my mind.
    Best regards.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 4 lety

      FOC can help more when the motor bEMF is sinus. 6 step commutation with sensorless works fine for trap bEMF motors. The efficiency gains are normally had over a basic sensored controller that cannot do zero cross commutation. Such as the old Xie Chang controllers. FOC helps greatly compared to them! But compared to an efficiently designed block commutated controller and trap motor, the FOC does not always win due to switching losses . I have not tested the bEMF of this motor.
