    Nice. I think you're right about the look. What's key I think is that it looks like a mountain bike. It means you can take it pretty much anywhere and you won't get too much grief from the bobble hats. Bikes that look like dirt bikes are looking for trouble.

    Good review. I have an Oset 24 electric trials bike that I have set up for technical single track trails. It only has 1400 watts motor, but climbing is VERY good. Like, it will do stuff my skills can barely handle. I have ridden enduro bikes and downhill mountain bikes for over 30 years. I would love to see a shootout between the two. On black diamond single track trails, because the Oset only goes about 20 miles per hour. You could gear the Firefly to suit.
    The Oset is bomb proof, with a good skid plate. I have beaten on it for a full season with no issues.

    Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They are very much appreciated and very informative. As far as checking set up goes, I worked for Harley Davidson for 20 years and everything that came from Milwaukee needed tightening, trueing, and checking. Can a person you’re a service manual with torque specs? These new electric bikes are definitely a thing of the future. Wonderments !! I Will be looking into them. Look super for camping. Thank you very much again. God bless. Post script; at least the neighbor isn’t bitching at you LOL

      I haven't found torque specs, but I assume all the small 4 and 5mm bolts are the standard 5nm that mountain bikes use. It's funny that half the responses are telling me how shitty the vids are, and the other half is telling me that the vids are informative and appreciated. Thanks for being on the appreciative side :)

    the fastest way to stop a bike is definitely not through a stoppie, keeping the back wheel on the ground and using both is the fastest way

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety

      On a lightweight short wheelbase bike like this, the rear can lift before the front washes out. On pavement, maximum stopping power would occur through just the front unless the rider got off the seat to fight the rear lift. You are absolutely correct in off road riding situations though, where the front will wash out far before the rear lifts. Good point of discussion :)
      I did get the front brakes broken in enough to do some stoppies with a little coaxing from my body weight. This ride broke them in the rest of the way czcams.com/video/Puvlwi1ASaA/video.html

    • @brainisfullofnonsense8183
      @brainisfullofnonsense8183 Před 6 lety +2

      On flat horizontal ground, the cosine of the angle made between the combined center of mass, the front contact patch and the horizontal road going to the back determines maximum stopping force without flipping. You can increase that amount by shifting the effective center of mass backwards, down, or adding to it (by adding to it I mean adding the mass of the rear tire and member through unloading the rear suspension either partially or completely). Partially means the rear wheel still has contact with the ground while completely means a gnats rear end between the pavement and rear tire. Any more rear wheel height than that is reducing the stopping force. How much rear suspension unloading is optimal depends on the suspension travel, rider weight, etc. ...
      How about chop the back of the saddle off so you can slide off the back and drop your weight down and back then apply front brake until the back wheel barely lifts off the ground? The bike would need a rear fender, and you'd need some armored pants, but doable. ; )

      Not at this time. Totally possible with a different controller, but it will wear the first stage belt reduction faster. It normally doesn't add a ton of runtime to use regen brakes, and I would rather wear out brakes than the drive belt.

    Def considering picking one of these up. I grew up riding Dirt bikes so this is pretty appealing. The price is right on for entry into electric bikes as well. Considering the Stealth H-52 will set you back 10k. I do want to see what you come up with as far as the skid plate. I ride at my family ranch in the West Texas hill country. We’ve got pebbles, boulders and everything in between out there. So yea the stock plate def won’t keep it protected.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety

      It is an entry level bike in many ways, such as the suspension and brakes. Nothing new for entry level bikes. But the motor and controller and battery are good quality. With a stronger controller (and BMS mod) this bike can become a beast. The motor and battery can handle twice the stock power without overheating. It would beat on the batteries harder and reduce the life a few years, but that's the cost of power. Like replacing a race jug more often than a stock one because it puts out more power.

    What's the range looking like? Other reviewers get close to 40 driving it the way you did in the video. Is that about what you get?

    @stonezone Před 6 lety +3

    Yeah man, thanks for the reviews. I’ve had mine about as long as you and keep checking for content. So far you’ve got the best reviews and info hands down. So on my bike I put some dh pedals in the back slot and along with some Sherco trials bars the peg to grip distance is identical to my other primary bike (gasgas gp). I also swapped out the front forks and wheel with some manitou Dorado experts (27.5") and a 24x3" duro wildlife tire). I had the same issue with the front brake so swapped it with an avid I had (needed to use the stock hose since it's in the right so the avid cable was short). What else... Upgrade the light to some badass Chinese LEDs and swapped out the already nice throttle with a beta throttle body. I think that's about it besides the bar ends and whatever headclamp came with the forks. I'm thinking about going up a few teeth in the back since it's a bit too fast for the trails here. I happen to have a vec300 controller unused I should also on but not ready to tear into it yet. Would like to hear more about your charger, I fried and replaced the 2 thermistors on the AC side yesterday (maybe get a voltage step up and use one of the 52v power supplies I and powering my icharger with)... Anyhow, thanks for the review. Subscribed!!

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the feedback and comments on your bike setup! I'm concerned that mine might have a damaged battery at this point. As noted in the first vid, it had the battery totally dead when received. I didn't consider it important until reading the manual, (that I had to get from Sur Ron), but the air switch was on when it arrived. Have you tested range in EP mode yet?

    • @stonezone
      @stonezone Před 6 lety +1

      I haven't tested the range but it's really good as far as I can tell so far.... i've never really had it below 50%. when I got it, I think it was around 70% but with the "air switch" on as well. I have off and on results with feedback/LunaCycle but if you can get with Seb (lead CS technician who i've reached via sales@). What's happening with your battery? Mine seems to be great, lasts really long, not really any noticeable sag although i've not taken it lower than 40something percent. Did you see the range test review where the ozzie guy takes it to 0% then keeps going around the block a few times?

    • @stonezone
      @stonezone Před 6 lety +1

      I dont think a 26 would fit on the rear but maybe. I put stock sherco bars that have a good bit of rise on it, as well as manitou forks that are for 27.5" rubber (with a 24x3) as well as pedals on the rear most insert and the peg/grip distance is identical to my gasgas gp. I'm 6' and it feels really good, maybe a little small but in a good way. IMO if you are even considering this bike, buy it. Its not perfect but for the price its an insane deal.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety +3

      Stock charger is fine, but large and not good for keeping on the bike due to vibration damage. I like to have two chargers, one at home and one at work. Ebikes.ca also makes a charger that is fully potted and can handle vibration, being mounted directly to the bike is a possibility with it. But for now, we just keep the charger at home.

    GREAT review - super helpful ! Q:'s for you (or others on here) 1. Advantage of e-bike is usually silence, this seems a bit noisy - where does the noise come from ?? straight cut internal gears ?? or ? 2. How does it compare to Bultaco Brinco (rear motor, similar ££ here in EU/UK) .. I'm guessing better from most reviews - but good to see back to back. -- keep up the good stuff :-)

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 5 lety +1

      The noise is coming from the motor, due to the motor controller switching frequency and shape. At a distance it can't be heard very much, but there are controllers that would knock the noise off completely. This bike will handle much better than any hubmotor bike.

  • @LaciPucak
    @LaciPucak Před 6 lety +1

    Don´t you think putting an aftermarket motor-controller to this bike would cancel the engine noise? From what I know, controller has significant role in this :)

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety

      Absolutely. A FOC or sine wave controller will cut that noise right out. The current production bikes have a sine controller, because I got a green one it was a "first run" and had the older controller. A bit peeved about getting one that didn't match the specs on the site, but I'm going to try and get an updated one.

    The charging plug is likely different because it takes a lot more juice than most of the ebikes on the market. It would probably fry most small chargers. What did Sur Ron say?

  • @charlesswank6401
    @charlesswank6401 Před 6 lety +1

    If you swap out that front lever/caliper from the budget Shimano hydraulic stock (it's actually a really good brake but too small for that bike up front) for a Magura quad piston and a Shimano icetech 203mm rotor and you'll be much happier on the brakes. Caliper/lever combo front only is about $100 and about $35 for the rotor. Magura also sells ebike specific hydro levers. So it'll cost you more to get the caliper and lever separate but you'll have a nice, clean built in motor cut-out switch instead of those stick-on magnet thingies.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety

      The brakes actually haven't been too bad once they broke in. I haven't managed to heat fade them with normal riding.

    • @charlesswank6401
      @charlesswank6401 Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, I've been surprised at that brake. It's like the lowest level hydro they make and it does better than some "nicer" brakes in the stopping power department. Modulation isn't the best but it works reliably and safely. I have one the front of my Kona trail bike with a 180 rotor. All I had when I did the build but it's been fine so haven't bothered swapping it. One other tip I forgot about. If that is a 2018 caliper you should be able to fit the XT icetech pads if you do run into heat issues. That and a rotor is a cheap but effective upgrade. If you notice an icetech theme with me that is because I'm a bigger lad at 200lbs and that stuff works awesome for me.

    Typically in the moto world you make bash plates out of alu... They just didn't spec the correct type or thickness of aluminium or the design wasn't tested thoroughly. Nice review :-)

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety +1

      Its thin, that is for sure. You know, I guess my other bash plates are aluminum too. But 1/4" or thicker. Its simply easier to make one out of steel, as I don't really like to weld aluminum, don't have a tempering oven, and don't want to set up the mill for it.

      @sustmi Před 5 lety
