- WHAT BAD POWER STEERING PUMP NOISE SOUND LIKE, WHINE
In this video we will demonstrate what bad power steering pump noise sounds like and how to know if your power steering pump is bad. When power steering pump start going out they will develop whine and later they may become even more noisy to the point that the power steering pump may not even create even pressure. There are 2 types of power steering pumps, some are hydraulic power steering pump, and some electric power steering pump. In this video we will demonstrate what noise bad power steering pump makes. The same noise could be caused by having air in the power steering system. Try bleeding your power steering pump first.

The actual noise starts at 1:08 (for those who want to skip to that part).
Thanks
This was incredibly relieving to watch. My car's been making a noise comparable to this for a couple of weeks now and I was paranoid it was something extreme. This was very informative, thank you so much.
How is that relieving? A new pump costs upwards of $600 nowadays. I would hardly call that a small fix. You could buy an after market or refurbished one but they usually die prematurely.
This video really helps we were thinking what was that noise. Lucky I found this video and now we know its the power steering noise. Thanks for posting this it really helps!
Thank you mine doesn’t sound like that! I’m so happy I found your channel!
Thank you for this video. As a woman I am trying to learn more about cars and simple fixes so videos like yours really help. If you can make a series of these that would be great!
Learn how to raise your kids so they can be mechanics. Females..🤦🏿♂️
@@staypositive1010 your attempt to be misogynistic backfired as a display of just sheer stupidity lmao. So instead of a woman learning to do it herself, you want her to continue to be “useless” and just have someone else do it?
Weird.

@@septiembrelaluna2226 forgive him I mean his name is SPECIAL ED 🤦♀️
Shut up you're on every diy with that dumb ass comment 😒
Thank you! Thought it might be my rack but that noise is identical. Will a rebuild kit fix it? New bearings and seals etc?
This was HUGE! Thanks so much for getting this info into a four minute video
thank you SO much you're the only person that helped me properly diagnose my car 😂 i just bought my car like 3 weeks ago and i don't know much but i thank you for this!!
Thanks you for this video. Definitely gonna get my pump checked out
My mazda 6 makes a noise which is almost the same. For now it can be heard only when going down a slope such as the ramp of my underground garage which is quite steep. I go down with the brake pedal pressed all the time, so the car doesn’t accelerate and when I start turning the wheel left and right, it makes the noise. The problem is it doesn’t happen on level ground or when the slope is not steep enough and mechanics don’t usually have access to steep slopes like my garage ramp to test it out so they rely on my description. No luck so far. They say everything is fine but no one ever talked about the power steering. Could that be the problem?
i hope you keep helping people and you become a millionaire
If you turn the air conditioner does it make noise to or only when you turn wheel
Excellent video! Thanks, it helped me a lot.
quick question guy's, can a cheap hose on the pressure line cause power steering noise or do I need to just replace the power steering pump and hose? it's a 2003 bmw 330ci, it dosen't whine all the time only when I'm turning and that particular hose vibrates violently.
thanks mate, mine noise is very low and not all the time but that's the noise and vibration through steering column only when I'm changing lock like parking or stationary.
Thanks for this video. The steering on my Toyota Land Cruiser is starting to make a quiet humming noise with some a gentle vibration when turning either side. Do you think it could be the pump?
Do they share the same PS with a non turbo 2.5 Cx7?
Thank you for this I have had this noise for a little bit and have no clue what it was went to the mechanic he said it was tight steering and it’s just been getting worse
Its possible it was caused by s litttle leak, he wants you to burn the pump and/or racket pinion steering. ($150-$1500) dependant on what you destroy.
I heard it at the belt area when i told a partner to turn at full turn and i saw the belt resisting back and forth . mind you the fluid is full and no leaks found
Belt wasn't loose either
@@randyr.8536 was it the pump?
hey! i know this video is old, but to anyone watching it now, this weird whining sound can also be your power steering fluid! be careful and get your pump checked, but i have a leak and its always my power steering fluid. the sound stops right away when i put new fluid in
Thanks. I will try a new fluid and see
Im fixing a Nissan maxima 1987 and my power steering has gone bad been slowly fixing it up since it sat on the drive way for 7 years idk if my power steering is clocked
I have a question I did the seals on the power steering box and bled the pump like you did in a diffrent video it’s still making a little noise and when I take the cap off of the fluid it’s bubbling
I got a 2003 Mazda 6 and I been thinking this was what was wrong because of not just the noise but it’s eating up power steering fluid I took the car in about a month ago and they said it was axels and rods and I needed that fixed follow by an alignment which would cost up to $500.00 😒 are they wrong or could it be both? Also how much to get my oump fixed?
Could old power steering fluid also make some noise? My car just started making noise today, It's quieter then this one though. Once It warms up It stops making the noise.
We changed My mates one and before there was no sound, after old fluid changed it started making noise.m
so was it? I have a lexus es350 with 170kkm, the pump should not be replaced so soon..
Thanks guys
My heart dropped when it cut to dude messing with it on the ground with a engine next to him🤣
Me too. I thought I had to take out the whole engine 😭😭
😂😂😂
@@xotwod9894 was like “you know what, my radio is way louder than that pump”🤣

My car in steering oil tank has bubbles on top of oil . It makes same noise should I change the pump or it could be leak in steering box ?
Thanks
Great video :)
Thanks for the info. For my ford fiesta 1996 mk4 the problem was lack of oil. Solved by filling it. :)
Duhh and i would lnow to check fluids in vehicle before trying to figure out if i got a bad prob under my car hood🙂🙂🙂
I love how you showed us where the power steering pump was and then the next shot was the motor dropped and on the ground
My mazda 3 make that noise and vibration only when car is driven hot.and u make sharp turns.is it also pump
The same thing happens in my case but only after my stupid mechanic "Fixed" my high pressure line leak, It starting doing the same noise after he fixed the leak but I lost power steering completely in the end, I drained some of the fluid cause the guy overfilled it, and the next day the noise went away..
A week after I turned the steering to full lock and it did the same noise again but went back to normal when I switched the engine off and back on.
Do you think this would be a Bad steering pump or a leak fix that was badly made and ruined the whole system.
the car is an 05 Altima 2.5 with 310k miles
I have a Honda Accord it only makes this noise when there’s not enough fluid I have a leak in the pressure hose but I don’t think I would need a new pump if I keep putting fluid the noise goes away so should I just replace the pressure hose ?
Update just replaced the pressure hose everything was fine the noise went away drives smooth
while I agree that you should not be making those noises and typically when being bled with proper procedures it would require replacement if there's no progress however still a cheaper alternative and also it likely caused would be contaminated fluid that's built up contaminants inside the pump are good proper flush throughout the whole of the pump fixes the issue more times than not.
Thanks bro i change oil for 5time and again just like this is are sound but now i know were is problem 👊
If the pumps gone, and you csnnot afford the pump, drive without power steering
@@YourDadBitch
Why does this sound like very poor advice?
@@letscuthairtoday9038 its a joke lmao
Free of cost information excellent thanks.
My car is making this noise, and the steering wheel is very hard to turn when parking or getting out of driveway. Once the car is in motion the steering is fine. And also when front wheels are lifted there is no noise and the steering wheel is very easy to turn. Could this be air in the system of a bad pump. Please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it thank you.
Thank you for informations and your video it’s help people ! I watch your video from Canada 😁👍🏽
How do you know if it's the steering pump or whether you need to change the Steering pump fluid ?
I’m sure your vehicle is fixed by now but there are videos on CZcams on how to flush out your power steering fluid
This literally happened to me on my drive to work! (I’m a very new driver and was using my parents vehicle.) I was so nervous that I had done something wrong so seeing this helps and I’m glad I now know what it is that causes that god awful noise!
I feel the same using my parents car scared
He's wrong. it isn't the pump. it's the steering gearbox. Do more research.
Take a shot every time he says “guys” 😆
The 5 people that liked this died of alchohol poisoning
Jfjsoxi I teied butt I’m wasted lol
Could a tight belt cause this to make noise as well?
My 2000 pontiac grand Prix started making this noise. Could it be possible I only need to add power steering fluid?
You can try to swap out the old fluid and bleed the system, but there's no guarantee that's gonna solve the issue
I have the same issue , same noise, but when I turn the steering wheel fully the engine drops the RPM like it wanna stall but not .
1999 vw polo engine 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I have this same noise but only when the car is stationary or at very low speed, otherwise there would be no noise. Is it still bad power steering pump? Thank you!
Mine doesn't sound exactly like that. It only sounds like that when it turns. Anf my wheel also vibrates and never holds steady
Wow, thank you dude.
Thanks for this one, and the one after the replacement, to let me know my mechanic didn't do it right. My car is still loud asf days after replacement and I cant make it stop, no matter how much fluid I put in. Sigh.
Than it wasn't the pump but a leak in the line.
@@jaystreet4004 yeah but does the leak in line cause this same noise?
@@e36fanatics if the noise stops when you put in the power steering then comes back you have a leak.
Replaced steering pump, steering rack and bleed air out of system still have this same noise. Thoughts?
I think I may have just fixed mine by replacing the power steering pressure switch
thank you
My power steering only makes this noise when hot. Theres no change in the steering that I can feel. No binding or tightness at all. Without the noise I would not no there was an issue. Any ideas what it could be?
My power steering is making a very quiet noise unlike on this video. It sounds like a toy car but extremely quiet that it can only be heard when the radio is off. Do you have any idea?
Hi....my power steering wheel has an occasional hum....but wheel turns ok....could it be air in the line?
I had a new one put on about 6 months ago it only makes the noise if it's above 2k rpm
I have the exact same problem on my Mazda 6, and the steering wheel is a bitch to turn when being stopped. Can it affect other parts if it's not changed immediately? Thank you!
I’m trying to get an answer as well cuz the mechanic is quoting 1500 dollats
Outstanding
Thank you
Wow, those are some interesting r-rolls there.
The big trucks I used to drive made noise not too unlike this, like forklifts. Is that not supposed to be normal?
What if you step on the breaks? Mine is making a very bad grinding sound.
If you step on the brakes and it makes a grinding sound, you probably need new brakes.
Hi, I have a 2015 honda accord with 18000 miles on it. My headlights are dimming when I rotate the steering wheel while it parked, rolling the windows, or when the ac compressor turns on even sometimes when the parking lights are on. what could be the reason? The car sat idle for almost 2 years. I had a problem twice to start but it worked perfectly fine, in the winter too. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Could be a bad battery or alternator. Go to auto zone for free test
@@MrShadowGhostFox Thank you will do that.
The draw from running accessories like the a/c clutch or window motor takes electricity from the system and sends it to what ever you're using instead of the headlights lowering the amount of voltage in the system.
jimmy patterson thanks 🙏🏽 for the reply, so that means it’s normal right? Because I didn’t notice this dimming changes while driving other cars so little concerned.
My serpentine belt has also busted twice once in 2019 & just in April this year 😢 but guess tge macanicK Failed to realize it could be my pump causing it 🙄
Mine does same noise in the morning but it goes away after driving for 5 min. Fluid reservoir is almost full. I flushed and put new fluid and now it looks dirty. Does that mean my pump is bad.
How much does it cost to replace the power steering pump? Please let me know because my 2011 Jeep Compass is making that noise. Thank you
So u nleed power steering or did u replace the pump
My car is coming from what looks like the belt, but at times it is hard to steer, I put a little wd 40 on pulley, the noise goes away a little, any ideas?

What if mine doesn't make noise when turning at all but sounds like why just while running. Is that still a bad pump or. Plus the steering doesn't feel difficult at all 06 dodge charger rt
I did change the pump but still make noise wht could be problem please help
I’m not sure what to do here because I’ve been to two different mechanics, and both of them want to charge me $800 to replace the power steering pump. The problem is that the power steering pump does not make the noise you are describing in this video.
In fact, when I turn the wheel left and right, it doesn’t make noise at all. It makes a high-pitched sound in my car when I hit the gas. The two mechanics are insisting that this is the power steering pump but I would not know that. How do you know if it really is the power steering pump?
Nice video. Good job.
I have a similar noise when NOT TURNING the steering wheel, as soon as i turn the noise stops, only when leaving the steering wheel still it makes noise. What is it ? I already changed the power steering rack but the noise still present. Help

It's a high pitched whine. Plain and simple.
Ok my honda from what i can tell is not making that much noise. The noise my car is making is so slight, and only sometimes when i steer. Weird
Mine does the same sound only when steering tilts on both sides, no sound in between. Also steering wheel pulls to the different direction when i am turning the car.Would that be power st. pump or anything else?

Yeah check the hoses or the pump itself, you have a bad leak. It could be in the steering rack seals too.
