Scotty Kilmer so i had my power steering pump replaced because of a high piched whining..1 month later it is now whining when it wants to but the tone of the noise is much deeper. The mechanic says it will do it again if he replaces it which is obviously an argument for him to get out of doing it. Could there be another reason why i would hear the noise. Oh and yes it is full of fluid and its a 2007 ford focus
Hey Scotty
I'm so sick and tired of shop and street mechanics fixing one thing and making sure another thing is messed up.
I enjoy your fix it yourself videos.
Just very scared that I might mess something up. I need to fix my power steering leak ASAP myself, Can you sugjest a way for me to get over being frightned to repair my own car?😔
A dildo made from recycled Toyotas
Will that switch throw a code on the dash my car is making as noise when I turn idle or in motion and it’s getting worse now my cars idle rpms are fluctuating from .5 - 1.5
I've been watching your videos for a long time I have a whining noise in the steering wheel in my truck the power steering fluid is full there is no leak what could it be
Scotty my son is taking mechanics at the career and technology center at his high school and we absolutely love your videos! He won’t say it but I think he’s impressed when his mama knows a thing or two about cars which I’ve mainly learned from your CZcams videos! Right now he has a 2005 z71 Tahoe I got him for his 16th birthday that started making a sound when turning at low speeds. I told him to check his power steering fluid and that was the problem :) we’ve also repaired the antenna, the gauge cluster dimmer switch, oil changes, and the fog light button that was broken all DIY
Shut up
You're one of the best video tutorial mechanics on youtube, you make what sometimes is miserable and annoying into a easy task which can easily be accomplished!
Hi Scotty! I don't know much about cars, and I actually just stumbled on your channel as I was looking how to replace a radiator. I found your video, and I really enjoyed it! I have been looking through all of your other videos and I think you are awesome! Not only have I learned a ton, but I really like the way you narrate the videos. Your voice really flows! You'd be a good voice over actor! No joke...thanks again!
I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION HOW AND WHAT IS REPAIRING A LEAKING RACK/PINION,,,,I WAS VERY SURPRISE TO LEARN HOW EASY IT IS TO GET TAKEN BY A GARAGE....YOUR INFORMATION HAS BEEN INVALUABLE SOURCE OF KNOWLEGE...THANK YOU..G.B.
the diagnostic know-how and deeper understanding of what's actually going on that he conveys here is great.
Scotty, great camera angles. You do a really good job of showing what you're working on. Always easy to see. Plus you edit out the in-between stuff that's unnecessary and boring.
Is Scotty the only mechanic that doesn't get dirty when working on a vehicle?
He has a video about him always using gloves when working on cars and I noticed he always has a tarp on the floor where he needs to lay down. Also he’s been doing this so long so I’m sure he knows all the tricks. Ill even wear gloves and have a tarp on the floor to lay on under the car while emerged in bleach and I’ll still come out look like a grease monkey. Haha
He's God tier that's why lol. Grease fears him
Yeah, and he also is the only mechanic show you how do something in less than 3 minutes, and you spend the day watching the video again and again and again and again, to do what he did in those 3 minutes, in that whole day... He's unreal
Plot twist: He has a Nascar team behind the scenes.
Yes
I've watched many do it your self videos on automotive fixes and Scotty Kilmer is the absolute best!
Scotty thanks for your videos & helpful car repair advice! My power steering noise went away & my car drives so much better👍
You're videos are very helpful, keep em coming.
Watching your videos alone gave me a lot of guts and confidence; that I could truly fix my used car prior the temporary registration ends. Thanks to your very educating videos. Saves me money :)
Man. I think you just fixed my life. I can't wait to try this.
Nice video, but the titles are so vague and the fix is so specific LOL
Thats how a lot of his content is. You are spot on
Well that happens with mechanics it tends to be a specialized field
Fix it yourself
Love these videos Your straight to the point
Scotty Kilmer. you do a great job of getting the point and hitting the main points. well done sir.
I have referred to this man's videos for years, getting car repair help for free. Thanks Scotty. Keep yelling at your camera.
Thanks, Scotty! You are my go-to guy. I wish it was that simple and easy to do myself.
scotty have you had any luck rebuilding power steering pumps?
No matter the car or issue I have scotty is the man who gives me the answers. I have a 08 escape and the power steering Reservoir is sealed.
As always, THANK YOU Scotty for your great video!

Hey mister! You're my Sensei. Excellent video as usual. I have a 2006 Honda accord V6 that is a poem in 4 wheels but recently detected a noise on the fluid reservoir so I guess some fluid got to be added. Hope this will be the whole thing. Scotty, your videos are sensational, I enjoy all of them but above all of this, they are absolutely helpful. Thank you so much for your help. Dear Sensei, I bow before you and send you my best wishes from Mexico.
great job man I'm always watching your videos. good luck to you
old smokey moonshine! Went there for vacation! Best stuff around
Love your videos, you make it look so easy. Keep it up 👍🏾
thanks for all your wisdom and time to make this video, you saved me alot of money and im able to make it to work now
Man I love your videos, so damn helpful and entertaining! I'm wrestling with a Lancer that's got an ongoing squeal. I've replaced the belt, found a pulley with a bad bearing, fiddled 18 ways with the tension, but still squeals. Took a look at my power steering fluid, it's a little low and kind of brown so I'll be trying a flush of that next.
I wish no harm ever to come to this mans way ❤️
Indeed
Wow scotty, I saw 1uz fe, that's that damn lexus ls isn't it? I've been suffering from the same issue, rather the only issue with that car.
Good info and not a bad way to end it with some good 'ol moonshine. Subscribed!
I have a 2003 Ford Explorer that was making more of a rubbing sound. this continued for a couple of months when I finally decided to open up the hood and check my reservoirs. It turned out that my power steering reservoir was only about a quarter full so I went to O'Reilly's and bought a $4 bottle of power steering fluid and put it in. It immediately stopped the noise so I am very grateful it wasn't very expensive to get fixed. the reason I am making a comment is because those power steering problem does not necessarily have to be a whining noise. Mine was more of a rubbing sound so I hope this helps someone. Thank you for your good video.
How would I know if its the power steering pump or the power steering pressure switch?
Measure the pressure of the pump by pressure gage. And turn the wheel end to end while its running and reading is ok then pressure switch is fine. More check bypass by close to the gage valve for 4 seconds if pressure go high its bypass valve issue. If pressure go low the bypass switch works.
My daughter's when turns the power steering fluid shoots out can't really see where but guessing the switch?
Scotty, my Audi A4 B6 Makes whining sound when turning wheel after driving for sometime. When i start the car and start moving the noise is no longer there but after an hour the sound becomes bigger and its like rubber without greasing coming form my shock mounting rubber. the ATF level for steering wheel is fine. what could be the problem?
on those, pumps are garbage and just wear out internally and need replacing
Pretty cool Scotty! I'm always looking so forward to your videos. I wish you had the time to do them everyday. I know you don't have the time but maybe one day a rich relative will leave you some money. Take care
Hi Scotty love your videos! So my 98 Camry the rack and pinion was leaking. I replaced it with a remanufactured part over the weekend. It went well and I have no leaks but I have a question about turning the wheel all the way to the stops. If I go all the way either left or right I hear a squealing sound. There's a lot of confusion on the internet what this could be a loose belt a faulty failing pump? Kind of hoping you can clear this up! Other than going to the complete left to right the new rack is working beautifully.
I wasn't able to get at it from the top, need a 17mm stubby to even turn the darn thing on my 96 Ls 400, be prepared for ATF fluid to leak out
Hi Scotty! My 2000 Ford Ranger steering pump used to make a loud whine but after I did a full flush and added some royal purple, the noise is not as loud WHILE the truck is moving above say 10mph. But its still as loud as before while turning under 10mph. And its stiffer. Even louder when trying to turn while parked. There are no leaks or air bubbles that I know of.. Any fix to this?
yea, replace the pump with a new, not rebuilt, unit. Or just live with the noise
Scotty Kilmer Yes will be replacing it soon. Can you tell em which part causes that whine sound?
Scotty, thanks for posting this video.

This is my new fav mechanic
Love the ls400
Answering questions after drinking moonshine ---that will be interesting.. Lol.
Thanks for the help! You have lots of personality!
Thank you this actually helped me unlike the other videos I seen
sometimes you may think your power steering pump is whining but it could very well be a bad bearing on one of the teflon idler or stationary serpentine belt pulley....
Tim Vittetoe True, I replaced my power steering pump on my 2005 F150 and it didnt help. Turns out it was an idler pulley
For your viewers! I had a noisy power steering pump! I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan. I found out the the fluid in the pump was old stuff and contaminated due to age! I began sucking old fluid out of reservoir and adding new fluid. Then i would drive it and repeat this about 6 times. The pump got quiet and trouble is gone! James.
James Sasse sounds easy.
Wouldn't it get contaminated if there's a leak and it's sucking air into the line?
Kim Possible no,,,. Contaminated from age,,,. Should be replaced every 4 years,,. ??? Fluid is cheaper then a power steering pump or a rack and pinion,. If you do not replace the power steering fluid before 80000 miles,,,. You will be putting a rack in by a hundred and twenty thousand miles. ??? Roughly,,,
im gonna try this. haven't seen leakage from my system yet.
Nice video. Quick. Clear. Entertaining.
Love your vids Scotty and your energy.
I came here looking for some help due to a rattling steering issue in my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. There´s a lot of play in the steering wheel and when i go over uneven terrain theres a distinct rattling sound...not so much clunking, but a rattle from the steering column under the dash. Very strange. I know its a shot in the dark, but thought Id give it a try. Keep up the good work Scotty!!!
check the steering column for loose bolts or breaking bearings on the shaft
use a Jack stand Scotty hahaha
1:08 Just learned something new today, never knew that!
Hello Scotty i was wondering more specifics, when you fill the pump and start the engine, do you leave the cap off or put it on the resivour then turn the steering wheel?
Another helpful video. Quick question Scotty, my steering wheel is a full half turn to the left with the wheels lined up straight. Its not alignment because the front wheels are not worn on one side. Steering makes a popping sound when i turn either direction. Is it a tie rod or steering column, ....? Also is there any easy way to check if its a tie rod, 1996 chrysler concord. Thank you
Hey Scotty!
I recently hit a curb in the snow with my 2005 Acura TL. Turned right into a small road at 15-20km/h and all the impact slammed into my left driver wheel. I need to get the entire suspension replaced on the left driver side but something strange also happened with my Power steering pump.
I jacked up the car when I got home and turned the steering from one side to the other. I can hear gushing sounds from my car and my brother told me that fluid was leaking out the top of the cap. (With the cap ON)
After a while, the liquid stopped leaking and when I checked the levels, it was exactly on the "upper" mark with the steering straight. What exactly happened here? My steering feels a bit looser. Easier to turn the wheel. Feels like a new hyundai santa fe in comfort steering mode but I know it should be like that lol.
Thanks in advance,
it messed up the power steering rack too probably, but with all that damage, unless you have full coverage, get thee to a junk yard for used left side parts to save money
Yeah I drove 2 hours out to a junkyard that had a manual TL left side suspension. They're rare to find in Toronto.
Replaced the suspension today and the car feels better. Power steering isn't grinding or leaking anymore when doing a full turn.
Unfortunately the ABS on the junkyard part was busted so I'm trying without traction control...
Mechanic also told me the subframe was cracked a little too which is bad news. I really don't want to spend $1000s+ to fix the subframe if it's drivable. Are there any risks to driving with the subframe a little cracked?
Well, you can go back to a metal junk yard and get a good piece of steel and weld it :). Scotty has a video on welding so go and watch that.
i have same car lol
Hope you had the car on jack stands when you crawled underneath!
I don't
I don't generally it's safer but it's not really necessary if u have a decent Jack and are careful
There was a guy who died several years ago on the north part of the island I live on. The jack failed and the car crushed him to death. A jack is not meant for stabilizing the vehicle when lifted off of its wheels. Jack stands are meant for this purpose.
@@stanwardoshiro no the Jack's aren't designed for this but a descent Jack can stand in for a jack stand for quick and simple fixes especially if u don't actually own stands tho yes u are correct it is dangerous and should absolutely never be done with the dinky dink Jack's they give ubwhen u but a new car
hey scotty!
i have 2 problems
i have a 2016 lexus RX
and today the temps dropped to 18 degrees (Yikes)
i got the car in May, and no issues until recently
first today i noticed the steering column squeaks every few mins in the cold this morning and this afternoon after i started them. but after almost a 2 hour drive, it went away.
is that normal for the the drastic temp drop?
also i hear a faint squeak from the rear passenger side. near the trunk. ONLY when the back end drops as in when i go over a speed bump or a deep pothole. the trunk is completely empty but i have a feeling its the shock? would i be able to hear a shock squeak inside the car?
Mr. Kilmer, I was told more then 40 years ago not to use Teflon Tape on the power steering or transmission connectors and here you are doing just what I was told not to do so question how is the Teflon Tape working out for you is the fluid degrading the tape and later causing leaks or is it holding up over time ?
Don't have a $1000 to fix my ml320 rack pinion lucas was to thick blew my line so i cut the boot off can't fix the inner seal so i made a outer seal with a cut o ring and JB weld no more leak and now when the rack goes in and out when i turn their is no fluid residue on the rack i learned this trick from Star Trek Chief O Brian
Tyrone Williams Very good looking.
Why are you so mad at punctuation? What did a comma or a period ever do to you, Ty? XD
@@BPoweredLove You're not his teacher, nor is this a grading on grammar and punctuation course. 😑😒😴😴😴😴😴
Seriously Scotty . if I revved my car every time you told me...you'd owe me an engine overhaul
Everytime Scott groins, it disturbs me, yet hilarious!
You the man Scotty!!!💯💯💯
Sometimes I think my power steering is whining but it’s just my wife talking.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!!
Scares me seeing you under that car with just a jack under it.
Trust your tools.
this is how man has fixed cars for hundreds of thousands of years since the beginning of time...
And e brake not engaged!
Exactly
First thing my dad reprimanded us (my twin and I), for! Always put a jack stand under the car and let the car down on it! Had a dear friend lose his life because he did not use anything but a jack to hold the car up! His wife found him dead, under the car that had fallen off of the jack!
Looking for info on power steering pump noise saw you face on the video and said yep that's the guy! Love your videos
Thank you for your video. the power steering pump broke on my 2001 Durango in a change it it and let it afterwards however it still making a noise, no more bubble in the Reservour when I bleed it and I'm not losing any power steering fluid either. Could this part be causing the noise the noise, thought not leaking?
Quick question, my power steering on my 2002 Toyota Highlander may be having issues, but I have replaced the fluid but I’m not sure if all the air is out of the system. The steering is stiff when the car starts from cold, but once the car is warmed up it’s ok. And thank you for your help if you can see this.
Thank you Mr Scotty, though I wouldn't be doing it , I have an idea of what could've went wrong. Great video without much delay! Regards, Balan
hi dear , first thank u very much for the wonderful videos , and I have the chevy optra 2009 , the steering well is so hard , Ive cheeks the fluids , the pump , the lines , no thing is wrong , so what do advice me to do
thanks any way .
Classic Scotty!! 🙌🏼🤟🏼
Hello Scotty Kilmer Sometime steering become hard and sometime soft in my Mazda Astina year 1991.
Any idea?
Excellent videos Scotty Kilmer is the best.
Thank u Scotty I like your show keep up the good work
..always learn much from Scotty. Dude...did you get that moonshine in Gatlinburg Tennessee? Awesome~!
You're the man Scotty!
thank you! love your channel
Hell yea Scotty!!! Another awesome vid. That car you worked on was a Lexus LS400 and has a the same 1UZFE motor and majority of the drive train and complimentary systems in common with the Beloved SC400. You Really killed it with this one, all the Lexus blogs are filled with guys like myself searching for a culprit and remedy for this problem. Unfortunately some are lead the way of Power Steering Pump replacement and unnecessary loss of money. I WILL SPREAD THE WORD, CHECK OUT SCOTTY KILMER!!
My steering wheel is rubbing with something, same as brake pad with the brake disc. Do you know what this can be? Thanks!
Scotty is it advisable to change my power steering fluid on an audi a4 with 232000 on the clock?
Go ahead Scotty. U the man
You are great. It worked on my 2006 Acura MDX. Thanks Bro.
I saw a jar of moonshine in the super market the other day. My Gran Pa used to make it and just pass it out in a plastic milk gallon. My Mom told me he took her on a two day ride to his site and explained the situation like this, "There's s mountain lion that lives in the cave above. If he get's us, you get on the donkey. He knows the way home on his own." Americans are hated to a small extent because we are so spoiled. People like Scotty help make us great again through ingenuity and self reliance. Wild Turkey helps me feel great!
Hey Scotty. Love your videos, man.
Quick question: I have the purring/whining sound when I turn my wheel. I was losing power steering fluid so I used some Lucas Stop Leak. Now, the fluid seems to not be leaking but I still have tight steering. Should I try adding more steering fluid or what? Thanks!
your videos are excellent scotty, cheers from Australia.

lol mormon here, I guess it is time to get some moonshine! Thanks for the vid!
Have a 93 civic and its spilling power steering fluid ...I think its from the rack and pinnion...do you have a video of you fixing one
Hello Scotty!
I love you channel! I have a 01 Durango. When I'm driving; I hear a squeaking that's developed on the passenger side front end. When I put my foot on the brake to slow just slightly. The squeaking stops!? And when I release to con't driving it squeaks again. [And also too mention]... at the same time when I turn steer to the right turning. I hear that gearing/low growl sound you were talking.
Hi buddy thanks for all your videos. I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 I change the power steering pump and the rack and pinion I realized that there is a noise still coming in from reservoir, inside the fluid is spinning like a swirl is not just sitting also when I put the cap on it starts leaking from the reservoir and I can't get rid of the noise I need your help
Hello Scottie quick question, I did a complete flush on my power steering system on my 2005 GMC Sierra, I replaced it with the oil from Chevy dealer per the owners manual, but now it makes the grinding noise like in your video and didn't do it before the flush. Could it still be the switch? Thanks & great videos
Just had a power steering switch leaking like crazy.... it Drained my entire fluid tank in minutes and led to smoking and bad noises like crazy.
Replaced the switch.... Filled it back up..... After driving about 20-30 mins it seems to be back to normal. Noises cleared away " Fingers crossed 🤞".
Hoping it holds and is not a pump issue.... Mine seems impossible to access - 2008 mercury milan.
But so far not leaking and holding up. Great video and info 😁👍
Mechanics must hate you scotty😂 but I love you my brother👍
Scotty you are the man!
Hey Scotty, I have a 2018 ram 2500. Every now and then I’m getting a whistle noise near the driver side of the truck. On this side of the truck is the steering gear box and power steering pump. I noticed that the whistle noise goes away when the steering wheel is turned but returns when steering is returned to straight. Thoughts. This occurs even when in park
I JUST LOVE YOUR VIDEOS..
Thanks Scotty, I actually have this exact problem in my s13 240sx right now, easy enough fix though!
Howdy Scotty,
One day I was moving too fast and put brake fluid in my power steering pump. From that point on, when I steering the wheel has been making a whining sound at certain positions. I sucked all the fluid out and put new fluid. It got better but not gone completely. It now only happens when I turn to the left when under a load (actually driving). Any ideas on what I should do?
We love Scotty!!
Dam that was like 123 done. I felt like a slap and I didn't even know who hit me.😂. I love this channel.
haha this dude is ol school. you can tell by the shades. Solid channel. Subbed.
Scotty and moonshine, now that's a good combination!😁
Ahaha Ur that coolest brother! Love that ending with the moonshine too
Hey ,scotty I love to watch your videos. I have a 07 highlander and I noticed that I have been changing the power steering fluid often and I also noticed oil leaking from the left side could it be the pump that leaking or it could be something else? I am waiting for your reply, thank scotty for the great job that you are doing .
