4K is becoming the new craze and just about all DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and even phones have the ability to shoot in 4K now. In this video we take a look at various video resolutions to understand the benefits of shooting 4K as well as the cons of shooting 4K when compared to HD or FHD. First we look at what is 4K video by understanding 4K resolutions in relation to 720p and 1080p, and then we answer the question of should you shoot in 4K by comparing 4K vs 1080p. Some of the benefits of 4K include the ability to do a 4K crop to 1080p or stabilize your footage in a 1080p timeline without any noticeable loss in quality. Other benefits of shooting 4K vs 1080p is "future-proofing" your work and being able to charge more for the higher quality video. Some cons of shooting in 4K include camera overheating and larger video files resulting in the need for larger memory cards and hard drives as well as taking a larger toll on your computer processor. In the big picture, 4K doesn't matter because story is the most important part of filmmaking. Shooting in 4K wouldn't automatically make your story good, but it can enhance a good story!

What's you're preferred resolution for filming, editing, and exporting? Let me know below!
Camber Motion 4K or 1440p
1080p upscale to 4K lol
Cool, SilentStorm 👍🏽
Justin Mitchell, I’d go for the full 8K upscale instead! 😂
Camber Motion I’ll just go 10k fuck it 😭
Greatly appreciate all the info you’re sharing. I’m still learning at a beginners level. I got started in video as a way to show my artwork process etc. 🙏🙏🙏
Glad to help! 👍
Good stuff dude! Looking forward to your editing vids in the future.
Thanks man! I'm about to start working on a new short and plan on documenting the whole thing to show a step-by-step process on how I do it.
Fantastic, easy to understand advice. Thanks so much for this.
You’re welcome! 👍
Great Stuff 👍
Thanks!
awesome informational video
Thanks so much, bruv! 👍🏼
Thanks, good video
No problem! 👍
Thank you
You’re welcome. 👍
Thankyou !

1 BIG LIKE FOR YOU SIR :)
Thanks, Mystical Motion. Glad to help! 👍🏽
it was helpful
Awesome!
I film everything in 4k now, even though most of the time the final product is still 1080p because of those same reasons you mentioned. I did one entire video in 4k and the editing was brutal. I have a massive PC (64 gigs ram - 20tb hd, and 2 video cards) and with CGI and stuff, the rendering and editing was crazy slow.
Peredy Izhere, I feel your pain! I just recently shot a wedding all in 4K (aside from the slow motion parts) and it was painful rendering it all even when exporting HD...
@@CamberFilmSchool Yeah man I'm starting to wonder if thats just the nature of how 4k will have to be for now. It was brutal. I ended up dropping to 1080 in the long run. I did one I kept at 4k and even the most basic color correction, camera shake, etc was extremely slow (music videos)
Peredy Izhere, for sure! I do mostly 1080 but if I start doing more 4K I may start experimenting with editing proxy files to make the editing process quicker.
@@CamberFilmSchool I recently edited my 4K music video in proxy first and switched back to 4k when rendering... It made a huge difference in the editing process. My computer didn't slow down at all.
The Video Plug, sweet! 👍🏽 It’s super helpful doing it that way.
4K 60 or 30. All day or 1080 120 or 240 for slo mo. Very informational channel. Thanks and keep it up
Thanks, Jaron! 👍🏽
This video was super helpful, thanks man! So, let's say we have two clips, each filmed in 4k and 1080p, both have the exact same framing and camera movement. If we didn't need to zoom in or stabilize in post, would there be any benefit to filming it in 4k in the first place?
You're still going to have a better quality video if filmed in 4K and downsampled to 1080p.
Good info 👍
Khanto moni speaking, thanks! 👍🏽
If the video is in FHD 1080p then which frame rate shall I choose? 25/30/48/50 etc?
Depends on what type of video you want. For normal video, I'd go with 24 fps. For slow motion I would use 60 or higher and slow it down to 24 fps in post.
@@CamberFilmSchool Thank you so much...
You're welcome! 👍🏽
I shoot everything in 16k HDR 400 Mbs, cause you know, gotta future proof my stuff. But honestly I'd shoot in 8k if the cameras were affordable. I'm hoping for 6k in the gh6 but we'll see. Btw, I shoot primarily 4k 60p with the GH5 and have never had an overheating issue and I've shot for over an hour with it, but I know that the canons and Sony's have that issue.
Dave Murphy, yea, overheating seems to be hit and miss. I’ve never had any overheating with my a7Sii even though it’s the one with known problems, but I have had my 5Dm3 overheat at 1080p after about an hour and a half before.
Do you have a video on how lighting affects filming.
I'm starting to do more videos on lighting. Just search the channel. I have some behind this scenes playlists too where I talk about lighting setups.
My phone is Xperia XA1 display HD (1280x720 px) and I record with my digital camera 4K Sony HX60V. When I playback on my Xperia XA1 no problems
Cool!
So resolution is having more pixels for the same image size or is the image size that increases?
No, the image is bigger because there are more pixels.
Do I set my sequence to 1080p when I shoot 4k or should I make it 4k sequence and render 1080p?
Kingpin Pictures, I set my timeline to 1080p and lay my 4K clips into that. Makes editing quicker for me rather than editing everything in a 4K timeline and exporting 1080p.
I have a cheap camera (zoom q2n 4k) which can shoot in 4k@30 but i dont know if its really a 4k and i worry that tje footage might disappoint me or even look grainy in the end.
Graininess is going to be caused mostly by the sensor size and how much light is available. An iPhone can shoot 4K just like my Sony FX3. But the sensor on my camera is WAY bigger than the iPhone and makes the 4K footage look way clearer and crisp
@@CamberFilmSchool ohhhhh wow😂 that actually makes sense
@@CamberFilmSchool thank you so much, i guess i will stick to 1080 because i cant buy a new lens and the one on the camera is not big.
No, it's not the lens, i'm talking about the actual sensor size of the camera. I have another video talking about sensors that'll help you understand better. Just search "Camera sensor" on my channel.
@@CamberFilmSchool ohhh alright thank you so much
Crap I need that future video 😂
😂
Alaska ?
Yep!
Why is there no 2K movie copy?
Dunno, I didn't talk about it cause most cameras go straight from FHD to UHD.
What about 8k?
8K is still just more pixels within the same aspect ratio that is typically 16:9 which equates to 7,680 x 4,320
480p is my shit
😂 🤣 Nice! 📺
720p
👍🏾
this explanation isn't thorough
Ok. What’s misleading about it?
@@CamberFilmSchool
4k is not strictly a video resolution no matter the context
it's not the size of a picture , i'd say that you meant the overall number of pixels holding details in a specific width or height measured in inches, and that used that term interchangeably with size but afterwards you gave an example resembling a relation between number of pixels and and occupied space
the rest of the video is just great i'm really sorry for my previous feedback
Ok 👍🏾
