Apple’s Industrial Design team has long been admired for their incredible work in a variety of product categories. In fact, their exceptional talent has earned them the title of the most awarded design studio in the world. And nearly every Apple fan knows the face of their design team; Jonathan Ive. He's been with the company since September of 1992, and deserves credit for some of their most iconic product designs. But after 27 years of working exclusively for Apple, Jonathan Ive has decided to leave the company at the end of the year and create his own independent design firm called LoveFrom. This move has left everyone in the tech community speculating as to why he left Apple and what his decision means for the future of the company’s design team.

People hit the wall with creativity all the time and a change up is needed to keep creativity flowing. Ives knew that in the Apple sphere his creativity was hitting a wall but at the same time his creativity outside the sphere was still there, He is moving on to pursue other creative endeavors and opening the door for Apple to bring in new creative minds before they hit the wall of walls and loose their market edge,

Ive did some good work from 1992 to until the mid 2000's. The last decade he either lost interest, common sense, or control. Being "thin" should not trump functionality. And yet that is exactly the road Ive/Apple has taken. And a result we lost headphone jacks, had the butterfly keyboard foisted on us, lost MagSafe, and prematurely went to all USC-C connectors on laptops. It was time for him to go.

      1. Steadily increasing prices for less and less hardware.
      2. Privacy breach and spying on users through their mics to ”improve siri”, regardless of your privacy settings.
      3. $999 stand.
      4. Almost yearly worse internal macbook designs with the crappiest thermals I’ve ever seen in a laptop, causing bottlenecking in addition to the slew of other design flaws that lead to board failures etc.
      5. Soldered RAM and SSDs. Do I even need to go on?
Apple hasn’t innovated since the release of the first ipad. It’s just been the same old since then with minor upgrades every year. And sometimes, they’re not even upgrades.

@@YaroLord They still make up more than 50% of the US smartphone market share. They've never been ahead of the trends, but they've always innovated the trends. They weren't the first to release a smartwatch, but they were the first to release a smartwatch that made sense to consumers. They weren't the first to release wireless earbuds, but they were the first to release automatic pairing gesture-controlled fully wireless earbuds, that also looked unique when compared to the competition. They weren't the first to release a smartphone, but they still lead the smartphone market and have for over a decade. I think people don't realize that Apple has never been about designing the newest tech, they have been about innovating an underappreciated market and showing consumers that a new piece of technology is more than just a tacky gimmick.

This comment smells of internal bias. Johnny Ives, alongside of Steve Jobs, literally saved the company and changed the world. Not to mention that he thought just like Steve Jobs in the sense that product. Perfection is only one part appearance, and that functionality played a bigger role in the quality of the product. What you’re talking about sounds more like something that would come from Steve Jobs. In case you missed the infamous video where Steve speaks to an audience and gets heckled by an audience member about Java. He goes on to explain that apple prefers to build products based on what people need, not what they think they want. He was a visionary that sought into the future. Basically, he knew that there were technologies that wouldn’t last. I don’t disagree that that can be frustrating as a user, but it certainly was unlikely to be Johny we can blame for that.

No one here appears to refer to the negative feedback to some of Ive's last product designs for Apple - i.e., the MacBook fiasco. I can't imagine, particularly for a creative person, that such a reception and backlash doesn't influence your decisions. Personally, I think this might be a good thing for Apple: key creative people should never stick around for too long, and there were other signs Ive's interests were going elsewhere.

Look objectively. An iMac in 2019 looks exactly the same as an iMac in 2009. An iPad and an iPad Mini in 2019 look exactly the way they looked in 2013. iPhones from 5 to 8 looks almost like clones, with slight difference only in size. So, maybe it is actually true that Jony Ive was not allowed to be overly creative about product design?

This strangely echos Ian Callum leaving Jaguar as design boss after 20 years to go start his own design firm, but will continue to work with Jaguar as a design consultant. It’s probably a normal transition for top designers to follow in order to stay creative and interested in their work.

"There's lots of ways to be as a person. People express their deep appreciation in different ways. But one of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity, is to make something wonderful and put it out there. And you never meet the people, you never shake their hands, you never hear their story, or tell yours. But somehow, in the act of making something with a great deal of care and love, something is transmitted there. And it's a way of expressing, to the rest of our species, our deep appreciation." --- Steve Jobs and Jony Ive

then ios 7 took a shit on everything... thank god they've tweaked it and after all these years it's more or less a good looking OS

I would add that Apple's design aesthetic has changed very little in the past 10 years. iMacs, iPads, iPhones are locked into a predictable mix of aluminum and glass. Maybe buttons change, corners are more rounded, size differences, but we all know roughly what the next generation of each will probably look like. Compare that to the previous 10+ years of Apple and the wild designs of the iMac. I imagine Jony feels like he's done about all he can do. The Mac Pro was probably his last big project, since the previous trashcan design was so disliked, but what did it change to? They went back to the aluminum tower design. I think Apple is locked into this obviously very successful aesthetic and Jony's ready for a change.

Cheap? Trust me, I had one of those Power Macintosh models shown in the video, and they were anything but cheap. It cost about 4000 dollars for the whole setup, including a color printer that was cutting edge at the time. The closest thing to cheap mass market Apple was the first iMac.
