He got lucky that the cable broke after it got tangled up. He should have shifted into neutral or tried to turn it off.
@@toolbaggers he definitely panicked and so did Matt. Either way they did a good job redirecting it. They were ready to climb that mountain and I don’t think anything was gonna stop that beast of a truck.
@@toolbaggers They also had to avoid killing the crew in the bronco directly in front of them, turning towards the wall was definitely the right decision. Fumbling for the transmission or key would have wasted time in a vehicle James was not familiar with.
@@cristopherflores6195man Matt stayed calm considering they were about to climb and flip on that little mountain they were headed for. You could see matt keeping his eyes on what was going on, what broke, where they were going, all at the same time and reacted instantly. Matt saved them big time there
The Ascender has to be my favorite one they broke, because it was such a scam. All the creator did was build a plywood/fiberglass shell and slapped solar panels on it, then threw it on a basic truck with homemade fenders, didn't upgrade it properly for even basic offroading. It isn't worth the million dollars he wants for it at all.
The way it broke, it looked almost like something they would make on Top Gear.

Its absolutely worthless. Thing was an underpowered piece of shit that could barely go up hill, wants to constantly tip over and breaks the first time you actually try to use it. Massive scam .
The best was his response of "we didn't think anyone would actually try to offroad it like that."

This video just shows the downsides of video deadlines. It throws build quality out the window when they gotta get a video out on time. Still great videos but obviously some of these could have been avoided. And yes i know some of those cars were actual accidents i just mean most of the high low cars
Some would also say it makes it interesting, funny and you can learn from it. If you don't make mistakes you can't learn
These are just things that happen to cars. Cars break, especially in cali heat on race tracks.
@orange.juice. Yes, I agree. But some these problems happened because of production deadlines and choice of the quick and easy fix instead of actual parts. I do agree some of these cars actually just broke.

I like how most of them say "yeah it's probably an hour, a day, not so much of a headache" But they proceeds to procrastinate on fixing them 😂. That's the most car guy thing ever.
TBF those fixes might be small and simple. But they have a bunch of shows to make. So I assume they just don't have that kind of time.
The clip with the Wrecker is my favorite. That thing has a gigantic V8, weighs 12,000lbs, and went full throttle uncontrolled in a confined space with people nearby and a vehicle in front. It's absolutely the save of the year. I'd have soiled myself at the wheel of that thing, you guys were intensely cool about how bad that could've been.
He's freaking out and hard to think but just turn the key off. He got lucky
@@horatiohuffnagel7978 I'm willing to bet that in someone else's custom semi wrecker you might not be familiar enough to find the key or even the gearshift in an emergency. I know I'd have been keeping my eyes on avoiding the people in front. That was so close, lol.
12:30 ish, when Matt's wrecker broke, Matt took that so well, but also his reaction to it breaking and taking off was perfect. He stayed calm, you could see him looking at, well, everything going on, and acted on it instantly.
That could have went soooooo much worse but Matt saved it perfectly. Gotta give the guy credit. Matt Wetzel is a very smart man

No build is ever perfect, it just takes the right person to break it
When they built Matt said they prepared for that with a different throttle cable route but when it came back from another shop it was like that.

It makes sense considering the size of the crew they needed to bring out to get that rig. Extra parts, welders, multiple vehicles... and you're paying for the expertise to actually be successful.
I don't know how much say James has in the video scripts, but I'm sure he had to push pretty hard to not bring up that time he screwed the HIGH Subaru so bad they needed a new car, cause he ran it off the track! Lmao

I hope we get to see a hi-low mini truck build. I'm talking about turning an older compact pickup truck into a custom low riding, cool, and radical mini truck. Bonus points if it can be turned into an old school style one from the late 80s/early 90s. Doesn't have to use NOS parts from back then, but like a tribute type build.

People always ask Matt how much he charges for a recovery. Now we know.....$10,000!!! I know that was "out of state", but DAMN!!
its like a 14 hour day to bring 2 vehicles and 4 people out. Its 5 hours to just drive from the shop to the broken vehicle. It seems like a very reasonable charge.

There was one of those 27 North Campers broken at our local Ford Dealer. Transmission blew out running down the interstate.

Custom fit, not even custom printed, racing suits are really expensive. I'd take one any day if the company paid for it.

I'd be SO curious to see Low WRX's transmission get replaced with another 5-speed PLUS some Moore Blast Plates. They're *supposed* to prevent case flex and therefore gear blowouts, and cheaper than a 6sp.

The only 5 cilinder car we got in Brazil afair is the Fiat Marea Turbo, which was notorious for being a great sounding car and for blowing up engines if you push it hard enough...

my pain, needing to shim the pivot ball in my 98 eclipse gst... rated 100 pain since i had to pull the motor on a fresh build due to no clutch actuation....twice since the first shim was not enough

On the 5 cylinder issue. If you need another one, the Volvo v50, previous gen GMC canyon/Chevy Colorado, and the Hummer H3. And the Volvo comes natural or turbo with awd
