Fitting A Nextbase Dashcam And Hardwiring It To Operate When The Ignition Is Switched On

  • Hello everyone, welcome back to the Shed and welcome to another video involving the venerable little R50 Mini Cooper.
What I am going to be doing is fitting a Nextbase Dashcam into the vehicles windscreen but I want it to be able to turn on whenever the ignition is switched on. If it didn't then it could mean that it needs to be manually turned on and we all know that is not something that most people could be bothered to do!
The process is pretty straightforward if not a little fiddly but is easily achievable by anyone at home on the driveway.
Just for interest, Halfords (A UK motorfactors store) will charge you £35 GBP just in labour alone to fit these devices for you, and that doesn't include the cost of the hardwire kit either for which Halfords would charge an additional £20, so you'd be looking at an additional £55 on top of the cost of the camera if you were to get them to do it for you!
The hardwire kit that I used, as I said in the video is not a genuine Nextbase one but a clone product that is available on eBay for only £7.54 which is a 3rd of the cost of the genuine Nextbase item and works just as well!

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to share. There is, however, a right way and wrong way round to mount the piggy back, and it needs to be right way round so that both fuses protect both consumers. If it's the wrong way round, it's possible to keep power going to a consumer when the fuse is blown.

Congrats, this actually showed how everything was fitted without assuming prior knowledge as some other tutorials do. Many thanks, you have a new subscriber.

I am not electrical knowledgeable, but I think it would be better to identify the hot side of the 5amp fuse holder so that the dashcam draws current from the hot supply directly when ignition is switched on. This way power to your dashcam does not go through as well as sharing power with the 5 amp target. I presume you have already checked that but not on video.

Just a warning. The camera turning off like that usually means the battery is done and needs replaced as it turning off like that will usually corrupt that recording

Why does the thumbnail on this video look like you’ve been ripped off, having just bought a dodgy webcam from Wish, and are in a Daily Mail article about it? 😂
