    15:51 - Verdict on the Nextbase 622GW dash cam
    A few weeks ago, someone hit my van and I thought, if this was to happen again it’d be really nice to have some evidence, maybe I should look into dashcams!
    After doing some research, I reached out to Nextbase, a leader in the dash cam market, and they kindly sent me their 622GW dash cam with a couple of awesome extras to try out.
    The 622GW is a 4k dash cam, jam packed with useful, practical features that I can’t wait to share with you, but first, let’s quickly go through the dashcam, what you get in the box and what I’ll be featuring in this video!
    It has a large ultra wide 140 degree lens with an aperture of f/1.3 and a built-in polarising filter. It utilises an Ambarella H22 chipset and an Omnivision 8MP sensor, providing 4k footage. On the back is a nice big 3 inch touchscreen. The red button below is the protect button which, when pressed, immediately protects the current file so it can’t be lost. On the side is the rear camera input.
    Then, there’s the magnetic Click & Go windscreen mount which has power input and a removable base with a 3M sticky pad on the bottom.
    The supplied cables are a short USB A to MINI-B cable for charging the camera prior to use and a 4m long 12v to USB MINI-B cable which powers the dash cam from the vehicle whilst it’s running.
    In addition to the main 622GW dashcam, Nextbase also provided 2 rear facing cameras to try out.
    The first is this nifty cabin view camera. Simply plug it into the port on the side of the dashcam and you can film all the goings on in the cab as you drive.
    The next option, and the one which suits my own needs perfectly, is the wired rear view camera - ideal for protecting the end of the vehicle you don’t often look at. It’s a small, unobtrusive camera with a 140° ultra-wide viewing angle that films in full HD and features a really practical magnetic mount onto its base which again utilises a 3M sticky pad and swivels to nearly any angle; perfect for all kinds of car set-ups. It comes with a 6 metre cable for connecting the front dash cam with the back of the vehicle.
    Nextbase also have a third innovative rear camera option - a rear view camera. Almost identical to the wide angle cabin camera, this instead has a 30° telephoto lens which views directly from the cab out of the back window. A perfectly simple solution for anyone wanting to avoid hiding all the wires that come with dash cams!
    Video resolution options for the Nextbase 622GW are are 4k@30fps, 2k@60fps, 2k@30fps, 1080p@120fps, 1080p@60fps or 1080p@30fps.
    Other features of the dash cam include: the ability to create dual files, create time lapses, shoot slow motion footage (120fps), an extreme weather mode, a parking mode thaht detexcts movement and automatically starts the dash cam recording, built-in What3Words, an Emergency SOS mode, Amazon's Alexa built-in, using the rear camera as a reversing camera and a Nextbase Apple and Android app which includes cloud storage.

    I bought the 622gw over a year ago. The app was great, the footage was very clear, however, the one time that I needed it, after someone rear ended me, there was no footage at all. I checked every video before and after the accident and there was an hour span with nothing recorded. Complete waste of money!

    Great video, just got the 622gw as a birthday present, currently have the 322gw/ball rear view camera so looking forward to the higher clearer resolution and Alexa, added features. The extreme weather feature looks good and I wouldn’t have known about the lens turning to eliminate glare,fantastic.

    Solid review. One important area of cams is legibility however. Would've been nice to see some street signs at varying distances and light levels (as I see you had license plates blurred).
    I've had the little sibling, the 322, for a few years now and can attest to the overall quality of Nextbase cams.

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It's a built-in battery, which isn't a huge capacity but enough to tart the dash cam in the event of an accident when the vehicle's not turned on. It needs to be plugged in to a power source at all times.

    You did not answer my most important question: is the resolution good enough for license plates? That is an excellent measure. You show a road and hedges, you explain all of the camera resolution settings, but you include no traffic results. I want to know if in an accident, I will be able to know the license plate(s). For that rear camera, what can it show if it is pointing straight behind? Some lens are so wide that I cannot tell the make or model of a vehicle that is more than 3 vehicle lengths behind me.

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames  Před rokem +1

      Hi, it's difficult to describe the quality or clarity of a camera in a comment, so I've made a Short about it here: czcams.com/users/shortsVA2kmvox4uQ. There are lots of factors that affect how well the camera will record a number plate; windscreen condition, weather conditions, how clean a person's number plate is, how wide the camera lens is, how far away the vehicle is. Also, bear in mind that CZcams compresses video quality and in order to edit this together I've put it through editing software and exported it, so it definitely isn't as good as when it's directly off the camera. Have a watch and I hope it helps - if you're looking to buy a Nextbase dash cam and would like to support my channel then I have an affiliate link to the Nextbase website here: tidd.ly/3CrplfU. resolution good enough??? Its 4K so it is quite good enough (on paper) for the front camera. sounds like you are asking about rear camera which is only 1080 and those camera are the same one as the one you can use in 322 so you are only relying on the image processing ability of the 622. From my experience front 4K can read the car in front plate quite good for the max of 3 car length (may be 2) in a day light in general but good luck for night time or low light. If not in front directly, the its a hit and miss

      Generally dash cams only record in 1-3 mins chunks so that old footage can easily be over-written and so that if a file got corrupted then only a few minutes would be lost instead on hours of footage. With this system you don't have to worry about running out of memory clearing the SD card. More details here: czcams.com/video/YYoBNWeR7g8/video.html

      From my experience front 4K can read the car in front plate quite good for the max of 3 car length (may be 2) in a day light in general but good luck for night time or low light. If not in front directly, then its a hit and miss

    Why dont they just have the camera battery powered which you can charge by just plugging a wire into it from the cigarette port as needed?

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames  Před rokem

      That's an interesting thought. I guess because filming takes up so much power the battery would need to be big which would affect the size and practicality of the dash cam. Or maybe they've missed a trick and there's a million pound idea there 🤔

    two things turn me off almost immediately: 1) it's 2024 and the micro USB port is till alive on this cam; 2) with its relatively gigantic size vs other smaller products, why microSD slot? SD card would enable more options for the user.

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi, both cameras start recording as soon as the engine starts so no need to turn either in. If you hit the red button, it will lock that recording from both front and back camera so it can't be deleted.

      Can I only get 4k resolution in front camera or will get 4k in both front and rear camera at same time. Or is it 2k in rear camera.. is yours hot wired too your fuse box for pernament power supply if so does it use much power and possibly drain your car batteries if used for both front and rear cameras together for parking mode. How much volts please does it use from car battery over 24 hours . Thanks Paul

      Hi, the front camera is up to 4k but the rear camera is set at 1080. I've got mine plugged into the 12v port inside the van so am not sure about volts etc. I would think it's unlikely to drain the battery though, as it would only take a small amount of power. Cheers, James

    Yes, we buy dash cameras to protect our property. If someone at nighttime hits and runs your car, we need to see the license plate. I understand, for privacy, you blurred the plates of approaching vehicles but at 10:30 on the left is a road sign about 10 meters away, and... you cannot read it!!! Useless camera though

    Only had the unit 1 week and not impressed at all. Unit overheats, battery lasts 7-8 minutes when connected to phone WiFi. USB connector is one of the ancient USB mini types, doesn't speak well for the tech used. Nextbase WhatsApp support, that contacted me to ensure everything was okay, is completely unresponsive. To top it all there was an incident on the road this morning that wasn't recorded because the camera stopped recording yesterday.. utter rubbish. Completely unreliable at every level. I'm sick of these CZcams shills talking up crap products.

    What will you do with dash cam even if you see who did it if he doesn't have insurance and you can't identify him.. Police won't help you, you live in UK. They won't even be interested.. Even if someone stole your van they won't help you.. The only chance you have if you record licence plates of someone who hits you

      If you record who did it you can work with your own insurance company to establish that the accident was not your fault.
      If you have uninsured coverage, your insurance company can also cover the cost of repairs, etc.
