The IQ is Nextbase’s latest best dash cam for 2024 which brings the best tech from the smartest modern cars, so all drivers can enjoy safety and security when on the road or parked.
Thanks to Nextbase for providing the IQ for me to test for this video.
The IQ comes in 3 versions - 1k, 2k and 4k resolution and I’ve got the 2k here, as well as the optional 2k rear camera.
Unboxing the main camera, you can see that the IQ doesn’t look like any other dash cam that’s come before it. It’s got a camera module, with lenses facing outwards to the road and inwards to the passengers, and a large circular base, which is actually a speaker, with two 4g antennas and, on the reverse, a large sticky pad mount.
This dash cam doesn’t have a built-in battery and requires a constant power source, but luckily there are two ways you can power this dash cam so the majority of vehicles will be covered; an OBD-port connector and a hardwire kit.
And, if you’re wondering, yes the IQ will turn itself off if it detects the battery voltage getting too low, with Nextbase saying “it is expected that a vehicle can be left for approximately 6 days before the voltage drops too low” for the IQ to stay on.
The protruding lens is the outward facing lens that records the road in front of the vehicle, and it films with a 140 degree viewing angle. The flatter lens is the inward-facing cabin camera which has a 180 degree filming angle and the added bonus of infrared Both of these lenses record at 2k resolution.
One thing you may have noticed about the IQ is that there isn’t much in the way of a screen, like you might be used to with other dash cams. And that’s because you can view all of your footage, whether live or recorded, on the Nextbase IQ app, as well as changing the dash cam’s settings
plus it will send you notifications about the status of your vehicle.
The optional rear camera is quite a bit smaller than the front camera and there is only one resolution it comes in - 2k - and like the road-view lens, it has a 140 filming angle.
So what makes the IQ stand apart from other dash cams and competitors? In a word, technology. Nextbase reckon the IQ is the world's first truly Smart Dash Cam, as it's packed with lots of safety features and technology.
Features the IQ has to offer include: Smart Sense Parking, Emergency SOS, Remote alarm, voice control, Live View on a mobile, witness mode, Roadwatch AI and Guardian mode.
Check out the video to compare iQ footage video quality with the Nextbase 662GW dash cam. Also, be sure to update the Nextbase iQ firmware as soon as you get the dash cam, as it will sort out a number of bugs.

    Hi James,your video was really helpful and I have now made covers for all my van windows.The best tip was using smaller pieces of paper to make the template as even a slight wind made it difficult.I found it easier to work from the outside windows for all covers

    It’s too big for my windshield. The rear cam is questionable at most times. Subscrtion is stupid, but you’re basically paying for 4g service and is nice to have. If it wasn’t so big, I’d keep it, but it’s on eBay

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames Pƙed 3 dny

      That's fair enough, it is a bit bigger than other dash cams. I've heard that they've fixed the rear cam issues in the latest firmware update - mine didn't always connect but is working perfectly now.

  • @jeffreyhemingway9578
    @jeffreyhemingway9578 Pƙed 5 dny

    Why on earth do we need to install yet another OBD cable why can we not use the cable from the 622gw camera. The cable and plug for this is MASSIVE!

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames Pƙed 3 dny

      I don't know why they've done this, one to ask Nextbase about! My 622GW used a USB or 12v port so it's nice to have OBD option to free up a port, and you really don't see the cable or plug when it's in use as the majority of it is hidden.

  • @MiniMattTV

    Do you think this could be done with removable legs? Maybe a bracket they slid into? I have little storage room, so it needs to be as flat as possible when not in use ( most of the year)

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames Pƙed 3 dny

      I don't see why not, just worth making sure it's secure when driving. The bracket sounds like a good idea!

    Thanks for sharing. How's the navy blue twill tape holding up to the UV rays? Faded much? Consider reflective on one side and black on the other so you can use either side depending on the situation.

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames Pƙed 3 dny

      The twill tape has been fine, not really faded much though I suppose that depends on the quality. That's a good idea for stealth

    Thanks so much for the breakdown. I'm just at the beginning of my van-built adventure, having purchased a Nissan e-NV200 earlier this month. It's always encouraging to see others who have committed more time and less cash to builds, and I think it really shows in the overall design of the conversion. I have a budget of ÂŁ2,200 but that includes adding in a sink, electrics and paying someone to install my skylight window (thank you for helping me to decide whether that was a necessary expense đŸ€Ł).

    This product overview could have been done by anyone to be fair ... I was hoping for a practical review from the perspective of someone who owned a micro-camper/NV200 ... Like how it works in practise, where do you place it in your setup, how you managed to charge it during a trip, what devices you could run on it (electric induction hobs etc) ... Maybe for a follow up video ?

    • @LensOfJames
      @LensOfJames Pƙed 16 dny

      I hear what you're saying, but every van conversion is completely different and, as such, so are the appliances. No follow up video planned, so to answer your questions: it goes on the floor and I move it if it's in the way (it's a tiny camper after all), I charge it with the solar panel featured in the video (or obviously mains if available) and you can pretty much run any items that don't exceed 1800w, though the length of time depends on individual usage.

    Hi James, thanks a lot for these great videos ! We just bought a nv200 looking to convert now and this really helps a lot! Another enthusiast posted a question a few years ago which we are also worried about having had mould behind rear door panel of the sliding door, I’ve copied it here below. Would be great if you can give us an update or reply on this. And another question is what type of wood would you recommend for the roof, bed and sides (panels)? Thanks very much in advance !! Hi James, thanks for this great set of videos. You mentioned when looking inside rear door panel that it looks like moisture & dirt have been getting in through door handle & Nissan installed a drain hole, so you sealed it. Are you concerned that the door handle is still letting in moisture but it has no escape now? Or perhaps you were able to seal at the door handle? Thanks for any follow up info you may have.

      Hi, no I'm not concerned and it's been about 4 years since I sealed the handle up and I haven't seen any signs that I should worry about. The drain holes are there for a reason, but the only way to insulate the doors without the insulation getting soaked every time it rains is to seal the door handles internally.

    Sew the binding material , glueing is messy

      Good idea, though it's not too messy if you're careful

    I will give this a try. I have the 322GW and live in Texas. I figured the UK company just didn't build them with the Texas climate in mind lol, interesting to see the same problem in the UK!
