  • I haven't unboxed something in a CZcams video for years, but that all changes today as I unbox and review the Nextbase 622GW dashcam. Mine is going in an electric vehicle, a Nissan Ariya, however this camera will work in any car.
    I'll be talking about the Nextbase camera, rear window camera, Nextbase MicroSD card, soft carry case and hard wire kit.

      Hi Michael Thanks for your kind comment. I looked at a few online as I'm sure you have done too. It's difficult, especially if, like me, you've never owned one before. I'm pleased with it so far.
      I think the protected videos may be where the "parking mode" is being activated, as you can still turn that on without having it permanently on and possibly draining the battery - it uses the onboard battery instead. The installer switched that mode on. And the "dual files" option is where it saves both a highres and a lowres version at the same time. (I've now turned that off.) I've been meaning to turn What3Words on but keep forgetting to do it... 🙄
      Thanks for watching! 😊

    Same set-up that I purchased ages ago and I've only just got around to fitting it! Your video is great and gives me confidence in the dashcam. I was a bit uncertain as it kept on turning on and off whilst it was on initial charge but I think that was where it was getting a bit of vibration.
    Rear camera was a pain as I have an estate and the cable is only just long enough to run in the headlining but I needed to consider the side curtain airbag!
    Now to pair it with the app and go for a drive with it!!!
    Hopefully I'll be as happy with my purchase as you are with yours.
    Keep up the good work!

    The random clips you have saved is due to the 'G Sensor' setting, you can turn it down or off completely. I recently had the same cam installed, only complaint is for me the app is a nightmare as you mentioned. I have to unpair and pair every time I want to connect to it. I read it is best to format the SD card every 2 weeks, apparently this keeps it healthy. Final point - I recently had the car serviced and the garage unplugged the dashcam! I read quite a lot of places do this as they don't want to be recorded...only problem is I didn't notice until 3 days later ha, luckily I didn't have any accidents, so just be weary around the next time you send your car in.

      You can't turn the camera all the way around, however Nextbase offer a cabin camera that plugs in the side of the unit so you can still record the road in front but also record the cabin. I'm not sure how well it would capture someone at your car window as it's designed to film the interior. Have a look at the Nextbase website as you can see sample videos on there, that might help you decide. Thanks for watching! 😊

    So now I have watched the full video I have a couple of questions.
    1: Who did you use for the install?
    2: Can you equate recording time to usb card use?
    3: Does the camera screen glow (and potentially distract) at night?
    I'm convinced that the rear view camera will be extremely useful but locating it seems a little difficult. I'm probably going to ask the good folk at Cleevely EV to do the install on our ID.3. I am also going to have it fully hardwired for parking incidents. It will be interesting to see if it impacts in any way on either the 12v or the high voltage battery.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Před rokem +2

      Hi Michael
      1. Nextbase's own installers (who are in reality a third party, but I booked it through them)
      2. Good question. A 3 minute 4K file is around 1.2GB. Obviously, changing resolution and frame rate will change all that.
      3. I located the camera behind the wing mirror so I can't see it at all from the driver's seat (near the end of my video I show the driver's view). You can turn the screen off in settings (after a pre-determined time).
      Great idea to get the rear view camera installed by a professional EV outfit. It all sounded too scary to me, despite the fitters being trained in all things EV. I suspect they'd have more experience of the ID.3 than they did of the Ariya.
      I'll be very interested to hear how you get on!

    Very informative review. My Nextbase 622GW Dashcam should be delivered tomorrow. I would like to use the Parking Mode feature but will be connecting the dash cam by using the 12V cigarette lighter cable. The power will switch off to the dash cam when I remove the key from the ignition. My question is, is it possible to use Parking Mode if the dash cam is connected to a small portable power bank? What about you using the plug in rear view camera instead of the wired version?

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for your feedback. So pleased you enjoyed the review.
      I'm not sure about using a power bank. It's an interesting idea. I don't see why it woudn't work - it's certainly worth a try. If you do, please let me know how you get on in case anyone reads your comment and has a similar question.
      It's a good idea to use the plugin module for viewing out the rear of the car, however I placed my camera hidden behind the rear view mirror so for me that woudn't work - I'd need to reposition the dashcam to a more open location. I quite like it being out of the way - you can't see it at all from the driver's seat and even in the passenger seat you don't really notice it and forget it's there.
      I hope you get on OK with your new purchase. I've been happy with mine and I can say that as someone who spent their own money on the device and has no connection whatsoever with Nextbase.
      Thanks for watching!
      Andy

      @Gazzab6 Před 10 měsíci

      @@TheRamblyChannel will do Andy. That’s my only concern being that the internal battery isn’t going to last but I’m sure the dash cam will still work over time using the 12V cable or the hard wired method. I’ve had issues with my last two car batteries as I don’t do a lot of mileage so the battery isn’t get a good charge at least every week so I’m dubious going down the hard wire route although I could have it switched but then would eventually lose the Parking Mode feature once the internal battery of the dash cam fails. It would be interesting to know how much power drain there is on a car battery when a permanent hard wire feed is used when the dash cam is in Parking Mode. As for the rear view camera and positioning of the Dashcam, I have purchased the sucker cup so I can reposition it if required until I know the best position, then I will probably change to the sticky on GPS mount.

    Following on from your review I have just purchased the 622gw which has now been professionally fitted. I was wondering what option you decided upon for the fitting. Was it fitted of the ignition or was it fitted to the battery to get parking protection at the risk of having a flat battery. I am not sure I made the right decision in having it fitted from the ignition which was the one recommended by the fitters.

    • @TheRamblyChannel

      I had mine fitted to the ignition, same as you. I don't regret it. The internal battery will have power so that if the car is knocked and you've turned on the feature to detect this, the camera will still record. I was advised the same and I the professionals probably know what they're talking about.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Před měsícem

      Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. There’s a button you can press on the front of the device that will “lock” the file and prevent it being overwritten but as it writes a new file every 3 mins (so lots of files per journey) it’s probably better to get a large storage card and then you won’t have to worry about that. You can also connect via an app and download clips to your phone although it’s not brilliant as if the camera turns itself off then the connection to the app drops. I tend to pop the card out and put it into my computer to get at the clips. Hope that helps! 😊

      @@kindathicc1609 The camera records all the time you’re driving - you don’t have to do a thing. It’ll automatically overwrite the oldest file when the storage card is getting full, that’s why I recommend a large storage card so you can capture plenty of content. You only need to push the button if you want to “lock” the current file and prevent it being overwritten. I hope that helps.

    Maybe it is just me but I had one and tried the 4K and was absolutely unimpressed!! The videos are riddled with compression artifacts!! I sent it back. BTW, if you try a camera that attaches with a strong double sided pad and you don't like the camera for what ever reason just realize it can come off. You will need dental floss to get behind the pad and between the glass. You won't fully remove it with the floss but you will get it started peeling off. Pull slowly in the direction the floss was pulled (probably downward typically) and it should come off easily enough. Now if you just try to pull it off it will not come off. Those pads have too much of a bond for you to simply yank them off. You may need some goo gone or similar adhesive remover to get rid of any leftover glue. Just try not to drip any of that adhesive remover on your dashboard or it might damage it. That method works to remove any camera stuck to the glass with a 3M double sided pad. It helps to know that because that foam tape is legendary for being so durable and long lasting.

      It's a fair point, and will work for some people. However the view out of the back of the Ariya, while decent from the driver's point of view, isn't large enough to make this kind of camera a viable option. Also, I've positioned my front facing camera right behind the rear view mirror and from there a rear camera would see nothing. Having said that, what you suggest is a good solution for many people. 👍🏻

    Did you use a polarising lens? Theyre pretty inexpensive and make a whole difference to the video all the reflection go away and sun doesnt hit the lens as much.. I have the really old version 320xr in my husbands car and it reads number plates and captures well to be fair, we rarey drive out in the evening so im not bothered about night vision but i do also have the 422 and its really clear, does the job but i absolutely hate the rear camera that attaches to the camera itself its awful the one that is the little round ball is great because it captures a wide view and is very clear, avoid wasting money on the one that attaches to the camera unless you dont mind passengers heads bobbing up and down, or hands raised up blocking view or worse the bad quality and a limited view. Not sure why its hyped so much but its just awful.
    The only upside is i never buy a dash cam to look through the videos, catch anybody and at the end of most drives i delete the card, i just like the fact that it is a deterrent, ive had a driver try to get me to hit them repeatedly and once they noticed the dash cam they back off. Good review on the 622 i would only buy if its under £100 on sale or second hand ebay, no dash cam is worth £200 lol

      Something else that could be causing it, and I'm just guessing here, but it could be caused by the road conditions on your regular route. Having a large plastic panel randomly falling off isn't trivial IMHO 🤷

      @@TheRamblyChannel Find another way to instal the rear cam, use adhesive clips. Murphy's law will have it, some prick will rear end you, your very nice internal hatch will be fkn smashed and you'll have no cam recording of the incident. Irony mate.

    Great video,the only thing putting me off is the colour,they must do this in black.and you must have a rear camera.

      @TheRamblyChannel  Před 11 měsíci

      I've hidden mine so well behind the rear view mirror that the colour doesn't matter to me, however if it's more noticeable then the colour could be an important factor! I was disappointed not to get the rear camera. It's something I may revist at a later stage.

    Just be wary if you book an installation with Nextbase engineers (RS) as I opted and paid for installation only to find out they do not cover Somerset !!! Not ideal at all and they need to tell you this BEFORE you pay for the installation service !!

    I have just got a Next base 622 gw, had it 3 weeks and as of this min I am not impressed its poor quality for a 4k pic its not sharp and it as a bad red tint on some of the clips not all of them. I deff not buy another from Nextbase , I bough this as they say they are the best well if they are the one i got is a bad one. I think it be going back .

      Hi Martin. Sorry to hear that. Mine seems fine, however everyone's mileage may vary. It's possible you have a defective unit. The other thing worth checking (silly as this sounds) is did you take the protective film off the lens? It would be easy to miss and would make the image look terrible!

      @@TheRamblyChannel Hi there , thanks for your message,
      Yes i have took the protective film off, I have been in contact with a lady named Vivien at nextbase, and to be honisty she as not been the most helpfully ok ish i would say, i sent her the worst clips and the first thing she said is now belive this or not that nextbase changes the setting in the white blance on the 622gw to show a red Tint and as you cant get into that setting your stuck with it , second mine somtimes shows the clip ok and others this red tint is there so its got a problum. and its not a sharp as i would expect 4k to be i have a camcorder and its 4k and this nextbase is no where near as clear a good HD thats about what it is, I have a vantrue dashcam and the qulity of clip is miles in front of this 622 only thing is it has no image stabilization on it. So got this nextbase as everyone says they are the best i soon found out otherwise at a cost of £250 .

      @@martinkemp3161 If you’re not happy then definitely return for a refund and get something else. This is my first dashcam so I can’t compare with others. The footage looks clear to me, although there are 2 files saved by default - both a low res and a high res version so please make sure you’re looking at the high res version. In the app, it’ll play back the low res so my advice is to pop the SD card out and download the footage. The high res version looks great to me.

    This cameral is battery backed. The Battery is under warranty for 6 months although the device itself 12 months. Consider what happens when the battery fails as it is NOT a replaceable part. After 2 years our device is useless. Not exactly cost effective or environmentally friendly.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Před 4 měsíci

      Sorry to hear that. Under consumer laws here in the UK there would be a case to take this up with Nextbase, although it's difficult to get anywhere unless you can prove that the fault was in the product when it shipped. I agree. 2 years isn't great!

    as an EV owner I would like to know what the power consumption is like, and in an ideal world I would like to have it enabled for the park function incase some twat bumped it in a supermarket or something

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Před 11 měsíci

      It has a senstivitity setting that you can tweak so it will be enabled if you're hit while parked. Thankfully I haven't tested that yet, although the camera did come on while I was washing the car the other day. The power consumption must be minimal as it hasn't impacted the batter on my EV in any noticeable way whatsoever.
