My sister and I were big pokemon fans when we were young. We had a system that when a new game would come out, she would get one version and I would get the other (and they were so cheap back then).
That's what my little brother and I did and starting with X and Y. I got Y and he got X. It's funny since I knew the pokemon anime but never experienced Pokemon FRLG, HGSS, DPPt, & BW & B2W2. Until I modded my 3ds last year in august and downloaded all those games.
I used to watch the first season in a 12 inch tv in the 90s, was never able to afford a gameboy, only finished pokemon blue on a emulator early 2000s. Just got a broken ds light and with some soldering, will fix it to play some games.

I know I can just emulate them, BUUUUT it’s just super cool being able to see the actual physical form. So far out of the DS and GBA games, I’ve got both Black 2 and white 2 in box, black in box without the manual, cartridge only platinum, complete in box soul silver, emerald, and Saphire. I have like 2 boxes filled with Gamecube Games that right now would be worth anything from 50-150 dollars each. So I have like 5k dollars in case of an emergency. Physical Games were always a good investment, specially when they are Nintendo games, those ones can get expensive.

That, combined with the fact that Nintendo isn’t making them anymore and they’re getting older and older, means that there’s (for the most part) the same demand, but with a supply that’s decreasing more and more. I recently bought Black 2 for $130 and you bet your ass that I’m not going to sell that unless it’s an emergency. If Nintendo just released them on the Switch VC, it’d be better…
The first two generations brand new in box are still little over a hundred USD or less. Generation three to five is when the prices start to go to orbit.
Did you perhaps trade in a ton of your games to GameStop as a kid too? Sadly, I did that as well... I scurried to grab all the older games as soon as I heard the Eshop was shutting down with all my birthday money. How I got over it was thinking about how if I didn't trade in those games, I would never have played the games that I traded for. Which were games like Pokemon Omega Ruby and YoKai Watch 2.
I somehow managed to snag myself a legit copy of pokemon sapphire awhile back for $20.00 (if you know how hard it is to get legit fan games you know). The only downside was that it was a japanese copy.
Imagine what would happen if you could play the gens 1-5 thru virtual console on the switch? Heck, throw in gens 6 and 7 too. I’m sure they’d even make bank if it was a port selling through the eshop

The key is good financial planning. One game per month or two will not break the bank if you have average income and are able to set money aside. Plus, if you pace yourself, any one of these games can take over a month to complete. Also, you don't need the boxes. And be careful not to get scammed, there are many fake cartridges floating around of all generations that are being sold off as genuine.
Emulators for us! Plus, we would play on the large screen with friends and rotate the keyboard. Eat snacks as our friends would make poor pokemon decisions 😂
I am so happy i bever sold my beloved white 2 and just 1 week ago i found it and opend it and i play some hours on my game with my shiny legendaries. And when i saw the price for the game cuz i wanted platinum i was like god damn my game is almost 200 bucks and platinum is 100 wtf
It is with the box, which granted is more valuable than the game itself. At that time, the gba box was made of cardboard and people tend to throw them away when getting the game. Still, the game itself is worth about $166 (usd)
They are so expense because post B2W2 it was all down hill. So decent games in the 3ds era like USUM. But come the switch...the era of our childhood has been replaced with TikTok brain kids. Nothing can be fun and difficult anymore.

Emulating is an easy good option, but nothing beats playing on a genuine console.
But you don't need the cartridge for that if you have a 3DS! =)
