Thank you! You're the only place I've found that offers a real explanation of the differences. Even Steelcase doesn't provide much information (plus their website is a mess).
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching :)
@@CrandallOfficeFurniture agreed, I didn’t realize there was a functional difference at all. I thought it was just some made up color grouping. Thank you!!
Wonderful review! Appreciate you putting the time and effort into differentiating the two. The man in the video explained them perfectly & helped me make my decision on which fabric to go with!
We appreciate the comments, glad you found it helpful!! Thank you for watching!
This was very helpful, thank you so much for making an informative and quick video. I like that you got straight to the point and made it super clear with text on the video and nice close up shots.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching :) -DC
That was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for this great review. You really get to the point quickly. 👍🏼 Thank you. Greetings from Germany
Glad it was helpful! Greatings!
thank you! I needed this to pull the trigger and order a Steelcase. I appreciate you guys making this video!
Our pleasure!
Great overview of these two fabrics, answered the questions I had about the feel!
Thank you!
This was so helpful! Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful! :) Thank you for watching!! -DC
This is fantastic! Just purchased a chair from your site (#1392). Really appreciate all of these videos and excited to get my chair.
Awesome, thank you for your business! If it hasn't shipped already, we'll make sure it gets out ASAP! :) Hope you love your chair, and thanks for watching!!
@@CrandallOfficeFurniture Thanks, still waiting on shipment but stoked for it to arrive! Cheers.
Really helpful review! I also super appreciate your great selection of photos of all the fabrics on actual chairs on your site. I'd be very confident buying from you, but I'm really having to weigh how much I want a particular fabric color!
We appreciate the kind words! Let us know if there's anything we can do to help your decision! :)
I'm on the fence between these two. I recently owned a Gesture in Cogent:Connect malt, it was so much softer and modern compared to my Leaps 'cricket' fabric (circa 2008). It's really a beautiful fabric. I've since sold the Gesture (did not like it compared to leap) and I'm considering buying a new Leap instead. My primary question is: which one of these two fabrics is least likely to 'pill' from a cats claws? I'm guessing Era would be better since it seems to be a tightly woven fabric, vs the more open and airy knit of the Cogent:Connect, but I've never seen the fabric in person.
Unfortunately my cat has this habit of sitting along the top of my current Leap (along the 1cm wide portion!), and she digs her nails into the seat to hold herself up there... Obviously I would rather she not do this, but negotiations with her have not been successful thus far.
Way late, but for future viewers, Era is better WRT pilling, class 5 vs. Cogent:Connect's class 3.5. Also better at dry crocking (4.5 vs. 4), wet crocking (5 vs. 4), and colorfastness to light (5 vs. 4). (5 is highest, it's supposed to mean the fabric won't pill or lose color due to contact or light exposure.) So it's basically Era for durability, C:C for breathability, and Billiard Multi for softness/smoothness.
Thank you for this very informative video! My husband asked me to help him decide between these two types of fabric and I had no idea how to advise him.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the great comparison video! Which one should I choose considering that I have a cat who loves to scratch my current chair?
Between these two in that scenario, I would definitely go with Era. Cogent is a very soft fabric and I can see cats claws just going right through it. Era is a bit tougher in that regard.
I wonder if there would be any difference in durability and longevity between the two fabrics in terms of how they hold up to and show battle damage from, wild cats that like to repel from your chair.
not much of a difference really just that cogent is a tighter woven fabric so it might hold up a little better.
good informations. cogent is better then cuz of breathability. thats why u can only find cheap eras and on their website cogent is slightly more expensive as well.
Which one is easier to clean? Does cogent have nooks that trap dirt/debris easier?
The nooks on Cogent are pretty small, so that would not be a big concern to me, but I would say Era is probably slightly easier to clean overall.
i like this channel more than BTOD lol
Which one is better for working long hours at home?
Hi David! Great review and explanation!
I'm looking into a chair with breathable fabric to help with those hot summer months. How does the Guilford of Maine stack up to the Cogent?
Hi Eddie, thanks for the kind words! Good question - we will hopefully be doing some direct comparisons from our Guilford fabrics to the Steelcase fabrics in the future, but to answer your question now, Guilford of Maine's Open House fabric is a woven fabric that is more in line with something like a Steelcase Buzz2 than anything else in their lineup. It's a pretty standard woven fabric with a middle of the road breathability - the Cogent, being a knitted fabric, is more breathable than Guilford Open House. Hope this helps! :)

I'm harsh on my chairs and sometime sit with my feet in them. Which is more durable?
Both have the same durability rating of 100,000 double rubs, so they should theoretically stand up to that kind of abuse equally well. That said, I think the softness of the Cogent fabric would be more likely to catch on something on a shoe or foot and potentially cause an issue there - I'd probably vote Era for that reason.
which fabric traps in heat more?
The era as it is less breathable.
BA is correct.
Which fabric is more likely to get snagged?
Cogent Connect for sure! It has more give and opportunity to snag.
Well hello there Mr. Crandall, I guess I know where I'm buying my Steelcase chair from.
Thank you very much!
Is 3d knit cogent the same as cogent connect
Where are you seeing a 3d knit cogent? Could you send us the link?
Do you guys provide any non-polyester fabrics?
The wool and the leather would be the only ones.
The Era fabric is very slippery which has a negative effect on sitting. I would advise against this fabric if you sit on this chair for a longer period of time
the Cogent is better?
This could also be important for people who want to sit cross legged from time to time as it could take too much effort to keep your legs tucked on a slippery fabric.
My hips would never let me sit cross legged no matter how hard I tried, so I have a Herman Miller Aeron (I also have a HAG Capisco, but it's not great for long hours). My wife however does sit cross legged from time to time which is why I'm looking into a Steelcase Gesture with Cogent:Connect for her most likely.
