Let me know if in the comments below if you think I’ve missed any important details.

For me to use it less than 10 times a year, i will rather stick to my tent for overnight trips or the camper trailer for longer periods. You have to weigh up the initial cost & the additional weights on the roof, plus as you mentioned the extra height. 🤠

The high position is great for air flow and views ....... beats a swag at HOT or Soaking WET ground level . Also is better than towing ANYDAY !

Good to see you discussing the actually Roof Load Rating not just that of the roof rack. I know the Gen 3 (mine) & Gen 4 Pajeros have a Roof Load Rating of 100kg but it is also meant to be reduced by 30% when on "Unsealed" roads. I hate RTT's personally. As you said they are ugly and I think way too heavy to be keeping on the roof of your vehicle especially if it stays on all the time. I also don't like the thought of climbing up & down that ladder of a night especially if you have had a few.

    I couldn't get past 'asteticklee'

After watching a slew of YT videos, I went with the Inspired Overland RTT to put on my 2024 Subaru Forester Wilderness. The latest 2.0 version weighs in at just under 80 lbs and is under 5 inches thick when closed.. I paid under $1k for it then got a sweet deal on the shipping.

G'Day, It looked so awkward trying to set up and pack up, I recon you would have been better off with one of those side opening RTT rather than a rear opening RTT. The side opening RTT is accessed, set up and down all from the one side, and is similar in design with canvas extensions and star gazing windows. I could no longer use swags with my back injury (arthritic) even though I like them, and find them confortable, the cold tends to pass through the PVC bucket floor and mattress and buggers my back the following day. I invested in a RTT before covid hit and it's been the best thing for me since sliced bread, with regards to my back. I enjoy camping again with better mobility, and I don't even need a lounge chair anymore to take breaks which is a big plus. It used to kill me rolling up a double swag with a bad back, but with the rear accessible RTT it takes literally a minute to set up and pack up, whilst I stand upright on a ladder, (no more bending over). Anybody who has a back injury knows what a game changer this is. I have my RTT mounted to the canopy so weight really isn't an issue as it can handle 300kg+. The weight on the roof of a vehicle is a different issue. If anybody has arthritic back issues, I would definitely recommend a good RTT and get off the ground.

Was just wondering when you mentioned weights & how it's secured, because the arb base rack is only rated at 20kg per slat with only securing at each end is it technically over the rating? Or if it actually sits on each slat is it considered spreading the load even though its not secured to each slat?

I've had rooftop tents for about 10 years, and I think they're fantastic. However, I do agree that they look like S#$t when left on 4wd around town. I just got too old to climb up and down ladders. But I think there's no going back once you've used a rooftop tent. Keep up the good work. Stev, and enjoy the cape with a rooftop tent.

  • @michaelhermans4753

I would only have one if I could easily take it of faster than it goes on, ugly but practical in certain circumstances

  • @OutbackOutlaw

Everything has a use if you use it for that use! Profound I know! Im not a fan of them either but I have looked at them for my 200. I live remote north WA, so lizards don’t really factor into my reasoning as I grew up in the bush of the NT and lizards were a part of every day life…it’s the people that I’m worried about!!

  • @Alecia-Brown

Actually have made want to actually look at one of these. Thanx

  • @tonysambar

Camping at Christmas my mate was still trying to get his rooftop tent set up, while I already had my centre pole touring tent up and had boiled the billy.

  • @ToyBJ

G’day Steve , good presentation as usual mate but after watching all of that I needed a beer !! Most 4x4’s have all the aerodynamics of a house brick and I keep anything on my rack to a necessary requirement as in a sober panel etc. I’ll stick to my swag on a cot thanks bro lol , fits perfectly under my awning too 👍🍻

  • @smokin4x45

The san hima Jarvis pro has side awnings, that would solve your heat and rain situation….

  • @Muamir23

Check out Alu cab LT50. Lighter and easier to deal with. Plus slim

  • @christhomas2349

you mentioned your tent is 60kg, but the link youve attached says 90kg? is this a typo? I also have a 100kg roof load limit and trying to work out how to fit a RTT plus my 270 awning

  • @davidmilledge221

The roof top tent Makes the Nissan look better mate 👍

  • @tonyf7997

Yep, have been ‘umming and rrring’ for 2 years and nah , tent for remote and van for other ….
